Il s’installe ensuite à Boston, où il suit, en privé, l’enseignement de Roger Sessions, Walter Piston et Nicolas Slonimsky. Il est probable qu’il ait croi- sé la route d’Arnold Schoenberg qui avait fui l’Europe en proie au nazisme. Les sympathies communistes de Nancarrow le con- vainquent de participer à la Guerre civile d’Espagne en 1937– 1938 avec la Brigade Abraham Lincoln. -

MARIJN SIMONS BIOGRAPHY The works of Dutch composer, conductor and violinist Marijn Simons (1982) have been commissioned and performed by such conductors and soloists as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Marin Alsop, Peter Eötvös, James MacMillan, Jun Märkl, Marcus Bosch, Christian Lindberg, Evelyn Glennie, Colin Currie, Liza Ferschtman, Dorothee Oberlinger and by orchestras and ensembles such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, The Hague Philharmonic, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Aachen Symphony Orchestra, Prague Chamber Orchestra, Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, Cuarteto Latinoamericano, Tambuco Percussion Ensemble and the 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic. Simons was Composer-in-Residence at the Cabrillo Festival, Delft Chamber Music Festival, Orlando Festival and the Zeitgenossen festival. His compositions have been performed at concert venues such as the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Konzerthaus Dortmund, Cologne Philharmonic Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), National Centre for the Arts (Mexico City) and the Hanoi Opera House. He has received the Philip Morris Arts Prize, Limburg Culture Award, Wim Bary Perspective Award and his composition The City of the Soul has been awarded Best Dutch Choral Composition in 2001. Recordings of his music have been released by Composers’ Voice, Etcetera, NorthWest Classics, Quintone, Amstel Records and Erasmus labels. October 2014 saw the world première of his first opera Emilia Galotti commissioned by the Koblenz Theatre. During the fall of 2021 his second opera Lachesis will receive its first performances at the Linz Theatre. Future commissions include a new string quartet and a work for the St. Michael Thorn Wind Orchestra. Simons is Founder, Conductor and Artistic Director of the Simons Ensemble. -

After organ studies in his home town, he attended classes at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels where his orchestration and composition teacher was Paul Gilson. He also took some private lessons from Florent Schmitt. In addition to composing, he had a distinguished academic career with posts at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels and at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel and as the long-time director of the Music Academy in Etterbeek that was renamed to honor him. He composed an enormous amount of music that encompasses all genres. His orchestral output is centered on his 5 Symphonies, the unrecorded ones are as follows: No. 1 in D minor, Op. 1 (1920), No. 3, Op. 57 (1943), No. 4, Op. 142 (1969) and No. 5, Op. 148 (1970). Among his other numerous orchestral works are 3 Piano Concertos, 2 Violin Concertos, Viola Concerto. "La mort de Tintagiles" and 7 Rhapsodies. After some early musical training, he studied in Paris under the tutelage of Marcel Dupré (organ), Paul Roës (piano) and Nadia Boulanger (counterpoint).
