INTRODUCTION

About Us The Nebraska High School Theater Academy (NHSTA) is an education program produced by Omaha Performing Arts, the largest arts institution in Nebraska. In addition to presenting Broadway, jazz, dance, and other professional touring shows the Orpheum Theater and the Holland Center, education and community engagement programs is a central part of our mission. Our education offerings take the performing arts beyond our venues and into classrooms across Nebraska. To learn more visit OmahaPerformingArts.org/Learn-and-Engage.

Mission The Nebraska High School Theater Academy is designed to: • Celebrate the artistic achievements of teachers and students involved in theater • Support schools by providing high-quality learning, performing and creative experiences for students • Advocate for the importance of theater education in Nebraska middle schools and high schools

History Omaha Performing Arts launched the Nebraska High School Theatre Academy (formerly the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards) in 2013 with an inaugural group of 22 Omaha-area high schools. Over the past 6 years the Nebraska High School Theater Academy has evolved into a statewide network that connects high schools and middle schools with a wide variety of theater education resources. Last year, the program expanded its reach over 450 miles to serve 78 schools while also receiving a new look and name change. This season, the NHSTA program will accept up to 70 high schools and 10 middle schools across Nebraska.

How It Works Schools are invited to register for the program each fall. a school is registered, students and teachers receive exclusive access to a catalogue of learning opportunities, including:

• In-School Workshops – request a professional theater artist to visit your classroom and lead a workshop on a topic of your choice.

• Adjudication – have a team of performing arts professionals attend your musical, play or one-act to provide written or oral feedback.

• Broadway Tickets – be notified when free or discounted tickets to Broadway touring shows are available.

REGISTRATION

Eligibility The Nebraska High School Theater Academy is open to grades 6-12 at any public or private school in the state of Nebraska. Schools do not need to produce a show to participate; however, there are eligibility guidelines for schools that want to be considered for awards (see page 4) or students who want to participate in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (see page 14).

Registration & Fees To participate, schools must submit the online registration form. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis starting in August each year. Cost of registration is $100 for the 2018/2019 school year (this is a one-time payment that covers your school’s participation in all NHSTA events for the entire school year).

• New to the NHSTA program? Here is a link to the registration form.

• Returning NHSTA schools can register here or simply email us at [email protected] and we’ll send you an invoice.

Registration will open August 15, 2018 and remain open until November 15, 2018 or until we hit max capacity of 70 high schools and 10 middle schools. Spots fill up quickly and schools are encouraged to register early!

After submitting the online registration form, an OPA staff member will send you a confirmation email with an invoice. Registration fees are due within 90 days of receiving the invoice. Checks should be made payable to Omaha Performing Arts. Registration fee waivers or discounts are available for schools demonstrating financial need.

Primary Each school must identify a primary contact person on the online registration form. The primary contact should have regular access to phone and email as all major correspondence regarding the program will be directed to this person.

Time Commitment Omaha Performing Arts knows that many hours of hard work that teachers put in each day. One of the goals of the program is not to create additional work for teachers, but to provide visibility for the work that is already being produced. During the school year, there is little additional time commitment from teachers other than communicating information from Omaha Performing Arts staff to students and vice versa.

Assessment Teachers and students will be asked to complete printed or electronic surveys following certain program activities. OPA may also request letters of support and testimonials. Surveys will evaluate participants’ experiences and aid in the development of future program activities. OPA also hosts an annual feedback meeting and reception for teachers in June.

Teacher Advisory Committee The NHSTA teacher advisory committee meets 2-3 times a year to provide feedback and help determine the future of the program. Meetings will take place in-person at the Holland Center and/or via conference call. To become a member of this committee for the 2018/2019 school year and receive more information email [email protected].

2

PUBLICITY & SOCIAL MEDIA

One of the goals of the Nebraska High School Theater Academy is to enhance visibility of participating schools’ performing arts programs. Omaha Performing Arts may post production photos and show information from participating schools on the Nebraska High School Theater Academy website and social media sites. OPA may also share show information with local media personnel. We want to help promote the great work you’re doing with your students! You can email stories, photos and videos to [email protected] for us to share out.

Omaha Performing Arts also encourages schools to announce their participation in the Nebraska High School Theater Academy in school newspapers, websites, social media sites, newsletters, and other materials produced or distributed by the school.

