Elle Woods has the perfect life. She's a senior at UCLA, president of the Delta Nu sorority and boasts a 4.0 GPA in fashion merchandising. On top of that, she and her boyfriend (of perfect of pedigree), Warner Huntington III, live like “gods among men” on campus. Elle knows the perfect way to end her senior year: a proposal from Warner. The show opens with the sisters of Delta Nu in a flutter, knowing tonight is the night for Warner's proposal to Elle.

With her perfect dress, her chihuahua (Bruiser), and her sorority sisters at her side, Elle is ready for what she imagines will be the best night of her life. Warner escorts her to a romantic restaurant and as he takes her hand, everything appears to be going as planned. He starts discussing their future together, insisting it’s “time to get serious." Just as Elle is expecting Warner to drop down on one knee, Warner tells her they should break up.

Heartbroken and in disbelief, Elle hides herself away in her sorority house where her sisters work to comfort her. During one of these comfort sessions, Elle spots a photo of Warner’s brother, Peyton Huntington IV, and his new bride. After taking one look at Warner’s new sister-in-law, Elle is struck with the notion that she now knows exactly the kind of girl Warner wants by his side: “Someone serious, someone lawyerly, someone who wears black even when nobody’s dead.” From that moment on, Elle decides she’ll get into Harvard Law as well and show Warner just how serious she can be.

Despite having a 4.0 GPA, Elle soon learns that getting into Harvard is no easy task. She spends the latter half of her senior year studying to get a score of more than 174 on the LSAT, the exam necessary to enter law school. After months of hard work, Elle scores a 175, wows the admissions officers of Harvard Law with her music video-take on a personal essay and finds herself accepted into the hallowed halls of Harvard Law.

Elle’s first few months at Harvard are completely overwhelming. Not only are her classmates’ résumés impressively extensive (Fulbright and Rhodes recipients and members of the ), Warner has already moved onto a new girlfriend, Vivienne Kensington. Elle decides to go brunette, just like Vivienne, to prove how “serious” she is at winning back Warner’s love. She lands at Paulette Bonafonte’s salon “The Hair Affair." Paulette becomes a quick confidant and convinces her that she already has everything she needs to win him back, including the hair color. Despite her renewed confidence, Warner shows no interest in Elle. Due to her singular focus on Warner, Elle finds herself failing law school and often getting kicked out of class. Professor Callahan’s teaching assistant, Emmett Forrest, befriends Elle and convinces her she needs to get a “chip on her shoulder” and devote herself to her studies. Thanks to her new friends, Paulette and Emmett, Elle decides to give Harvard Law everything she has and prove to Warner once and for all they are meant to be together. 3 Elle puts her nose in a book and proves to Professor Callahan that she might have what it takes to become a serious lawyer. Elle learns the power of practicing law when she helps Paulette get back her dog from Dewey, Paulette’s deadbeat ex-boyfriend. Everything changes at the end of Act I when Callahan has been hired by Brooke Wyndham, a famous exercise star, to represent her in a murder trial. Callahan decides to post his intern list early so they may assist with the case. Warner, Vivienne and Enid all make the list and Emmett is asked to work as Callahan’s co-counsel. Overcome with happiness, Warner proposes to Vivienne as Elle watches nearby. Elle’s journey to Harvard and her hard work seem like a waste until Emmett points out that Elle has also made the team. Elle realizes that nothing has ever felt better than seeing her name up on that list. Although her journey starts as a way to find her man, Elle ends up finding herself.

“But we’re not actually 'here' here. We’re just in your head.”

Everyone could use their own Greek Chorus!

Elle is lucky enough to have her own Greek Chorus to aide her through her journey at Harvard Law School. However, a Greek Chorus is nothing new. Since the very dawn of theatre, there has been a Greek Chorus.

Theatre began in Ancient Greece. Groups of 50 men would dance and sing hymns of praise to Dionysus, the god of the vine, fertility and, of course, theatre.

Over time, the Greek Chorus evolved and changed. Soon, the Greek Chorus became a key part of both Greek comedies and tragedies. The Greek Chorus was made up of anywhere from 12 to 50 players. All players would work to portray the action as one and everything would be performed in complete unison. These players would, in essence, give the audience information that would not otherwise come from characters in the show. Information like location, backstory or unseen action would all be revealed by the Greek Chorus.

