Li & Thomson 1976, Lim 1972, Shin 1975). Drawing on Halliday’s systemic functional linguistic (SFL) theory, Kim (2007) shows that there are different ways of orientating the reader in terms of how a text unfolds in Korean and argues that un/nun certainly plays a major role in that regard but it is not the only resource in realizing Theme in Korean. Based on the corpus evidence, this paper suggests a model for a system of THEME in Korean and describes the choices of Theme in the language that is yet to be studied comprehensively from a SFL perspective. 1 Introduction It seems to be widely accepted that un/nun is the Theme or topic marker in Korean (cf. Li & Thomson 1976, Lim 1972, Shin 1975). That is, what the clause is going to be about is indicated by the element marked by the postposition un/nun. This proposition is useful in understanding one aspect of the postposition un/nun but it is certainly limited in explaining how Theme is realized in Korean simply because there are other elements that appear to function as Theme based on evidence from discourse but are not marked by un/nun. The present paper investigates these other elements that function as Theme and how they are different from the elements marked by un/nun. The investigation is based on a manual analysis of a corpus of 537 clauses from 17 Korean written texts spanning three text types, expounding, reporting and recreating, drawing on Halliday’s systemic functional linguistic theory (SFL). The results of the analysis unearth certain patterns, which will be presented in the paper through the system network of THEME1 in Korean. The approach taken in the study is trinocular: from above, from around and from below (cf. Halliday & Matthiessen 2004). That is, firstly, SFL theory has provided general linguistic principles that can be applied in describing any language (from above); secondly, rigorous reference has been made to a range of systemic functional descriptions of other languages and also to earlier studies of un/nun and i/ka in Korean (from around); and lastly, but most importantly, this study is based on the quantitative analysis of the corpus, which consists of a number of authentic Korean texts. A detailed description of the data is provided in Kim (2011) along with an introduction of the theoretical framework, a discussion of the methodological issues that were considered in the data analysis process and a critical review of existing studies of Theme in Korean from the theoretical perspective of SFL. A few examples will be provided to show how the choices are made within discourse but more examples can be found with a lengthy discussion in Kim (2007, Chapter 4). 2 The system of THEME in Korean The system network of THEME in Korean presented in Figure 12 includes three sub- systems of THEME in declarative clauses in Korean, INTERPERSONAL, TEXTUAL and TOPICAL. Firstly, INTERPERSONAL THEME and TEXTUAL THEME simply offer options for expressing such Themes at the beginning of the clause. The clause-functional Theme has an experiential function but the absolute Theme does not have any experiential function but serves just as Theme3. When the Theme has an experiential function, it is a marked or unmarked Theme depending on what experiential function it has. The unmarked Theme is the most typical type of topical Theme that functions as a Participant and is conflated with the Subject. The unmarked Theme is prototypically marked by un/nun but is marked by i/ka when the status of information assigned to the Theme is noteworthy. The prototypical unmarked Theme tends to be elided when it is recoverable either because it has been introduced in the preceding discourse or is obvious within the context. The noteworthy unmarked Theme can be also elided under a similar circumstance in spoken 2 It is a revised version of the model proposed in Kim (2007). 3 Chinese has the same phenomenon of absolute Theme as briefly explained in Section 2.3. For details, see Halliday and McDonald (2004). 6 Korean (Shin and Kim 2008). However, both of them are explicit in the topic sentence of the paragraph. The marked Theme is the Theme of which experiential function is a Circumstance or Participant that is conflated with the Complement. When a circumstantial marked Theme is marked by un/nun, the Theme stands out and indicates a shift of focus. When it is not marked by un/nun, it still has a thematic status but it is less prominent than one marked by un/nun. Thus in this case, the Theme should be extended to the Subject of the clause. When a Complement functions as Theme, it may or may not be marked by un/nun. Each kind of Theme is explained below in detail. 2.1 Textual Theme The textual Theme orients the reader to the relationship of the clause with the preceding discourse or indicates continuity with the previous discourse. The former function is realized through a conjunction or conjunctive Adjunct (e.g. however, in other words, furthermore) and the latter through a continuative element (e.g. well, yes, oh) (Matthiessen 1995:538). When a conjunction or conjunctive Adjunct such as 그리고 (kuliko) and and 그러나 (kulena) but or a continuative element such as 글쎄요 (kulsseyo) well comes before the Subject at the beginning of the clause, it functions as a textual Theme in Korean. However, Korean has the predominant feature of clause chaining, which is also found in Japanese (Thomson 2005). That is, Korean clause-chain final suffixes, which function as structural conjunctions such as -고 (-ko) and and –만 (-man) but, come at the end of the clause in Korean, in contrast with the placement of structural conjunctions in English. Thus while English aligns the logical (structural conjunctions) with the textual (cohesive conjunctions) at the beginning of the clause, Korean aligns the logical with the interpersonal within the verbal group serving as Predicator as does Japanese. 2.2 Interpersonal Theme The interpersonal Theme orients the speaker’s evaluation and attitude toward the proposition realized by the clause. It is realized by a Vocative element (e.g. Sir, Mr Smith), modal comment Adjunct (e.g. foolishly, fortunately) or Finite verb in English (Halliday and Matthiessen 2004). In Korean, however, Finite verbs are not related to interpersonal Theme as the verbal group comes at the end of the clause and does not play any role in the realization of contrasts in mood — such contrasts being realized by verbal suffixes. However, a Vocative element or a modal comment Adjunct such as 다행히도 (tahaynghito) fortunately can be placed before the Subject and when it is, it functions as an interpersonal Theme.

