ABSTRACT Feminism is a word that strikes up many connotations, but has no set definition. Though it might take on different definitions, its overall goal is equality. Feminism has appeared throughout history in various waves, the third-wave is currently in progress. Two artifacts from this wave of feminism include Legally Blonde and How to Get Away With Murder. This thesis utilizes feminist rhetorical criticism to analyze how third-wave feminism appears in each artifact, and what implications that has for the progression of feminism. The research identified two types of feminism, girlie feminism in Legally Blonde, and intersectional in How to Get Away With Murder, respectively. The different types of feminism in each artifact lead to the finding that each is indicative of what third wave feminism was concerned with at the time. Legally Blonde and girlie feminism were geared towards making femininity acceptable in the workplace and compatible with feminism. How to Get Away With Murder and intersectionality are focused on inclusivity in feminism. Despite these differences, both artifacts work for the benefit of feminism, and advancing its ultimate goal of equality. CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Television and films are prevalent forms of media. It is evident that both have left an indelible effect on audiences. When statistics show that “there are 2.3 televisions in each home” in the United States, escaping their wide influence poses a difficult challenge.1 Television and films are influential because they are “communicating something – ideas, attitudes, values – content with implications and consequences for human action.”2 This statement from communication scholar Gage Chapel also presents an interesting insinuation concerning media; particularly how influential television and films can be for their audiences. Both media forms remain ubiquitous aspects of American culture with the ability to communicate a variety of ideologies and beliefs to a broad range of audiences. Scholars and critics in the field of rhetoric have focused on what particular ideas both forms of media express. This thesis aims to examine how the media portrays female professionals, specifically, the portrayal of female attorneys in the film Legally Blonde and the television series How to Get Away With Murder.     JUDITH LORBER The Variety of Feminisms and their Contribution to Gender Equality Introduction My focus is the continuities and discontinuities in recent feminist ideas and perspectives. I am going to discuss the development of feminist theories as to the sources of gender inequality and its pervasiveness, and the different feminist political solutions and remedies based on these theories. I will be combining ideas from different feminist writers, and usually will not be talking about any specific writers. A list of readings can be found at the end. Each perspective has made important contributions to improving women's status, but each also has limitations. Feminist ideas of the past 35 years changed as the limitations of one set of ideas were critiqued and addressed by what was felt to be a better set of ideas about why women and men were so unequal. It has not been a clear progression by any means, because many of the debates went on at the same time. As a matter of fact, they are still going on. And because all of the feminist perspectives have insight into the problems of gender inequality, and all have come up with good strategies for remedying these problems, all the feminisms are still very much with us. Thus, there are continuities and convergences, as well as sharp debates, among the different feminisms. Any one feminist may incorporate ideas from several perspec- tives, and many feminists have shifted their perspectives over the years. I myself was originally a liberal feminist, then a so- 8 JUDITH LORBER cialist feminist, and now consider myself to be primarily a so- cial construction feminist, with overtones of postmodernism and queer theory.

Moreover, analysis about emotion in the novel is challenging because it cannot be analyzed by facial expression of the character but based on the narration and the dialogue of the character. The purposes of this study are to analyze the secondary emotions and the factors that cause it toward Clotilde Destange’s Character in The Blonde Lady novel by Maurice LeBlanc. Ten Houten’s present theory from Plutchik about secondary emotion was suitable to be used as the theory to identify the secondary emotions that are appears in the Clotilde’s Character and the theory from Plutchik about emotion as a chain of event to examine the factors that cause secondary emotion of Clotilde’s character. The qualitative method was used to analyze the novel. This research uses sentences, pages, narration, dialogues, and paragraph that related to the secondary emotion in The Blonde Lady novels. The results of the study show that the secondary emotion appeared in the main female character. The study also was identified that the factors that cause the secondary emotion of Clotilde’s character is come from the stimulus event which followed by cognition, feeling states, overt behavior.

Yet fascinating discussions around gender and sexuality were also happening in the early- and mid- 1970’s, ones that illuminate not only the evolution of movements and ideas during these decades, but also our own historical moment. This paper, which relies on primary sources, situates questions of sexual object choice, gender non-conformity, racialization, and “bisexuality” in the historical moment(s) of the 1970’s. These histories also have important connections to the contemporary moment of LGBT identities. I argue that today both bisexuality and transgender, while certainly acknowledged as labels that fit with lesbian and gay in a certain sense, are treated discursively and materially differently than the latter two, so often violently. For this reason, the last section of my paper draws connections between the 1970’s and the present. She depicts that the violence can save one’s life. The reserach presents the idea that outcome of violence can be a means of success in Oates’ stories. Oates’ optimistic view toward violence and positive effects of violence in the life oppressed characters are presented in this article. The writer of this article has made an attempt to attest positive aftermath of violence and to highlight different sorts of violence in Oates’ fiction by referring to aforementioned Žižek’s ideas on violence.

    Postfeminist Double Binds: Volume 6 Number 2 How Six Contemporary Films Perpetuate the September 2009 Myth of the Incomplete Woman Samantha Senda-Cook University of Utah Sweet Home Alabama, The Wedding Planner, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Down With Love, Never Been Kissed, and Miss Congeniality appear to promote feminist ideals. They feature smart, successful women who are determined to excel at their careers. However, each face a truly difficult decision—the career or the man? In a modern twist on two classic double binds, these six films contrive situations that place the potential male lover in direct opposition to career advancement. In some cases, the women keep their jobs, but in all they prioritize love, specifically “true love.” Additionally, the films each emphasize some transformation that the main character must undergo before she can ultimately succeed personally and professionally. While three films require the woman to relax—not worry so much about her career—the other three depict an ugly-duckling tale. Using Gregory Bateson’s concept of the double bind, Kathleen Hall Jamieson’s articulation of the double binds that women face, and theories of postfeminism, I contend that these films attract a large number of viewers by misusing the tenets of feminism. Kelley's major points are as follows. He is more ambivalent than is generally the case in popular philosophy about many of the traditional sources of happiness. In regard to the maxim that money can't buy happiness he gives space to characters who assert that there is a relationship between material comfort and happiness, as well as to those that claim the opposite position. He is similarly ambivalent about the relationship between loving relationships and happiness; and friendships and happiness.
