Chris Herald knocked the cover off the ball today going 3 for 4, 2 doubles, 1 walk, and 3 RBI’s (still had a little power shortage, hitting one double 267 ½ feet with a 269 feet fence). Pic please! Action! Outlaws action! And the Eagles soared – literally and figuratively (ok, so it’s not an actual eagle!)… Their pitchers dominated… The fielders got everything… …and then the pitcher started the famed reverse walk-off Triple Play! Team Game Summaries Game reports by the managers. Photos are courtesy of “The Commish” or the managers. Outlaws (19+) What a beautiful day for baseball!! With a special appearance from guest cheerleader/heckler Greg Budnik, the Outlaws lineup carried over the thunder from the Saturday night storms and hit their way to 16-2 victory against the Biscuits. Luke T went 2-2 with 3 RBI to lead a lineup that featured 6 batters with multiple RBI performances. Starting pitcher Matt W continued his dominance on the mound with 3 more shutout innings which makes it 8 straight shutout innings to start the season. The Outlaws also showed that they have plenty of other pitching options to lock a game down using a total of 6 pitchers while only giving up 2 runs. The Outlaws are off to a hot start and look to continue that trend next weekend when they take on last year’s 2nd place team, the Senators. Hurricanes (19+) Ugh, no report – we got crushed! Redlegs (30+) The new Redleg magic did not continue, as the impressive Eagles played nearly flawless ball to take down the fledgling team! Every time the ‘Legs bats started something, the Eagles had the answer…first and third, nobody out? No prob for the Eagles! Trick throw to SS instead of second from the catcher to nail the cheating 3rd base runner! First and second no outs? No prob! Eagles roll a reverse walk-off triple play to end the game! And the Redlegs could only muster 6 hits against the strong pitching of the Eagles…they included Cortese (2), Huntley, Corn, Casey and Weldon. The ‘Legs will have to develop a better game plan for next time! Nationals (30+) The Nationals continued the season with another win in the books. After the rusty opening week, the Nat’s must have spent more time in the batting cages this week, because the bats were hot this week. Every National reached base during the 18-5 win over the Expos, who were short on pitching. The Nationals had several bright spots in the batting order this week, including Robert Goad, Tom Blazek, Mike DeMarr, and Al Torres each getting two hits. Rich Goad and Chris Herald each added three hits, which included 3 doubles (two by Chris). However after busting on Chris Herald for his Week 1 batting average, he wasn’t going to let that happen again, as he knocked the cover off the ball today going 3 for 4, 2 doubles, 1 walk, and 3 RBI’s (still had a little power shortage, hitting one double 267 ½ feet with a 269 feet fence). Chris is our candidate for Legend of the Week, not only for hit nice hitting, but tracking down every ball hit close to centerfield. The Nationals pitching is coming along with team trying different looks on the mound to keep the batters on their toes. The Nat’s used five pitchers, which included Rich Goad, Darnell Washington, Curtis Caram, Tom Blazek, and Al Torres combined giving the Expos 5 runs on 9 hits, 14 BB’s, and 4 K’s. Standouts on the mound included Darnell Washington who pitched 3 shutout innings and Closer Al Torres who came in to record the final out of the ballgame. After the game the Manager Rich Goad was asked about his pitching staff and he said “We pitched good today, however we need to work on not giving the other team free passes to first with Walks”. “Overall this was another team win, with every player making contributions. Every player on the team reached base, which allowed 10 of the 11 players to knock in at least one RBI, with 5 players knocking in multiple”, stated manager Rich Goad. Brewers (30+) BREWERS - ERRORS 12 RUNS 8 The Brewers Manager, had the no press sign on the locker room, and a lot of cuss word were heard, the only bright spot for the team was the five run inning, thanks to 376' home run from Brian Hudson. It’s been close to two hours now and the locker room door has been locked, and the cuss words are still flying…so this reporter is taking the hint, and going home. Eagles (30+) The Eagles played the new look Redlegs Sunday at Madison HS and pulled out a 10-4 win behind some clutch hits, sharp pitching and good defense. It was a truly great day for baseball. Both teams came ready to play coming off opening day wins. The Eagles were lead by Leo FitzHarris who was 3-5 with 5 RBI. David Hays also continued his early season tear on the league going 3-4 at the plate and pitching 4 innings with 1 earned run and 3 K's. New Eagle Bryan Nelms has quietly sparked the lineup this season with a .500 BA and 3 stolen bases. The game ended on a walk off triple play by the Eagles started by a diving play of a pop up off the mound by FitzHarris who then promptly threw to first base and 2nd base to end the game. The league statisticians have conferred and agreed this is the first in league history! Pirates (30+) The Pirates rebounded from a nail-biting loss last week to the Redlegs by putting on a batting clinic against the Isotopes. 