The hotel scene in the French capital is continually being updated as new establishments open and existing hotels are renovated and refurbished to meet the expectations and needs of visitors. A trend-setting city, a city of culture, history and dreams, the French capital has accommodation to offer everyone their ideal stay in Paris. With more than 2,029 approved hotels in Greater Paris, i.e. more than 118,000 rooms, as well as more than 154 aparthotels, 4 campsites and 56 youth accommodation centres, Paris can boast one of the biggest accommodation capacities in Europe. NEW PLACES: DYNAMIC AND CREATIVE PARIS! New districts to explore, interiors reflecting the latest French design and lifestyle trends, comfort and well-being, excellent service, and cultural interest: Paris hotels have much to offer, and undertake creative makeovers to give visitors the exceptional experience they are seeking. ACCOMMODATION Revamped hotels offer great stays in Paris, with enhanced comfort and fabulous decor. Here is a selection. Place de la Concorde without the Hôtel de Crillon was a bit like the Eiffel Tower with the lights switched off. After being closed for renovation for a number of years, the legendary luxury hotel finally unveiled its new look in 2017. The refurbishment has reduced the number of rooms from 147 to 124 (including 46 suites) to offer guests far PARIS more space. The opulence and elegance of the interiors have, however, been maintained. In the common areas, heritage features such as chandeliers, tapestries and mouldings are skilfully juxtaposed with original works of contemporary art and black and white photographs. Behind the scenes, 375 members of staff are committed to fulfilling the wishes of this sumptuous palace hotel’s international clientele. A short distance from here, on the Champs-Elysées, Jacques Garcia has given the renowned Hôtel Barrière Le Fouquet’s a makeover. The sophisticated interior decorator has updated all 81 guest rooms and suites as well as the spa. The legendary brasserie – which enjoys listed status – has also had a facelift. The redesign also provided an opportunity for expansion into the floor above the restaurant, formerly occupied by offices. Another new feature is the ‘Day Suite' concept. Some of the most beautiful suites at Le Fouquet’s are now available for hire for a few hours, to host a stylish private or corporate event. The Hôtel Whistler in the vicinity of the Gare du Nord evokes the atmosphere of a Wes Anderson film. The new interiors at this 4-star pay a nostalgic tribute to the golden age of rail travel. Interior decorator Sandrine Alouf has woven many details reminiscent of legendary belle époque trains into the hotel’s 31 guest rooms and lobby, making ample use of leather and wood. There are luggage racks in copper above the beds, and the wardrobes and writing desks resemble vintage travelling trunks. The breakfast room is, of course, decorated in the style of the classic dining car. In the 9th, Groupe Maranatha has taken over and renovated the beautiful Hotel Villa Lafayette, a discreet and quintessentially Parisian address in the style of a Haussmannian apartment, with parquet flooring, subtle decor in shades of grey, designer chairs, and black and white rugs. The Mercure Group also opted for a predominance of grey for its redesign of the Mercure Paris Opéra Grands Boulevards. Turquoise walls and touches of whimsy enliven the grey background, like the towering hats used as hanging lamps. Drawings of 1960s stars of the jazz era in Paris, like Sidney Bechet and Sacha Distel, adorn the ceilings. Another hotel has also drawn inspiration from a music-influenced era. The Hôtel Eiffel Blomet pays homage to the Roaring Twenties, when night owls danced the Charleston 2 → Press file 2018 – Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau and enjoyed live jazz at the Bal Nègre. This iconic 1920s cabaret is located right next door and, like the hotel, it reopened in 2017 after a lengthy and extensive makeover. Paris is truly a moving feast! Scattered throughout the capital, they enable visitors to experience Paris in all its newness and originality. In the news PARIS Several ultra-modern and trendy hotels opened in Paris in 2017. One of the most talked-about and admired openings was the Hôtel National des Arts et Métiers near the museum of the same name in the lively district around