While the Greek Chorus isn’t commonly used in theatrical storytelling today, it is a tried and true method that makes an effective reappearance every once in a while, like here in Elle Woods’ story. end scene 10 MEET ELLE’S GODDESSES AND THE GREEK GODS AND GODDESSES THEY TAKE AFTER

end scene 13 THE JOURNEY TO LAW SCHOOL

“What? Like it’s hard?”-Elle Woods

Elle studies hard and gets accepted into one of the best law schools in the country. She practically makes it look easy. Below are some of the steps necessary to get into some of the top schools in the country.

YALE LAW SCHOOL: STANFORD LAW SCHOOL: Tuition Fees: $54,650 Tuition Fees: $52,530 Bar Pass Rate: 94% Bar Pass Rate: 94% Acceptance Rate: 9.4% Acceptance Rate: 10.3% Average LSAT Score: 173 Average LSAT Score: 171 Average GPA: 3.9 Average GPA: 3.87

HARVARD LAW SCHOOL: COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY: Tuition Fees: $53,308 Tuition Fees: $57,838 Bar Pass Rate: 96% Bar Pass Rate: 95% Acceptance Rate: 15.6% Acceptance Rate: 21.3% Average LSAT Score: 173 Average LSAT Score: 171 Average GPA: 3.88 Average GPA: 3.7

UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO LAW SCHOOL: Tuition Fees: $53,361 Bar Pass Rate: 93% Acceptance Rate: 19.6% Average LSAT Score: 170 Average GPA: 3.9

Not only do you need a strong GPA to get into a great law school, you also need a great LSAT score. But, what exactly is an LSAT?

LSAT: Just like you might have to take the ACT or SAT to get into your college of choice, if you’re planning on heading to law school, you’re going to have to take the LSAT. The LSAT is designed to test students and make sure they have the critical skills necessary to succeed in law school.

Once Elle arrives at Harvard Law, she is surrounded by students who performed as well as, or better than, her on the LSAT. Still, success on the LSAT is just the beginning of their qualifications. Her peers name off accomplishment after accomplishment in "The Harvard Variations." There are Rhodes Scholars, Fulbright Scholarship winners, and members of the Peace Corps. But what do all of those mean?

14 RHODES SCHOLARSHIP:

The Rhodes Scholarship was created in accordance with the will of historical figure, Cecil John Rhodes. After his passing in April of 1902, Mr. Rhodes declared a majority of his fortune was to be given out as a scholarship to young men in order to attend the highly regarded Oxford University in London, England.

Today, the Rhodes Scholarship is one of the most competitive and desired scholarships one can receive. 32 scholarships are awarded to students across the United States every year. The scholarship is awarded to those who have not only “outstanding scholarly achievements, but for their character, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may lead.”

FULBRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP:

Thanks to Arkansas Senator J. William Fulbright and President Harry S. Truman, we have the Fulbright Scholarship. Mr. Fulbright proposed the scholarship in 1945 to promote “international good will through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture and science.”

A year after Mr. Fulbright’s proposal, President Truman signed the Fulbright Act into law. Since its inception, it has grown into “the most widely recognized and prestigious international exchange program in the world.” Each year, 8,000 grants are awarded. Grants go to about 1,900 students from the United States and 4,000 foreign students. An additional 1,200 scholars from the United States, as well as 900 students from out of the country also receive awards.

PEACE CORPS:

On March 1, 1961, President John F. Kennedy signed an executive order creating the Peace Corps. “The Peace Corps is a service opportunity for motivated changemakers to immerse themselves in a community abroad, working side by side with local leaders to tackle the most pressing challenges of our generation.”

Since its inception, over 220,000 Americans have volunteered their time to this organization.

end scene 15 WOMEN AND THE LAW

“So often in life, things that you regard as an impediment turn out to be great good fortune.” –Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Elle thinks her life is over when Warner breaks up with her before he heads to Harvard Law School. She is determined to win him back and follows him to Harvard – no easy feat. Along the way, she discovers more about herself, and what she is capable of, than she ever thought possible.

Elle isn’t the only woman in the world of law who has had a rough go of it. Below are some important female historical figures in United States Law.

ARABELLA MANSFIELD:

Arabella Mansfield was the first female lawyer in the United States. She applied and was accepted into the Iowa Bar with her husband in 1869. Of Mansfield, the Iowa Bar examiners wrote that her test was “the very best rebuke possible to the imputation that ladies cannot qualify for the practice of law.” Although Arabella Mansfield never ended up actually practicing, passing the bar made her the first female lawyer in the country.

