'Streets of London' 50 Years On: Ralph Mctell, Crisis Choir and Guest ‘Streets of London’ 50 years on: Ralph McTell, Crisis Choir and guest vocalist Annie Lennox re-release iconic hit in time for Christmas Single released 4 December to raise money for homelessness as charity turns 50 To download the track for 99p click here: smarturl.it/streetsoflondon Watch video HERE https://youtu.be/q4OV54nb_Kw Legendary singer-songwriter, Ralph McTell, has re-recorded his timeless song, ‘Streets of London’, with a choir made up of clients from Crisis – the national charity for homeless people – and guest vocalist Annie Lennox, to raise money for the cause in the run up to Christmas. First penned 50 years ago, the classic single shares its birthday with Crisis, whose 50th anniversary also falls this December. To mark the occasion, Crisis’ homeless clients and staff from across the country came together to form an 88-strong choir to sing alongside McTell and guest vocalist Lennox. The choir was conducted by Only Men Aloud’s Tim Rhys-Evans, while the recording also features Fairport Convention’s Richard Thompson on guitar. One of the most recorded songs of all time, ‘Streets of London’ has been covered by over 200 artists including Cat Stevens and Glen Campbell. The song has long been associated with homelessness, with its lyrics speaking of lonely figures walking through Surrey Street Market in Croydon, where Crisis now has a centre. The latest version is an emotional gem, featuring lush orchestration and soaring choral harmonies alongside McTell’s trademark baritone. The single is being released to raise money for Crisis and help support some of the thousands of people facing homelessness this Christmas, many of whom will have nowhere to turn as the winter months close in. Introduction When Pink Floyd’s original guitarist/songwriter Syd Barrett died in July 2006, the BBC News website featured a quote by British singer David Bowie, “He was the first guy I’d heard to sing pop or rock with a British accent – his impact on my thinking was enormous”. Indeed, as we shall see, the two 1967 singles “See Emily Play” and “Arnold Layne”, which represented the Pink Floyd’s entry into the musical mainstream, show un- mistakably just how British Barrett’s vocals sound. Bowie’s admiration for Barrett’s adoption of “a British accent” and the fact that this should be noteworthy can be explained in terms of a phe- nomenon that is typical for British popular music. 1 At the time relatively few singers of note used a British singing style consistently, the best known – and exceptional – exponents being former actor Anthony Newly, who focussed mainly on chanson- or music-hall-oriented material, and Jake Thackray, the “founding father of English chanson” (Clayson 2002). By contrast, ever since the Jazz era, but particularly from the 1950s onwards, British singers have modelled their singing style on what they perceived to be an American pronunciation, a tendency that continues to the present time. This is true for Jazz singers, Skiffle groups, Rock’n’Roll, R’n’B or Hard Rock bands as well as doowop pop and soul vocalists to the extent that this style represents a standard style, a norm that seems to permeate even the material of musicians who as of the mid-Sixties have begun to adopt singing styles other than American ones.
