METAPHYSICS AND THE WORLD CRISIS Victor B. Brezik, CSB (The Basilian Teacher, Vol. VI, No. 2, November, 1961) Several years ago on one of his visits to Toronto, M. Jacques Maritain, when he was informed that I was teaching a course in Metaphysics, turned to me and inquired with an obvious mixture of humor and irony indicated by a twinkle in the eyes: “Are there some students here interested in Metaphysics?” The implication was that he himself was finding fewer and fewer university students with such an interest. The full import of M. Maritain’s question did not dawn upon me until later. In fact, only recently did I examine it in a wider context and realize its bearing upon the present world situation. By a series of causes ranging from Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason in the 18th century and the rise of Positive Science in the 19th century, to the influence of Pragmatism, Logical Positivism and an absorbing preoccupation with technology in the 20th century, devotion to metaphysical studies has steadily waned in our universities. The fact that today so few voices are raised to deplore this trend is indicative of the desuetude into which Metaphysics has fallen. Indeed, a new school of philosophers, having come to regard the study of being as an entirely barren field, has chosen to concern itself with an analysis of the meaning of language. (Volume XXXIV of Proceedings of the American Catholic Philosophical Association deals with Analytical Philosophy.) Yet, paradoxically, while an increasing number of scholars seem to be losing serious interest in metaphysical studies, the world crisis we are experiencing today appears to be basically a crisis in Metaphysics. -

ASIANetwork Exchange | Fall 2014 | volume 22 | 1 Feng Youlan’s Interpretation of Western Philosophy: A Critical Examination from the Perspective of Metaphysical Methodology Derong Chen Abstract: This paper concentrates on Feng’s interpretation of Western philosophy from the perspective of metaphysical methodology and aims to display a limited observation of Feng’s interpretation of Western philosophy through the window of metaphysical methodology. Based on a brief review of the recent studies of Feng Youlan and Western philoso- phy, this paper analyzes the progress and insufficient aspects in current studies on this issue and particularly clarifies what are the metaphysics and metaphysical methods in the context of Feng Youlan’s philosophy. In clarifying Feng’s interpreta- tion of Western philosophy from the perspective of methodology, this paper further critically analyzes Feng’s positive metaphysical methods and negative metaphysical methods, and assumes that Feng’s negative metaphysical methods essentially is a kind of attitude towards metaphysics but neither a kind of metaphysics nor a kind of metaphysical methods. Instead of characterizing metaphysical methods as positive and negative as Feng did, this paper suggests an alternative division of metaphysical methods: direct and indirect methods of dealing with metaphysical issues. Free Will and Rational Coherency
Philosophical Issues, 22, Action Theory, 2012 FREE WILL AND RATIONAL COHERENCY Patricia Greenspan University of Maryland Philosophers often picture undetermined action on the model of Epicurus’s random swerves of atoms. For an agent acting rationally to do otherwise than she actually does would mean swerving away from the course prescribed by her own preferences and values. As Hume famously argued, undetermined action would lack the kind of connection to an agent’s character or motives that we need for ascriptions of moral responsibility. In contemporary terms, whether or not one did the right thing would be a matter of chance or luck. Current authors mainly accept Hume’s point, if not as an argument against indeterminist free will, then as a constraint on the form it can take. Besides contemporary versions of agent-causation, which attempt to make out the agent as a special kind of cause of free action, a strategy exemplified by Robert Kane’s event-causal version of libertarianism takes free action as based on resolving a practical conflict in a way that shapes the agent’s character or motives.1 Doing something else in light of the same reasons would make sense on Kane’s account only where prior deliberation was insufficient to decide the issue. In making a choice the agent would then be deciding to stress certain of her reasons, to weight them more heavily than competing reasons, presumably with implications for future choice as well. For it would seem to be rationally incoherent, an incomprehensible practical swerve, to assign a reason greater weight only on a single occasion, possibly against the results of prior deliberation. -