The study makes a contribution to the increasing number of anthropological, legal, pedagogical, philosophical, political, and socio-legal studies concerned with pragmatism and hope by approaching crisis as ground, hope as figure, and pragmatism as transition or placeholder between them. In effect this work makes evident the agency of the past in the apprehension of the present, whose complexity is conceptualized as scale, in order to hopefully refigure ethnography’s future role as an anticipatory process rather than a pragmatic response to crisis or an always already emergent world. This dissertation is based on over two years of fieldwork inside NGOs, NPOs, and think tanks, hundreds of conversations, over a hundred interviews, and archival research in Seoul, South Korea. The transformation of the “386 generation” and Roh Moo Hyun’s presidency from 2003 to 2008 serve as both the contextual background and central figures of the study. This work replicates the historical, contemporary, and anticipated transitions of my informants by responding to the problem of agency inherent in crisis with a sense of scale and a rescaling of agency.

    World Englishes, Vol. 33, No. 1, pp. 33–49, 2014. 0883-2919 English on Korean television JAMIE SHINHEE LEE∗ ABSTRACT: This study discusses verbal humor in entertainment media and examines polarizing representations of English on Korean television. English is a source of stress as well as a medium of humor. Language anxiety about English speaking skills is frequently focalized and viewed as a personal challenge by Korean celebrities, but they often transform their linguistic ‘complex’ into humorous talk. This study argues that using English, possibly the most revered and yet the most feared language in Korea, in humor is sociolinguistically significant, embodying attitudinal, emotional, and experiential ambivalence about English in globalization-minded contemporary Korea. The findings of the study suggest that generation- conscious ageism regarding English proficiency typically characterizes senior citizens as sociolinguistically underperforming, which sometimes forces them to be in a vulnerable position both in familial and social contexts. Increasing use of English on Korean television divides bilingual viewers and monolingual viewers and whether one can be entertained and humored by television programs may become another English- related stratification variable in Korea. INTRODUCTION English is used increasingly in verbal humor in Korean entertainment media, and a common theme is English speaking skills and language anxiety. Using English in Korean humor is sociolinguistically consequential considering that the English language signifies attitudinal and emotional duality—coexistence of devotion or even fanaticism and odium—for many Koreans. English is possibly the most revered and at the same time the most feared foreign language in contemporary Korea (Lee 2007), and ambivalent stances exist both individually and collectively as a society (Lee 2012).

    Photo Release REVIEWING SEA DYKE BEST PRACTICES IN SOUTH KOREA, MINISTER BAMBANG VISITED SAEMANGEUM SEAWALL GUNSAN – Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas Bambang Brodjonegoro visited Saemangeum Seawall, a man-made 33 kilometers dyke located in Gunsan, a city 231 kilometers away from Seoul, the capital city of South Korea. Saemangeum Seawall commenced its establishment in 1991 and completed in 2010 with a total area of 401 kilometers square, consists of 283 kilometers square of land and 118 kilometers square area of freshwater lake. Saemangeum Seawall management systems runs for main functions, namely flood forecasting and warning system to protect local residents’ life and property, marine environment system to monitor environmental changes in the marine ecosystem, facility management system to integrate facility management, and water management system to effective water resources management. Accompanied by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC), Minister Bambang visited Saemangeum Seawall 33 Centers, the central spot of the seawall-dyke. The visit to Saemangeum Seawall is beneficial to gather information summarizes best practices implemented at the South Korea’s integrated coastal development which potentially contribute to the development of Java’s northern coastal area. Geodesy data obtained by Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency stated that land subsidence caused by load of buildings and uncontrolled groundwater extraction has reached 3 to 18 centimeters deep. Though the numbers differ in each location, land subsidence’s most severe impact occurred in Muara Baru, North Jakarta, which makes the area suffers gradually from tidal flood. Without proper actions, it is estimated that Jakarta’s land surface will descend 30 percent in 2050.

    Shore Explorer - 1000 km, April 23, 2011 This ACP sanctioned 1000km Shore Explorer was designed to highlight stunning coastal features of the South Korean peninsula without ignoring the enchanting countryside with its rice fields and mysterious mountains. Starting from Gwangju riders will head east towards the Jirisan Mountains into the rising sun. From Gurye cyclists will follow the Seomjin River and merge with the southern coast in Sacheon. After crossing most spectacular bridges we will meander along the shores of islands (Changseondo, Namhaeddo, Jido and Wando) and peninsulas protruding like fingers from the mainland. From Wando we will head west past Haenam to join the Yellow Sea at Mokpo. From there riders will turn north and follow the coastline for 200+ kilometers. As part of this we will cross of few bridges that lay testimony to Korea’s engineering skills and visit islands with picturesque fishing villages (live octopus - Nak-ji - should be on the Randonneur’s menu and is particularly good in Doripo and Donha) and scintillating scenery. 700km into the ride cyclists will leave the coastal road, turn northwest and continue on the 32 long Saemangeum Seawall, the longest structure of its kind; the piece of ocean it captures will be home Asia’s newest mega city. After this exhilarating, yet possibly very windy, experience we will head east into Gunsan. The final 200 km will take us south through a mix of farmland, rolling hills and some serious climbs crossing the Naejangsan Mountains before we return to Gwangju. Firstly six different word-formation processes, including blending, was described. Those were compounding, clipping, backformation, acronyming, derivation and blending. The investigation was done by using a list of blends from Wikipedia. The words were looked up in the Longman dictionary of 2005 and in a dictionary online. A google search and a corpus investigation were also conducted. The investigation suggested that most of the blends were made by clipping and the second most common form was clipping and overlapping. Blends with only overlapping was unusual and accounted for only three percent. The investigation also suggested that the most common way to create blends by clipping was to use the first part of the first word and the last part of the second word. The blends were not only investigated according to their structure but also according to the domains they occur in. This part of the investigation suggested that the blends were most frequent in the technical domain, but also in the domain of society. Table of contents 1.