ADA KEPLEY:

In 1870, Ada Kepley became the first woman in the country to graduate from law school. She graduated from Chicago University Law School which later became Northwestern University School of Law. Even though Ada graduated from law school, the Illinois Bar would not permit her to take the Bar Exam due to the fact that she was a woman. Women in Illinois were still not permitted to take the Illinois Bar Exam.

In 1872, Ada Kepley helped develop legislation that prohibited sex based discrimination in matters of employment, and in 1881, she was admitted to the bar.

CHARLOTTE E. RAY:

In 1869, the then only 4-year-old Howard University hired Charlotte E. Ray as a teacher in its Preparatory and Normal Department, where those who wanted to become teachers would study. However, Charlotte E. Ray wanted not only to teach, but to continue her studies in law. At this point in time, Howard University Law School strongly discouraged women from applying. Charlotte E. Ray decided to take her gender out of the application process by applying under the name C.E. Ray.

Charlotte E. Ray was accepted into the Howard University Law School, and became the first African-American woman to graduate any law school in the United States. She graduated in 1872, and was also only the third woman to graduate from any law school in America. 16 FLORENCE E. ALLEN:

In 1922, Florence Ellinwood Allen became the first woman to win a seat on the Ohio Supreme Court. This also made her the first woman to win a seat on the supreme court of any state.

In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Allen to the Sixth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals, making her the first woman judge in federal court.

SANDRA DAY O’CONNOR:

In 1981, President Ronald Reagan appointed Sandra Day O’Connor as the first woman to the Supreme Court of the United States of America. She was the first female justice in the 191- year history of the Supreme Court. Sandra Day O’Connor said of her nomination to the Supreme Court, “His decision was as much a surprise to me as it was to the nation as a whole. But Ronald Reagan knew that his decision wasn’t about Sandra Day O’Connor; it was about women everywhere. It was about a nation that was on its way to bridging a chasm between genders that had divided us for too long.”

By the time Sandra Day O’Connor retired in 2006, the number of women enrolled in law schools across the nation had risen from 36 percent, to 48 percent.

SONIA SOTOMAYOR:

On May 26, 2009 Sonia Sotomayor became the first Latina Supreme Court Justice in the history of the United States. She was appointed by President Barack Obama and was voted onto the court by a vote of 68 to 31.

Her law career began in 1984. Despite being in the private practice, her pro bono work began to catch the attention of Senator Ted Kennedy and Senator Patrick Moynihan. President George H.W. Bush nominated her to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York City in 1992, and she was confirmed unanimously. She became the youngest judge on that court when she was confirmed.

On June 25, 1997, President Bill Clinton nominated her for the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals. She also taught law at New York University in 1998, Columbia Law School in 1999 and received several honorary degrees, all adding up to quite an incredible career in law. end scene 17 POST-SHOW DISCUSSION

2. Which character do you identify with most?

3. If you had to pick people in your life to be your own Greek Chorus, who would you choose?

4. Toward the end of the show, Vivienne and Elle are able to set aside their differences and come together as friends. Did this surprise you? What do you think caused the turn in their relationship?

end scene 18 RÉSUMÉ BUILDING ACTIVITY

It doesn’t have to be scented like Elle’s, but the skill to build a great résumé is an important one. It is your first impression when applying for almost any job, and you need to find a way to stand out from the pack.

STEP 1: Compile all of your work history. Make sure you know start and end dates for your job, your job position and all of your work responsibilities while at that job.

If you’ve never had a job before, compile any work-like experience. This includes any places you may have interned or volunteered at. Other information to gather includes:

• A list of any and all schools attended including your graduation year (or expected graduation year)

• Any awards that you have been given

• Any special skills you have (excellent typing skills, experience using Microsoft programs, experience with different social media platforms)

STEP 2: Choose a résumé format or layout. There are three popular formats to choose from.

• Chronological Résumé Format - This format is best for people who have a good amount of work experience. You’ll be listing all of your work experience chronologically, starting with the most recent. This is the format employers are most familiar with.

• Functional Résumé Format - This format works best for people who may be new to the workforce or whose work history may not match up perfectly with the job they are currently applying for. Instead of focusing on an applicant's former work experience, the focus will be on an applicants relevant skills.

• Combination Résumé Format - This format still works best for people who are switching careers, or have a gap in their work history. It also combines the best parts from each of the other two résumé formats. In this format, you’ll focus first on your relevant skills and then list your work experience, starting with the most recent.

STEP 3: Once you have gathered all of the information needed for your résumé and picked your résumé format, you can begin to build your résumé.

See résumé examples on the next two pages