All participating schools with adjudicated musicals, plays or one-acts should plan on including the official NHSTA PARTICIPATION STATEMENT in their printed program books (see page 19 for details).

ADJUDICATION Omaha Performing Arts has selected a team of performing arts professionals across the state with backgrounds in education, music, theater, dance, and related fields to serve as adjudicators to evaluate school shows. Adjudication is one of many learning opportunities offered through the NHSTA program. Adjudication is optional, and there are many ways to take advantage of this learning opportunity in your school (you can choose one or all three):

Option #1: Pre-Show Evaluation & Oral Feedback Any registered school can request to have an adjudicator visit them and provide oral feedback during rehearsals for their musical, play or one-act at any time. Adjudicators are often also available to lead workshops on a variety of topics based on the school’s needs/interests (this includes feedback and training for choirs, dance troupes and other performance groups at registered schools). You can book multiple pre-show evaluations and still receive feedback on other shows.

 HOW IT WORKS: Contact us at [email protected] to request our list of pre-show evaluators with contact information. We are happy to make suggestions for pre-show evaluations, but schools should reach out to pre-show evaluators directly to arrange the details.

Option #2: Written Feedback Any registered school can receive written feedback from adjudicators on their musicals, plays and one-acts. Regardless of which adjudication track (if any) you decide to move forward with, our goal is to provide you and your students with a high-quality feedback that celebrates students’ work and encourages them to grow. Feedback is designed to function as an educational tool, not strictly a review or critique. Typically, 3 adjudicators from our team of 50+ theater professionals statewide will attend your show to provide written feedback on performances by students in lead, supporting and ensemble roles, as well as the overall production.

 HOW IT WORKS: If you provided show information on your registration form, OPA staff will email your primary contact a Production Information Form (see page 19) to complete at least 1 month prior to your show. Didn’t include show info on your registration form, but want to receive written feedback? Please contact us – to assign adjudicators to your show, we need to know dates, times, and other details ASAP! Your completed Production Information Form is due at least 3 weeks prior to your show. After receiving your Production Information Form, OPA staff will email you to confirm which performances will be attended by adjudicators. Please be prepared to hold up to 6 tickets under the name “OPA Adjudicator” (2 per adjudicator x 3 adjudicators). Please note that the adjudication panel may or may not attend the same performance – tickets should be held for the performance date/time requested by OPA staff. Adjudicators will submit written feedback to OPA staff within 3 business of attending your show. OPA staff will proof feedback to ensure quality and consistency. OPA staff will email you the final, proofed feedback in approx. 1-2 weeks after the show.

Option #3: Written Feedback & Scores In addition to receiving written feedback (same process as above), you can request to have your production scored for awards. Scores are confidential and only used to help adjudicators determine winners at the end of the year. A scoring rubric and evaluation criteria are provided below.

 HOW IT WORKS: This option is currently only available to middle school and high school musicals that take place between September 21, 2018 and May 5, 2019. To choose this option simply follow the same process for requesting written feedback above. As long as your school meets the eligibility requirements and gone through the process for requesting written feedback your production will be scored and in the running for adjudication-based awards.

4

SCORING RUBRIC

On a scale of 1-4 (with 4 being the highest score and 1 being the lowest score), adjudicators use the scoring rubric below to rank how well the evaluation criteria are executed by students. Once the final high school musical theatre production has been evaluated, adjudicators will meet in a roundtable setting to review the final scores and determine winners in each award category.

OUTSTANDING (4) • Performance far exceeds expectations for high school students • All areas outlined in the Evaluation Criteria are expertly executed • A superior level of artistic excellence is demonstrated overall

ABOVE AVERAGE (3) • Performance exceeds expectations for high school students • All areas outlined in the Evaluation Criteria are skillfully executed • A high level of artistic excellence is demonstrated overall

AVERAGE (2) • Performance meets expectations for high school students • Most areas outlined in the Evaluation Criteria are acceptably executed • More strengths than weaknesses overall

BELOW AVERAGE (1) • Performance does not meet expectations for high school students • Some areas outlined in the Evaluation Criteria are acceptably executed • More weaknesses then strengths overall

2018 Outstanding Musical Theater Production ()

5

Evaluation Criteria Adjudicators will evaluate how well the following components were executed for the middle school or high school level to determine scores in each category:

Singing & Voice • Accuracy: pitch, rhythm, intonation • Tone: quality, resonance, projection • Technique: dynamics, breath support, posture, placement, phrasing • Diction: articulation, vowel shapes, appropriate use of consonants

Acting • Believability: relationships with other characters, consistency, motivation • Voice & Diction: projection, volume, intelligibility, articulation, maintenance of dialect (if applicable) • Energy & Presence: animation, stage presence, confidence, professionalism • Interpretation: character goals/objectives, physical and vocal choices, character development

Movement & Dance • Staging: preparedness, natural integration of blocking, motivation, entrances/exits • Choreography: footwork, body position, quality of movement, energy, precision, rhythm/tempo • Characterization: facial expressions, gestures, focus

Overall Performance • Story: communication of major ideas, themes and emotions to audience • Combined theatrical elements: quality of acting, dance/movement, singing • Professionalism: teamwork, preparedness, commitment

Confidentiality Feedback and scoring will be submitted through a secure online form. Please note that adjudicators will not provide oral critiques following the performance, nor should schools expect to receive scores. Adjudicators must not discuss their opinions, evaluations, scores, or feedback with anyone in any format. This includes, but is not limited to: faculty, staff, and students from participating high schools, other adjudicators, colleagues, reviewers, social media networks, etc. Please do not contact adjudicators with questions – all inquiries should be directed to OPA staff.

Production Videos It is highly recommended (though not required) that schools wishing to receive feedback and scores submit an archival video of their high school musicals to Omaha Performing Arts before the adjudication period closes. If necessary, videos will be viewed by the adjudication panel as a tiebreaker tool when determining winners in each award category.

Policy for Students Performing in Multiple Groups We recognize that some students may be eligible to perform in more than one of the groups listed above. Students may perform with more than one group, but because of overlaps between rehearsals some restrictions apply. Here is a list of allowed overlaps between performance groups: • Outstanding production number + Showcase Ensemble • Outstanding production number + National Finalist • National Finalist + Lead Medley • Outstanding Production number + Lead Medley • Outstanding Production number + National Finalist + Lead Medley • Students who are performing in the Showcase Ensemble cannot perform in the Lead Medley or National Finalist Groups and vice versa

Creative Team & Key Personnel The NHSTA Showcase gives students the chance to work with a variety of performing arts professionals and perform at a world-class venue. OPA has hired a professional pit band to play for the performance and a Broadway Choreographer and Music Director. In addition, OPA has an in-house team of union personnel, including a Production Manager, Stage Manager, Lighting Designer, Audio Engineers, and Stage Hands working to produce this show.

Music Within a week after schools have been adjudicated for the consideration of an Outstanding Musical Theatre Production award, they will need to select and submit piano/vocal scores for their top three song choices to perform at the Showcase. If applicable, schools will also need to provide a list of soloists at this time. We need to begin arranging music and setting microphone plots as soon as possible so it is vital that we collect this information from schools in a timely manner. OPA has already secured agreements with licensing houses and representatives for ALL participants to ensure that schools are not responsible for any additional fees associated with the Showcase.

Application Guidelines: National Finalists & Nominees

We're proud to participate in the Broadway League’s National High School Musical Theatre Awards for a 6th year! Two outstanding student performers (one lead actor and one lead actress) will be nominated to join top students from across the country for a week of private coaching with NYU Tisch faculty, master classes with Broadway professionals and rehearsals in preparation for The Jimmy® Awards Showcase at the Minskoff Theater on Broadway. National nominees are determined through an application and audition process.

Eligibility High school students in grades 9-12 playing qualified lead roles in their adjudicated 2018/2019 NHSTA musicals are eligible to apply. Qualified lead roles are determined by the Jimmy Awards. The list of qualified lead roles is available here: JimmyAwards.com/Qualifying-Shows-and-Roles/. If you cannot find your role on the list, please contact OPA staff and we will submit an appeal on your behalf.

How to Apply Eligible students should apply online at OmahaPerformingArts.org/Nebraska-High-School-Theater-Academy. Applications will be accepted starting in late-January 2019. The deadline for applications is Friday, March 29, 2019. To complete the application, please be prepared to submit the following items: • 1-page resume • Headshot photo • Audition video #1: perform a solo (32-bar cut) from the qualified lead role you played in your adjudicated 2018/2019 high school musical • Audition video #2: perform a solo (32-bar cut) of a musical theater ballad OR musical theater up-tempo piece of your choice • Music: attach the piano/vocal score for the full song (not just the 32-bar cut) featured in video #1 Please note – videos should showcase your audition abilities. Do NOT submit video from a fully staged or costumed production.

