Newsletter Issue No. 93 February 2020 In January our speaker was Chris Vaspar who came to tell us of his experiences of the Marathon des Sables, a gruelling six-day ultra-marathon in the Moroccan Sahara desert in six stages, said to be the toughest foot race in the world. Runners have to be self-sufficient, carrying with them all food and equipment for one week. Water is rationed at 14 litres a day and if you exceed the ration, you get a time penalty. In just six days competitors run over 156 miles through endless dunes, over steep and rocky jebels, and across white-hot salt plains. Each stage must be completed in the time allowed, the fourth stage is two consecutive marathons in 35 hours. The exceptional fifth stage is 52 miles and is run all day and overnight, the final sixth stage is a mere marathon run! A camel train follows the runners with the overnight tented accommodation and if the camels catch up with you - you are out of the race! Former soldier Chris explained that he was looking for a challenge during a quiet time in his life and with a like-minded friend decided to attempt the 2016 event raising money for the forces charity Walking With The Wounded, which helps injured former British Armed Forces servicemen and women transition into civilian life. Once completed he immediately signed up for the 2018 event. Prior to this Chris had no experience of long-distance running, so extensive training was imperative, increasing his running and walking to 80-90 miles a week, gaining heat acclimatisation in a sauna (in full kit) after treadmill exercise, and especially two sessions at Loughborough University’s Ergonomic Training Facility, treadmill running at 40 degrees and 10% humidity.

  • Newsletter 2020-03
Newsletter Issue No. 94 March 2020 At the February general meeting our Guest Speaker entertainment was supplied by Steve Allen, who summoned up his alter ego Eli, born 1837 in the Black Country, to lead us through his personal view of the changes in Britain during the Industrial Revolution of the 19th Century. These were illustrated with pictures and songs, some of which the audience were invited to join in. Along the way we heard about the introduction of the factory system at water powered cotton mills in Derbyshire and how the invention of the rotative steam engine led to the industrialisation of the Midlands (cue “Dirty Old Town”). The poor living conditions and the use of child labour in the new industrial towns was touched on although this helped Britain gain 50%of the world textile trade. World trade was a reason for the importance of merchant shipping and the need for fast clippers like the Cutty Sark to quickly transport high value goods (cue “Drunken Sailor). Transport was revolutionised, firstly by the construction of the canal system and latterly by the coming of the railways, both achieved with the hard work of the hard-drinking Navvies. Eli’s discursive talk also mentioned the end of the Napoleonic wars (cue “Over the Hills”) and the Crimean war, especially the revolutionary work of Florence Nightingale (cue “Auntie Maggies Remedy”) Eli kept us all entertained with his tales and songs until we sang a last song together (“So long It’s been good to know you”) after which he handed back to Steve with enthusiastic applause from the audience.

From the United Kingdom: Shakespeare’s Globe Get the Steppenwolf Black Card 6 Credits to use however you want. 3 levels to fit any budget. steppenwolf.org/membership • 312-335-1650 —The Merry Wives of Windsor CHICAGO SHAKEPEARE THEATER Welcome DEAR FRIENDS, We’ve just launched our 30th Anniversary Season at Chicago Shakespeare and could not think of a better way to celebrate than the current scope of work on our stages and in the community. As we write, our production of Twelfth Night is touring, free for all, to nineteen Chicago neighborhoods; rehearsals have just begun for Part Two of Barbara’s epic history cycle, Tug of War; and today, our yearlong international festival—Shakespeare 400 Chicago—welcomes the incomparable Jonathan Pryce as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice from Shakespeare’s Globe. We are excited to continue our relationship with this renowed theater, where Barbara has long served on The Globe Council. The Merchant of Venice marks the third time a Globe production has toured to CST’s stages, beginning in 2003 with its “original practices” production of Twelfth Night, starring Academy Award-winner Mark Rylance as Olivia, and again in 2014 with its ambitious world-circling tour of Hamlet, presented in 197 countries. In 2014, CST’s World’s Stage series welcomed Kneehigh’s production of Tristan and Yseult directed by Emma Rice, now the Globe’s artistic director. The sole North American theater invited to participate in the 2012 Cultural Olympiad “Globe to Globe” festival, CST debuted on the Globe’s stage with its production of Othello: The Remix, created with the Q Brothers.

  • LOUISE KIRKBY LUNN [C] 3044
VOCAL 78 rpm DISCS EDWARD LLOYD [t]. London, 1845-Worthing, 1927. Lloyd was the major British concert and oratorio tenor of the last quarter of the 19th century. He began as a chorister at Westminster Abbey and was subsequently engaged for St. Andrews and then the Chapel Royal. His solo career began in 1871, singing the tenor solo in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion at the Gloucester Festival. He received much acclaim through his singing of this work, as well as in oratorios of Händel, Mendelssohn, and other com- posers, notably Elgar. He was a particular favorite of Elgar and created the tenor solos in that composer’s Caractacus (1898) and The Dream of Gerontius (the year of his farewell, 1900). While he was no longer EDWARD LLOYD, pianist Mme. Adami and unidentified cellist heard regularly on the stage, Lloyd made a recording, circa 1907 number of records for the Gramophone Company in London, 1902 to 1911. Lloyd’s American debut was at the Cincinnati May Festival in 1888. His colleague, baritone Charles Santley, described him physically as “a nice, plump little gentleman”. The New York Times gave a more thorough description on his arrival in 1888. He “looks and acts about as much like a good-natured New York business man as anybody else. He is of medium height, stocky in build, and rather florid of face. He has pleasant dark eyes and dark hair that is just tinged with gray and is brushed down very smooth. A neat mustache is the only hair he wears on his face.

EDGAR MITTELHOLZER (1909-1965) AND THE SHAPING OF HIS NOVELS by JUANITA ANNE WESTMAAS A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Centre of West African Studies School of Historical Studies University of Birmingham June 2013 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. The intellectual property rights of the author or third parties in respect of this work are as defined by The Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 or as modified by any successor legislation. Any use made of information contained in this thesis/dissertation must be in accordance with that legislation and must be properly acknowledged. Further distribution or reproduction in any format is prohibited without the permission of the copyright holder. ABSTRACT This thesis is a response to the critics of the pioneering novelist Edgar Mittelholzer whose second novel was instrumental in paving the way for other Caribbean novelists during the 1950s. Critics of Mittelholzer have accused him of fascism, racism, an unhealthy interest in sexually sensationalist topics and death. He has until the recent centenary of his birth been marginalised and understudied. The first chapter of this thesis outlines the areas of study that have thus far been focused on and explores the underlying methods and theoretical framework of this thesis. The second chapter focuses on the author’s background, career and contribution to the Caribbean. The third explores the genesis of Mittelholzer’s creativity with a view to revealing how intertextuality is key to an understanding of his novels.

HIS GLORY GOES WITH US I was hooked from the second paragraph on the first page. I am thoroughly persuaded and reminded by the hard truths it contains, to never settle for anything less than the ‘old rugged cross gospel’ Pearl Kupe, Lawyer, International Consultant, South Africa A glossary of fearless faith in action whilst holding a mirror to me. Once you open the pages; the immediacy of the message could not allow me to put it down.