the Sentier, the Haut-Marais and République. The stripped-back interiors by designer Raphaël Navot, boldly mixing industrial elements (concrete; granite; rusted pipes) with natural materials (ferns; burnt wood), elicited lavish praise from all the interior design glossies. The hotel’s two Italian restaurants (one of them is a cicchetteria serving Venetian tapas) have already built up a faithful clientele. The new Hotel Parister is also a hit with Parisian foodies tempted by its cocktail bar and tapas bar. This 45-room 5-star located near the Folies Bergère has contemporary architecture with retro touches. It is a stylish and sport-oriented establishment: guests can make use of a 20-metre indoor swimming pool and do yoga, Pilates or cross training with resident instructors. Meanwhile, Dorothée Meilichzon has once again proved to be the go-to designer for cutting-edge concepts. The latest example of her work is the Hôtel des Grands Boulevards, the new addition to the Experimental Group stable. Set well back from the bustle of the street, the hotel offers 50 guest rooms with decor incorporating subtle nods to the 19th century, like canopy beds and the use of pink marble. Other draws: an Italian restaurant, a cocktail bar and a greenery-filled rooftop terrace. A similar aesthetic can be admired at L'Hôtel Bienvenue, the very latest establishment from the newsworthy young hotelier Adrien Gloaguen. Here, too, marble and wildflower arrangements blend very naturally with distinctly modern lamps and headboards. But it is the charming terrace garden and restaurant that have put this address on the shortlist of out-of-towners and locals alike. Hotels that feel like home An increasing number of hotels are seeking to provide guests with the intimate atmosphere of a private home. One example of this trend is the ‘luxury family home’ concept at the Splendide Royal. This 5-star with only 12 suites is housed in an elegant private mansion on a street behind the Elysée Palace. Formerly the home of the couturier Pierre Cardin, it is now the property of the Italian family-owned Roberto Naldi Collection. Guests – referred to as ‘residents’ – receive a highly personalized welcome, and each suite even features its own private wine cellar. 3 → Press file 2018 – Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau A similar place-like-home vibe can be experienced at the new OKKO Hôtel Paris Porte de Versailles, in line with the philosophy of Olivier Devys, the founder of this recent French ‘all-inclusive 4-star’ concept. Guests are encouraged to kick back in the lounge/kitchen/bar area, known as 'Le Club', just as they would in their own homes. For its maiden property in Paris, the brand called on the architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte and the interior designer Patrick Norguet. They are behind the welcoming atmosphere in this striking, light-flooded building with 149 rooms. Two more OKKO hotels in Paris are scheduled to open in the new future: one in the vicinity of Gare Montparnasse in 2018 and one near Gare de l'Est in 2019. Singular style Another hotel with very contemporary design is the Drawing Hôtel near the Palais Royal in the 1st arrondissement. Six artists were given carte blanche to design the building’s five floors and transform them into works of art, each with a different ethos. This boutique hotel also houses an art space with a focus on contemporary drawing, known as the Drawing Lab; a cocktail bar-cum-tea room, and an art concierge, who advises guests about current exhibitions and art trails in the city. ACCOMMODATION The brand-new Tsuba Hotel is an elegant art deco townhouse, with decor incorporating references to the ‘tsuba’ – the sword guard traditionally used by Japanese samurai. This sophisticated 4-star hotel a stone’s throw from the Arc de Triomphe is as sharp and pared-down in style as the weapon for which it is named. In contrast, the cosy bar hosts after-work jazz sessions and other musical entertainment to enjoy while sipping a drink. In the Bastille area, a short distance from the Marais, the designer Juan Alvarez has PARIS transformed a former dye house into a 53-room 5-star (the first one in the 11th arrondissement): the Maison Bréguet. Near Gare Saint-Lazare, LAZ' Hôtel Spa Urbain, a 4-star boutique hotel, has industrial loft-style design that gives the 56 rooms a feel of bohemian luxury.
