No part of this publication may be reproduced without the written permission of the copyright owner Abstract This study aims to demonstrate the different experiences in the Japanese domestic air transport market compared to those of the intra-EU market as a result of liberalisation along with the Slot allocations from 1997 to 2005 at Haneda (Tokyo international) airport and to identify the constraints for air transport liberalisation in Japan. The main contribution of this study is the identification of the structure of deregulated air transport market during the process of liberalisation using qualitative and quantitative techniques and the provision of an analytical approach to explain the constraints for liberalisation. Moreover, this research is considered original because the results of air transport liberalisation in Japan are verified and confirmed by Structural Equation Modelling, demonstrating the importance of each factor which affects the market. The Tokyo domestic routes were investigated as a major market in Japan in order to analyse the effects of liberalisation of air transport. The Tokyo routes market has seven prominent characteristics as follows: (1) high volume of demand, (2) influence of slots, (3) different features of each market category, (4) relatively low load factors, (5) significant market seasonality, (6) competition with high speed rail, and (7) high fares in the market. -

Kindle Edition. 2 THE ROBO-TOILET REVOLUTION THE ACTRESS AND THE GORILLA The flush toilet is a curious object. It is the default method of excreta disposal in most of the industrialized, technologically advanced world. It was invented either five hundred or two thousand years ago, depending on opinion. Yet in its essential workings, this everyday banal object hasn’t changed much since Sir John Harington, godson of Queen Elizabeth I, thought his godmother might like something that flushed away her excreta, and devised the Ajax, a play on the Elizabethan word jakes, meaning privy. The greatest improvements to date were made in England in the later years of the eighteenth century and the early years of the next by the trio of Alexander Cumming (who invented a valve mechanism), Joseph Bramah (a Yorkshireman who improved on Cumming’s valve and made the best lavatories to be had for the next century), and Thomas Crapper (another Yorkshireman who did not invent the toilet but improved its parts). In engineering terms, the best invention was the siphonic flush, which pulls the water out of the bowl and into the pipe. For the user, the S-bend was the godsend, because the water that rested in the bend created a seal that prevented odor from emerging from the pipe. At the height of Victorian invention, when toilets were their most ornate and decorated with the prettiest pottery, patents for siphonic flushes, for example, were being requested at the rate of two dozen or so a year. -

It considers the suspension of local route op- eration by a monopoly airline that changes the network structure from fully-connected to hub-and-spoke. The main finding is that hub-and-spoke networks are preferable from the standpoint of social welfare when travel demand of local routes is low, when flights are expensive to operate, and when passengers place a high value on flight frequencies. How- ever, when the local travel demand is similar to that of urban routes, the fully-connected systems are chosen by a social planner. Improvement of one airway link can possibly provide a new attractive travel route, such as an air connection route, as well as multi-modal route, including middle distance railway access. The improvement effect of a critical link may be propagated over the nation-wide network, unlimited to the direct neighbor connector of the improved link. How such propagation occurred in Japan between 1995 and 2005 is investigated. K-th shortest path search algorithm is applied to find the available set of routes. Remarkable changes in the Tohoku-Western Japan pairs are detected. This paper further analyzes the effects of the Shinkansen expansion to Hachinohe in 2002 on the service level of the available routes for those OD pairs, proving that there are strong multi-modal propagations on the air links at Sendai airport. -