Callback Audition A limited number of applicants will be invited to attend a live callback audition at the Holland Center on Saturday, April 13, 2019. The callback will include a dance call, where students will learn a short piece of choreography to perform for the audition panel. Students will also be asked to perform the 2 songs submitted as a part of their video application. OPA will hire a professional accompanist. Pease bring 2 hardcopies of your sheet music with cuts clearly marked, 3 copies of your resume, and 3 copies of your headshot. Each student will be assigned a callback time. Details will be provided in early-April 2019.

National Finalists The callback audition panel will select up to 14 finalists (7 actors and 7 actresses) to perform solos from their qualified lead roles in a special medley at the Nebraska High School Theater Academy Showcase on Friday, June 7, 2019 at 7:30pm the Orpheum Theater. Finalists should be available to attend showcase rehearsals in Omaha starting Monday, June 3, 2019 and must be available to perform at the showcase. National Finalists will be provided with free housing at Creighton University, meals, and transportation to/from dorms and rehearsal sites during the week. Finalists will be announced in late-April 2019.

Nominees From the group of National Finalists, 2 outstanding student performers (1 actor and 1 actress) will be selected to represent Nebraska in New York City. Nominees will be announced live onstage at NHSTA Showcase. Nominees must be available to travel to NYC in late-June 2019. All travel, accommodation and food costs will be paid for by Omaha Performing Arts.

25

Application Guidelines: National Student Reporter

The National High School Musical Theatre Awards is seeking two Student Reporters from around the country to travel to NYC to cover the 2019 Jimmy Awards on social media on both the official Jimmy Awards channels and the student reporters' personal channels. One outstanding high school student at a participating NHSTA school will be nominated to represent Nebraska in the national competition in late-June 2019. The NHSTA nominee should be available to attend the Nebraska High School Theater Academy Showcase at 7:30pm on Friday, June 7, 2019 at the Orpheum Theater where they will cover NHSTA social media/conduct interviews on the red carpet and accept a trophy onstage. The nominee should also plan on attending dress rehearsal starting at 1:00pm that day – complimentary tickets and reserved seating will be provided. Visit JimmyAwards.com/Student-Reporter-Search/ for more information.

Eligibility High school students in grades 9-12 at participating NHSTA schools are eligible, but applicants must not be students who are competing to participate as a nominee in the Jimmy Awards (e.g. must not be a National Finalist).

How to Apply To be considered, students should create a video up to 3 minutes in length showing or describing how they would uniquely cover the Jimmy Awards on social media, as well as promoting tuning in to a live stream of the Jimmy Awards ceremony. The videos should be minimally edited and should include at least one unedited segment of at least one minute in length with the applicant speaking directly to camera (alone or with interview subjects). The videos must not include any performance footage; the content of the videos is otherwise up to the applicant. We want to see your personality shine in this video! Think of it as hosting a version of "MTV Cribs" or an audition video to be on a non-performance reality show. Your video should be entertaining while educating your followers about the Jimmy Awards. Email [email protected] a YouTube link of your video, along with your full name, high school name, and contact information by Friday, April 5, 2019. NHSTA may only submit one applicant for consideration. NHSTA will notify applicants of their status in mid-April.

Finalists The 10 top applicants from across the nation will be selected to move on to the second round and have their videos uploaded on the Jimmy Awards’ Facebook page, or similar online social media platform. The Jimmy Awards selection panel will be assessing the content of the submission and the reach and engagement of the video, as well as the applicant’s poise, professionalism and camera presence. The Jimmy Awards will announce the top 10 applicants in early-May 2019. The top 10 applicants’ videos will be posted on the Jimmy Awards Facebook page for approx. 1 month. During this time the Jimmy Awards will use video analytics to determine the popularity and overall reach of the video. These metrics will be taken into consideration when selecting winners.

Winners The top 2 student reporters nationwide will be selected and notified in early-June 2019. Winners should be available to travel to NYC in late-June 2019. All travel, lodging, meals and related expenses will be covered by the Jimmy Awards and Omaha Performing Arts.
