  • Dumb Blonde Ambition
Dumb Blonde Ambition:: Legally Blonde, Postfeminism and the Reimagination of the ‘‘Strong Female Character ’’ By: Lucy Ford @lucyj_ford University of Leeds BA Cultural Studies April 2014 11 Introduction What does it mean to be considered ‘strong’? The word itself can be interpreted as anything from physical force and intelligence, to competency, courage and morality. With these diverse definitions in mind, are we able to secure one concrete explanation of what it is to consider someone ‘strong’; and, if we are, can that ever be transpired into adequate cinematic representation? Over the past century, cinema has reigned supreme as one of our most prevalent and prominent cultural artefacts. Contributing to many of our most engrained social stereotypes and tropes, the influence of cinematic representation has an enormous effect on how we construct images both on screen and in our society. The ‘strong female character’ is one of the tropes to have arisen from the influence of cinema, and now contributes to one of the most recognisable and popular genre characterisations. The ‘strong female character’ came into existence from a backlash by the feminist movement of the 1960s and 70s, due to the fact that, up until then, female representation had been reduced to sidelined girlfriends or ‘damsels in distress’. As a result, the ‘strong female character’ emerged as a classification of female illustration, and it is used to portray one basic idea; ‘strength’. However, as we have and will come to see, ‘strength’ is not a term easily defined or illustrated and so many of the representations of ‘strength’ that we see on screen are stereotypes, marginalisation’s and tropes not dissimilar from the ones we see with the ‘damsel in distress’.

Legally Blonde: A Challenge on Blonde Stereotype By: Diah Nur Aini C 0301022 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study “A stereotype is a standardized conception or image of a specific group of people or objects. It exaggerates and exploits one or two attributes of a given group or class and applies to all member of that group without any distinction. It has a purpose to set that group apart from the mainstream.” (Jack Nachbar and Kevin Lause, p. 336). Jokes about the stereotypes are always present in everyday life and these stereotypes may affect these people’s lives and view on them. • Legally Blonde (Mgm 2001)
Movie Title: LEGALLY BLONDE (MGM 2001) Starring: Reese Witherspoon; Luke Wilson; Selma Blair Lessons: Criminal Law/Procedure Constitutional Law Plot: A blonde and bold California sorority girl follows her college boyfriend to Harvard Law School after he dumps her for a “more serious” girlfriend, Vivian Kensington (Selma Blair), also a Harvard Law classmate. Elle winds up losing passion for her beau but finding passion in the law. Thoroughly entertaining and sufficiently “feel good,” law students must temporarily suspend their disbelief because we all know that you cannot go from getting a 143 to a 179 on the LSATs after only a few practice sessions with the sorority sisters, no matter what cleverness lies beneath those golden locks. Elle not only gets accepted to Harvard Law, but she finds herself assisting her Criminal Law professor in the defense of an aerobics queen she idolizes, her sorority sister Brooke Taylor Windham. Brooke Windham is being tried for murder, accused of shooting her rich, 60-year-old husband. Elle believes in Brooke’s innocence. After she loses respect for her perverted professor, Elle suddenly takes over Brooke’s case, with the help and support of her new love interest, Emmett (Luke Wilson), a young attorney on the professor’s staff. CRIMINAL LAW/PROCEDURE After the good professor proves to be a sleaze, his client fires him and Elle takes on Brooke Windham’s defense (Scene 28). To support her right to represent Brooke, Elle cites a Massachusetts court rule allowing a law student to try criminal cases in some situations. Massachusetts does have such a rule, but it would never be applied in this case.
