Trad Jazz in 1950S Britain—Protest, Pleasure, Politics— Interviews with Some of Those Involved
Trad jazz in 1950s Britain—protest, pleasure, politics— interviews with some of those involved George McKay These are transcriptions of interviews and correspondence undertaken as part of an Arts and Humanities Research Board (now Council)-funded project exploring the cultures and politics of traditional jazz in Britain in the 1950s. The project ran through 2001-2002 and was entitled American Pleasures, Anti- American Protest: 1950s Traditional Jazz in Britain. I edited responses, and structured them here according to the main issues I asked about and to key points that seemed to recur from different interviewees. There is a short-ish introduction to give a sense of context to readers unfamiliar with that period of Britain’s cultural history. I hugely enjoyed meeting and talking with these people, whose cultural and political autobiographies were full of energy, rebellion, fun, with music at the heart. Thank you. Some—Jeff Nuttall, George Melly—are, sadly, now dead. Material from these interviews, and a second set I undertook with modern jazzers and enthusiasts (I acknowledge that the distinction between trad and modern doesn’t always bear scrutiny) was included in my book Circular Breathing: The Cultural Politics of Jazz in Britain (Duke University Press, 2005). Do contact me if you have any queries. George McKay University of Salford, UK [email protected] April 2002; revised (with extra images) September 2002; revised introduction January 2010 (little has change except the point that I now know that the David Boulton jazz historian and the David Boulton of CND were one and the same person) Most of the archive photographs here are either from Jeff Nuttall’s photo album, which he gave me at the end of our interview in Abergavenny—I’d like to pass it on to a family member, please—or © and courtesy of the Ken Colyer Trust: www.kencolyertrust.org 1 Introduction British jazz has arrived, in Britain at any rate. -
1 Amazing Grace
1Amazing Grace BY JOHN NEWTON 1. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saves a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found; Was bound, but now I’m free. 2. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fear relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. 3. Through many dangers, toils and snares We have already come; 'Twas grace that brought us safe thus far, And grace will lead us on. 4. When we've been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we’d first begun. 5. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saves a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found; Was bound, but now I'm free. 2Just aCloser Walk With Thee TRADITIONAL 1. Just a closer walk with Thee, Grant it, Jesus, is my plea; Daily walking close with Thee, Let it be, dear Lord, let it be. 2. Through the days of toil and snares, If I falter, Lord, who cares? Who with me my burden shares? None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee. 3. When my feeble life is o'er Time for me will be no more; Guide me gently, safely on To thy shore, dear Lord, to thy shore. 4. I am weak, but Thou art strong. Jesus, keep me from all wrong. I'll be satisfied as long As I walk, let me walk close to Thee. -
Federal Overreach Summit – Meeting Transcription Page 1
Federal Overreach Summit – Meeting Transcription Page 1 – August 12 & 13, 2013 Citizens’ Advisory Commission on Federal Areas FEDERAL OVERREACH SUMMIT August 12 & 13, 2013 in Anchorage, Alaska Note: This is a verbatim transcription prepared from archived video of the Summit and was approved as written at the October 3, 4 & 5, 2013 meeting of the Commission in Anchorage. Tuesday, August 13, 2013 (Day 2) begins on page. 89 Monday, August 12, 2013 8 a.m. Welcome and Introductions Representative Keller - Welcome to the CACFA, the Federal Overreach Summit. There’s a lot of things you could be doing today. You picked one I think that is just incredibly significant to who we are as Alaskans and it should have a long-lasting value. What the basic idea is, we're here to document the problem, to look at federal overreach, but more importantly to document the concerns of the Governor, the Lt. Governor, the Congressional Delegation, and then different people in different agencies and individuals. I'm not going to go through the whole list, but people that actually have hands-on and are dealing with Federal Overreach. And we're also here to document solutions. And tomorrow afternoon we're going to have a roundtable of all the presenters and those presenters have been asked to make proposals to help us get a comprehensive list of the things that we can do. When I say document, what CACFA is doing, is we're taking this information - this is what we normally do. We deal with federal impact and federal management and we have initiated something called Stand with Alaska. -

Introduction
Notes Introduction 1 . The literature on American ‘rock ’n’ roll’ and ‘rhythm and blues’ is vast. Two books stand out in presenting detailed explorations of the origins and develop- ment of these musical genres and their impact on wider US society. For rock ’n’ roll, see G. C. Altschuler, All Shook Up: How Rock ’n’ Roll Changed America (Oxford, 2003) and for ‘rhythm and blues’, B. Ward, Just My Soul Responding: Rhythm and Blues, Black Consciousness and Race Relations (London, 1998). 2 . The emphasis on England and the English experience of popular music does not necessarily suggest that the relationship between class and youth culture was always different in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, but in some respects it clearly did differ. For examples in the literature, see S. Hill, Blerwytirhwg? The Place of Welsh Pop Music (Aldershot, 2007); M. Kielty, Big Noise: The History of Scottish Rock ’n’ Roll (Edinburgh, 2006); D. Cooper, The Musical Traditions of Northern Ireland and Its Diaspora: Community and Conflict (Aldershot, 2010). 3 . There are really only two academic books written by historians devoted to this aspect of British society. See B. Osgerby, Youth Culture in Britain Since 1945 (Oxford, 1998) and D. Fowler, Youth Culture in Modern Britain, c1920–1970 (Basingstoke, 2008). 4 . W. Straw, ‘Consumption’, in Frith, Straw and Street (eds), The Cambridge Companion to Pop and Rock , p. 55. For a critical survey of the limited histories of popular music, see S. Frith, ‘Writing the History of Popular Music’, in H. Dauncy and P. Le Guern (eds), Stereo: Comparative Perspectives on the Sociological Study of Popular Music in France and Britain (Aldershot, 2011), pp. -
