Bishop Stephen Gill Spottswood (July 18, 1897-December 2, 1974) THE APOSTLES’ CREED Bishop Stephen Gill Spottoswood was a religious leader and civil rights activist known for his work in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion and chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People I BELIEVE IN GOD, THE FATHER ALMIGHTY, (NAACP). Born in Boston, Massachusetts, the only child to Mary Elizabeth and Abraham Lincoln Spottoswood on July MAKER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH; 18, 1897. He attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, in Maine. He went to Albright College, earning a B.A> in AND IN JESUS CHRIST HIS ONLY SON, OUR LORD; history in 1917; Gordon Divinity School and Yale Divinity School, where he earned his doctorate. WHO WAS CONCEIVED BY THE HOLY GHOST. He served at in leadership positions around the country at Lowell, Mass. He founded the First AMEZ Church BORN OF THE VIRGIN MARY; in Lowell, Mass, Green Memorial AMEZ in Portland, Maine, Varick Memorial AMEZ in New Haven, CT Goler Memorial SUFFERED UNDER PONTIUS PILATE; AMEZ in Winston-Salem, NC Jones Tabernacle, in Indianapolis, IN, St Luke in Buffalo, NY and John Wesley AMEZ in WAS CRUCIFIED, DEAD, AND BURIED; Washington, DC. While here in Washington, DC he was elected in 1952 the 58th bishop of our great AMEZ Church. THE THIRD DAY HE ROSE FROM THE DEAD; He participated in many public protest, sit-ins, boycotts, and pickets, believing that those activities which HE ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN, had economic impact were among the most effective for bringing about change for the Black people.

(PAL) to complete a Statewide Survey and National Register Evaluation of sites relating to the Twentieth-Century African American Civil Rights Movement in Rhode Island. This project was Phase 2 of a three-phase project funded by the National Park Service’s African American Civil Rights Grant Program; Phase 1 was completed by RIBHS researchers in July 2018. This Survey Report for Phase 2 includes a methodology statement, a historical context statement, a summary of surveyed sites, and a bibliography.