12 out of 13 Pirates registered atleast one hit and ALL 13 players crossed the plate on the day. The Pirates hope to carry over the all-around good play next week against the Defending Champ Padres. BlackSox (30+) It was a homerun derby! Generals (30+) The Generals jumped out to an early lead on the Brewers and captured a 14-7 victory on Sunday morning at a damp Veterans Park. With six runs in the first three innings, the Generals left no doubt about the eventual outcome. An RBI single by Jeff Hayes and a Brewers error during the first inning and a fielder's choice, another Brewers error, and an RBI single by Mike Jensik in the second inning helped the Generals put some runs on the board early. Generals' Jensik was perfect at the dish, going 5-5. The Generals easily handled the Brewers pitching as seven hitters combined for 22 hits, 10 RBIs and 14 runs scored. Five separate Generals doubled, including Jensik (2), Hayes, Marietta, David Kooritzky, and Allen. The Generals got two-run rallies in the fifth inning and the seventh. In the fifth, a two-run double by Marietta, scored Kooritzky and rookie Chris Mackay. Sean Marietta got the win for the Generals. He allowed only one run over four innings. Jensik got the hold, going four innings on the mound, including two scoreless frames. James Allen closed out the 9th, facing the minimum three hitters. Behind the plate, Jeff Eanes threw out two base runners. Altogether the Generals recorded no errors, the first such feat in the franchises long and storied history.     Guide to Softball Rules and Basics History Softball was created by George Hancock in Chicago in 1887. The game originated as an indoor variation of baseball and was eventually converted to an outdoor game. The popularity of softball has grown considerably, both at the recreational and competitive levels. In fact, not only is women’s fast pitch softball a popular high school and college sport, it was recognized as an Olympic sport in 1996. Object of the Game To score more runs than the opposing team. The team with the most runs at the end of the game wins. Offense & Defense The primary objective of the offense is to score runs and avoid outs. The primary objective of the defense is to prevent runs and create outs. Offensive strategy A run is scored every time a base runner touches all four bases, in the sequence of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and home. To score a run, a batter must hit the ball into play and then run to circle the bases, counterclockwise. On offense, each time a player is at-bat, she attempts to get on base via hit or walk. A hit occurs when she hits the ball into the field of play and reaches 1st base before the defense throws the ball to the base, or gets an extra base (2nd, 3rd, or home) before being tagged out. A walk occurs when the pitcher throws four balls. It is rare that a hitter can round all the bases during her own at-bat; therefore, her strategy is often to get “on base” and advance during the next at-bat.

    A Second Look At The Triple Plays By Chuck Rosciam This analysis updates my original paper published on SABR.org and Retrosheet.org and my Triple Plays sub-website at SABR. The origin of the extensive triple play database1 from which this analysis stems is the SABR Triple Play Project co-chaired by myself and Frank Hamilton with the assistance of dozens of SABR researchers2. Using the original triple play database and updating/validating each play, I used event files and box scores from Retrosheet3 to build a current database containing all of the recorded plays in which three outs were made (1876-2019). In this updated data set 719 triple plays (TP) were identified. [See complete list/table elsewhere on Retrosheet.org under FEATURES and then under NOTEWORTHY EVENTS]. The 719 triple plays covered one-hundred-forty-four seasons. 1890 was the Year of the Triple Play that saw nineteen of them turned. There were none in 1961 and in 1974. On average the number of TP’s is 4.9 per year.
