Linda LIN Dai 林黛（1934.12.26–1964.7.17） Actress Lin was born in Binyang, Guangxi with the original name Cheng Yueru. She spent her childhood in Guilin, Chongqing and Nanjing. Her father, Cheng Siyuan, was a famous politician. She moved to Hong Kong in 1948 and joined The Great Wall Movie Enterprises Ltd in 1950. However, she was unable to show her talent because of her father’s political background. Lin joined Yung Hwa Motion Picture Industries Ltd in 1952 and shot to stardom with Singing Under the Moon (1953), starting her 11-year career in the film industry. She starred in some 50 films for Yung Hwa, Cathay, MP & GI and Shaws. Lin won her first Best Actress award at the 4th Asian Film Festival in 1957 with MP & GI’s Golden Lotus. Her other prominent works for MP & GI include The Battle of Love (1957), The Valley of the Lost Soul (1957), Scarlet Doll (1958), Cinderella and Her Little Angels (1959), Lady on the Roof (1959, produced by Jinquan) and Bachelors Beware (1960). Lin later bagged Best Actress with Diau Charn (1958), Les Belles (1961) and Love Without End (1961), all Shaws productions, respectively at the 5th, 8th and 9th Asian Film Festival. Apart from the aforementioned titles, The Kingdom and the Beauty (1959) and Love Parade (1963) also enjoyed great popularity. She married tycoon Lung Shing-fan at the age of 26 but committed suicide before her 30th birthday, leaving behind a son and two unfinished films, The Lotus Lamp (1964) and The Blue and The Black (in two parts, 1966). .

The documentary series, which incorporates three interrelated subjects – Classic Beauty: Le Di, Scenic Writing Director: Li Han Hsiang and Brother Lian: Ling Po – explores the remarkable film careers of each figure while discussing the social and cultural context in which they worked.

In comparison to cinema in China, Hong Kong enjoyed a greater degree of political expression. The Hong Kong cinema industry produced a greater variety of Chinese-language films, without having to suffer from the constraints imposed by government censorship. For decades, Hong Kong reported to be the third largest motion picture industry in the world, after Bollywood and Hollywood, and the second largest exporter. However, Hong Kong cinema did not attract scholarly attentions until the mid-1980s. The HKFA is the first research-based institution to be established for documenting the history and evolution of the region's cinema. An Encounter with HK Films Never Shown in HK Hong Kong Filmography IV (1953-1959), in separate Chinese and English versions, will be published before the end of this year. Film archiving has its way of bringing surprises, big or small, especially when different thematic projects give one the perfect excuse to indulge oneself in different terrains. Seeing the close tie formed between the Hong Kong film industry and its overseas market in Southeast Asia, the research work on the Hong Kong Filmography series has long crossed over to the Chinese press in Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. Volume IV contains Amoy and Chaozhou-dialects films made for Southeast Asian market which have never been released in Hong Kong. The missing information, therefore, has to be filled solely with these overseas Chinese papers. To say the whole process is nerve-racking is probably an understatement. Imagine the intricacy to distinguish the same film released under a different title, or an apparent Chaozhou-dialect film turns out to be the Jekyll and Hyde of an old Cantonese film, camouflaged by dubbing... Deducting the re-releases and you have a list of Chaozhou, Amoy and Mandarin films which somehow never made it to the local cinemas... The original name arose because the mountain roads were steep and villagers had to scramble up steep hillsides to get to the surrounding areas. The name was later changed to Kau Wah Keng or “Ninth Shining Path” (九華徑) as villagers thought the name was vulgar and also likened the villagers to dogs.
