He spent a year at the University of Edinburgh, and then a year in California on a Fulbright Scholarship teaching in the Department of Art at UCLA and studying the Stowe Papers at the Huntington Library. From 1961-64 he practised as an architect in the Edinburgh office of Sir Robert Matthew, working on the development plan for Queen’s College, Dundee, the competition for St Paul’s Choir School in London, and other projects. In 1964-65 he held a Junior Fellowship in Landscape Architecture from Harvard University at Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection in Washington, DC, returning to England to Newcastle University in 1965, where he was successively Lecturer in Architecture and Reader in the History of Architecture.

    Press release 21 October 2014 A forty year fight to save great historic country houses from decay and demolition is celebrated in SAVE’s latest publication The Destruction of the Country House: Forty Years On. This new book records the enormous impact of the V&A’s landmark exhibition in 1974 and includes illustrations of over 120 major houses lost between 1875 and 1974. The main purpose of the book is to tell the story of SAVE’s many campaigns to restore, revive and reuse endangered country houses. The plight of these houses has been illustrated in successive SAVE reports since 1978, starting with Tomorrow’s Ruins?, a catalogue of some 60 endangered houses. The front cover, and inside front cover of The Destruction of the Country House: Forty Years On, showing the staircase at Eaton Hall, Cheshire, demolished in 1961. Very soon after its foundation in1975 SAVE began to come forward with practical solutions for individual historic houses, working with entrepreneurs and architects to create solutions, including Kit Martin, who has rescued a series of major country houses, including Gunton Hall, Hazells Hall, Cullen House and Burley-on-the-Hill. Memorably in 1981 SAVE bought the derelict Barlaston Hall for £1. It was no bargain as rain was pouring through the roof, bringing down the ceilings and floors and the house was suffering from severe mining subsidence. It took a major fight with the National Coal Board to secure compensation, but SAVE carried out the structural repairs and found a purchaser willing to complete the restoration, including all the wonderful Rococo plasterwork.

The following Bibliography is a first attempt to do just that, and provides a starting point for those who want to learn more about the properties and collections in the National Trust’s care. Inevitably this list will have gaps in it. Do please let us know of additional material that you feel might be included, or where you have spotted errors in the existing entries.     Museum & Society, 11(1) 1 The V&A, The Destruction of the Country House and the Creation of ‘English Heritage’ Ruth Adams* Abstract This paper considers the role played by the V&A and the exhibition The Destruction of the Country House in the political activities and increasing prominence of the ‘heritage lobby’ in England in the 1970s. It argues that the V&A had a significant role in shaping the discourse and advancing the public awareness and political efficacy of the heritage movement, and that it assisted in reinforcing the association of, and perhaps even conflating, English heritage with the country house. The paper also reflects on changing attitudes and policy relating to heritage in England since the late twentieth century, drawing on a range of relevant critical literature and theoretical approaches. Key Words: V&A, Heritage, Country Houses, Policy, England Introduction In the autumn of 1974, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (V&A) staged an exhibition called The Destruction of the Country House (hereafter called Destruction). Although not, as the Museum’s then director Roy Strong was later to claim, ‘the first time [...] that a museum exhibition was an exercise in polemic’ (1998: 139), it was a landmark show for the V&A, and a watershed in heritage politics. The exhibition promoted the idea that not only were England’s great country houses under threat, but that if these richly symbolic buildings were lost, so too would be important aspects of English national history, culture and identity. This conflation and the exhibition as a whole are important for an understanding of the recent history of heritage in the UK because the V&A, its policies and personnel, played a key role in shaping the discourse and advancing the public awareness and political efficacy of the heritage movement.

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 1 _______________________________________________________________ _______ 2 Abstract Despite a growing body of literature and practical examples of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ) interventions in museums, there is a dearth of research in equivalent initiatives in historic houses, specifically in those owned and managed by the National Trust. My research aims to address that gap, by using a creative intervention in the form of an exhibition for LGBT History Month. This queered action research involved curating an intervention, using a crowd-sourced exhibition, at the National Trust’s Sutton House in Hackney, London. The exhibition and the process of curation is the primary case study in my thesis. The exhibition 126, saw 126 LGBTQ identified volunteers submitting smartphone recordings of Shakespeare’s Fair Youth Sonnets and short video portraits of themselves as contributors. These were edited into a film, and exhibited at the first ever ‘Queer Season’ at Sutton House in February and March 2015. While feedback from visitors and contributors was analysed, the video portraits formed the primary data in the thesis. The videos are presented as a means through which LGBTQ people have chosen to represent their queer identities in a National Trust property. The results are noteworthy for the diversity of ways that LGBTQ people choose to visually signify their queer identities when given autonomy to do so.

I met his wife, Rosemary Hill, at the flat. She had the thankless task of sorting out the slide collection which was to be given to Historic England’s National Monuments Record and, on the day I arrived for a first look, was busy doing that with huge dedication. Whilst she sorted and packed, I scanned the shelves. As many well-known titles had already been removed it soon was possible to see that between the gaps that what remained was arguably the essence of the collection; I mean those smaller books and pamphlets that provide the detail on architects, designers and places that reflecting Gavin Stamp’s interest in every conceivable aspect of architecture and design. In these books were many with notes, photocopies and jottings from friends and academics which illuminate detailed queries he had about this and that and which often exploited in his own writings. Books spilled off the shelves on every imaginable building type including telephone boxes, about which he had run a campaign to encourage saving Giles Gilbert Scott’s design. There were booklets on war memorials, reflecting his enduring interest in memorialisation, on European modernism, on neo-classicism and the gothic.

To our delight it proved so popular that its stay at the museum was twice extended.