We will refer to this position as the sufficiency thesis. In recent times however this position has fallen into disfavour. This is largely due to the strong intuition that certain goods other than virtue are necessary for happiness. We will refer to this as the problem of external goods. The point of this paper is to respond to the problem of external goods by articulating an understanding of virtue as involving the ability to occupy a “distanced perspective” within which the virtuous agent becomes detached from external goods insofar as he comes to view them as indifferent. My articulation of this understanding of virtue will be based upon what I take to be the core of the Stoic description of virtue. 2 Declaration I declare that this research report is my own unaided work. Individuality and Rights in Fichte's Ethics
Philosophers’ volume 17, no. 12 Despite sustained and sophisticated philosophical attention in recent Imprint june 2017 years, J.G. Fichte’s 1796–97 Foundations of Natural Right continues to present some of the same interpretive puzzles that it presented to its first readers. Here I propose solutions to two of those puzzles, which concern the nature of political obligation and its relation to moral obli- gation. Both solutions are motivated by a novel approach to the text, which looks at it through the lens of Fichte’s moral philosophy (as pre- sented in the 1798 System of Ethics), into which its results must fit if, as INDIVIDUALITY Fichte believes, the possibility of morally sanctioned interactions with others requires standing in some law-governed political relationship with them. AND RIGHTS IN It is not unusual for interpretive problems that arise when a text is approached in isolation to become soluble when the text is placed against a broader systematic or historical background; and that is the FICHTE'S ETHICS general sort of project I undertake here. The reason this particular ap- proach has not yet been taken with the Foundations has been that no work on Fichte’s ethical theory has, until recently, provided a fruitful point of entry. The interpretation I have defended in work of the past few years,1 on which Fichte’s normative theory is a form of capabilities- maximizing consequentialism, changes the picture, inviting compari- son of Fichte’s treatment of political duties with those of other conse- Michelle Kosch quentialists, and consideration of the role of coordination and agree- ments in consequentialist ethical theory. -

Having given judges the tools to work with, Karst renews the argument for the centrality of the federal judiciary, and particularly the Supreme Court, in remedying the hurt of exclusion. Judicial enforcement of the equal citizenship principle vindicates the central tenets of the American civic culture, invites outsiders into the na tional community, and promotes the national good by assuring that no group is a permanent loser in the political process. As we begin the 1990s, this prescription seems hauntingly sad. A court that could tell Native Americans that their religious prac tices (and everyone else's, for that matter) were the proper subject of political brokering7 is an unlikely candidate for spiritual leader in the quest for constitutional equality. But as Karst himself points out, the strength of the judicial commitment to equality has never been the measure of its pull on American consciousness-else how could Brown v. -

A Comparison and Evaluation of Interpretation: Voegelin and Strauss on Thomas Hobbes Copyright 2002 Jeremy J. Mhire In the beginning of his essay on Thomas Hobbes in What is Political Philosophy, Leo Strauss asks the rather salient question of why we, as students of political philosophy in contemporary times, should read Hobbes?29 [1] The simplicity of this question, to say nothing of its relevance, cannot be overlooked. To study Hobbesian political philosophy is to say that it is relevant to us in some way; it speaks to us precisely because it allows us the ability to understand ourselves more fully. As our self‐ understanding is at least partially informed through the modern perspective, it makes sense to return to the thoughts of one who was influential in creating that perspective. This was certainly the standpoint of both Strauss and Eric Voegelin, two of the most influential political philosophers of the last century. By returning to Hobbes�s thought, both Strauss and Voegelin wished to revive those insights that 29 [1] Leo Strauss, What is Political Philosophy (Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1959), p. 170. played a crucial role in defining how we understand ourselves today. This essay, then, is first and foremost a general attempt to understand the ways in which both Eric Voegelin and Leo Strauss used Hobbes�s political philosophy as a means through which the modern project, or modernity more simply, could be better understood. This will involve an examination of the key themes that both Voegelin and Strauss thought important to properly understand Hobbes�s political philosophy in particular, and its relationship to modernity more generally. -

15 BONNIE KENT Augustine’s ethics Augustine regards ethics as an enquiry into the Summum Bonum: the supreme good, which provides the happiness all human beings seek. In this respect his moral thought comes closer to the eudaimonistic virtue ethics of the classical Western tradition than to the ethics of duty and law associated with Christianity in the modern period. But even though Augustine addresses many of the same problems that pagan philosophers do, he often defends very different answers. For him, happiness consists in the enjoyment of God, a reward granted in the afterlife for virtue in this life. Virtue itself is a gift of God, and founded on love, not on the wisdom prized by philosophers. The art of living In Book 8 of De civitate Dei Augustine describes “moral philosophy” (a Latin expression), or “ethics” (the Greek equivalent), as an enquiry into the supreme good and how we can attain it. The supreme good is that which we seek for its own sake, not as a means to some other end, and which makes us happy. Augustine adds, as if this were an uncontroversial point, that happiness is the aim of philosophy in general.1 Book 19 opens with a similar discussion. In his summary of Varro’s treatise De philosophia, Augustine reports that no school of philosophy deserves to be considered a distinct school unless it differs from others on the supreme good. For the supreme good is that which makes us happy, and the only purpose of philosophizing is the attainment of happiness.2 Both of these discussions cast philosophy as a fundamentally practical discipline, so that ethics appears to overshadow logic, metaphysics, and other comparatively abstract areas as a philosopher’s chief concern. -
