RECLAIMING THE EPISTEMOLOGICAL "OTHER": NARRATIVE AND THE SOCIAL CONSTITUTION OF IDENTITY "A Word on Categories" As I write, my editor at Harvard University Press is waging something of a struggle with the people at the Library of Congress about how this book is to be categorized for cataloging purposes. The librarians think "Afro- Americans--Civil Rights" and "Law Teachers" would be nice. I told my editor to hold out for "Autobiography," "Fiction," "Gender Studies," and "Medieval Medicine." This battle seems appropriate enough since the book is not exclusively about race or law but also about boundary. While being black has been the powerful social attribution in my life, it is only one of a number of governing narratives or presiding fictions by which I am constantly reconfiguring myself in the world. -

A fitting finale to our 60th anniversary celebrations was the June 13, 2010, symposium in Taipei, “Taiwan in the Twenty-first Century: Politics, Economy and Society.” This symposium continued WEAI’s outreach programs in East Asia to local Columbia alumni and to all prior visiting scholars, professional fellows, or participants at WEAI. The first three symposia were held in Beijing, Tokyo, and Seoul during May and June of 2009, and planning is now under way for a May 2011 sym- posium to take place in Hong Kong. As with the earlier events, the Taipei symposium involved close cooperation with the Columbia Alumni Association. The local signifi- cance of the symposium was underscored by the keynote speaker, Vincent Siew, vice president of the Republic of China (Taiwan), and by the meeting on the following day of symposium panelists and speakers with ROC President Ma Ying-jeou. -
Strategic Leadership in the Business School
Strategic Leadership in the Business School Business schools have come under fi re in recent years, with criticisms centring on their academic rigour and the relevance of business education to the ‘real’ world of management. Alongside this ongoing debate, increasing international competition and media rankings have led to a fi erce struggle between business schools for positioning and differentiation. These are among the challenges that are faced by the dean of the modern-day business school. In this book, Fernando Fragueiro and Howard Thomas show how deans of business schools can meet such challenges in terms of strategic direction setting and the execution of their leadership role. Drawing on their invaluable experience as deans of highly successful business schools, they present a series of case studies to show how leaders of fi ve major business schools (IMD, LBS, INSEAD, IAE and Warwick) have built effective strategies in the context of internal and external political pressures. fernando fragueiro is Professor of General Management and Director of ENOVA Thinking, a centre for developing corporate leadership in emerging markets, at IAE Business School in Buenos Aires. He served previously as Dean of IAE Business School (1995–2008) and as Vice-President of Austral University (1995–2007). howard thomas is Dean and LKCSB Chair in Strategic Management at the Lee Kong Chian School of Business, Singapore Management University. Until recently he was Dean of Warwick Business School (2000–2010), and, prior to this, he was Dean of the College of Commerce and Business Administration at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (1991–2000). -

While over 3,500 students of color entered school with the guidance of Early Steps, it is humbling to know that the impact has been so much greater. Doors where academic excellence is the norm and children learn and play with others whose life’s experiences are not the same as theirs, benefitting all children. Knight Commission on Trust, Media and Democracy Stanford University, January 16, 2018 Richard Adler The Knight Commission on Trust, Media and Democracy held its second regular meeting at the Stanford Alumni Center on Tuesday, January 16th. On the evening of the 15th, the Commissioners gathered in Palo Alto for dinner and to hear a presentation on advancements in technology for creating and editing video content. The morning of the 16th was devoted to two panels of experts on media and technology, and the afternoon was devoted to two additional presentations, from Facebook and Gallup, and Commission deliberations. This is our rapporteur, Richard Adler’s, summary of the session. The public sessions of Tuesday, January 16, are available for viewing online: Session 1 and Session 2). Monday evening, January 15th Presentation by Maneesh Agrawala, Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Brown Institute for Media Innovation, Stanford University Professor Agrawala has developed techniques to simplify and speed up editing of video interviews by providing a “transcript tool” that automatically generates text of an interviewee’s comments synched to video content. Tools now exist to edit video interviews by creating seamless transitions and adding pauses to disguise edits. A team at the University of Washington has created a tool that can take existing audio material and create synthetic but highly realistic new video of a subject speaking the words. [Synthesizing Obama: Learning Lip Sync from Audio]. Software developed at Princeton University makes it possible to edit audio material much like text: creating and inserting new words into an audio transcript [Technology edits voices like text]. -
