Het heeft meer dan een jaar geduurd voordat ik dit onderzoek voltooid heb, maar hier is dan de kroon op mijn studie. Sinds de middelbare school was ik al geïnteresseerd in de propaganda in tekenfilms. Ik heb toen een documentaire gezien, getiteld Ducktators, en was gefascineerd door deze propaganda. Ik was verbaasd dat een vriendelijk medium als de tekenfilm werd ingezet voor propagandadoeleinden. Tijdens mijn studie is het idee om hier iets mee te doen altijd aanwezig geweest. Hier kwam het echter nooit van tot het moment dat ik een onderwerp voor mijn doctoraalscriptie moest bedenken. Propaganda is in mijn opinie nog steeds een zeer relevant onderwerp. Wereldmachten proberen nog steeds zoveel mogelijk mensen aan hun zijde te krijgen en zij maken hiervoor gretig gebruik van de media. Door het bestuderen van een historisch onderwerp wil ik een open kijk op dit fenomeen bieden. De historie kan, doordat het een afgesloten periode betreft, van enige afstand bekeken worden. Door een heldere kijk op het verleden kan vervolgens het heden kritischer bekeken worden. Deze scriptie heeft heel wat voeten in de aarde gehad en voor de hulp hierbij wil ik een aantal mensen bedanken. Mijn dank gaat in eerste instantie uit naar Bert Hogenkamp, die mij geduldig heeft geholpen bij de specificatie van mijn onderwerp en de verdere begeleiding gedurende de hele scriptie.

In the years following the Civil War, the town of Abilene, Kansas is poised on the brink of an explosive confrontation. A line has been drawn down the center of the town where the homesteaders and the cattlemen have come to a very uneasy truce. The delicate peace is inadvertently shattered when a group of new homesteaders lay down their stakes on the cattlemen's side of town, upsetting the delicate balance that had existed thus far and sparking an all-out war between the farmers, who want the land tamed and property lines drawn, and the cowboys, who want the prairies to be open for their cattle to roam. 3.     2 A View of the World Toward a Photographic Theory of Cel Animation The art of photography has been persistently haunted by the image of human labor. —Allan Sekula1 I like to think of each image—whether it contains accidents or not—as a view of the world. They reveal traces of the humans and technology that produced them. —Andrew Norman Wilson2 THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY For most of the twentieth century, to animate was to photograph—and to photo- graph a lot. A theatrical split-reel short produced by an animation studio might involve five to ten thousand separate frames. Like most photographic archives, from microform periodicals to crime galleries to geographical surveys to digitized books, works of cel animation were produced under tightly regulated conditions. Following frame-by-frame instructions enumerated on exposure sheets, camera technicians took picture after picture after picture, and as has been routinely acknowledged, their task was uniquely “tedious,” “mechanical,” “monotonous,” “enervating,” “exact- ing,” and “exhausting.”3 The operator of the animation camera was a “proletarian of creation,” Bernard Edelman’s term for the nineteenth-century photographer who, responsible for “merely deploy[ing] an apparatus,” had no authorial or legal claim to the images he produced.4 He adhered to the sort of “strictly determined routine of distance, camera angle, lighting, and type of lens and apparatus” familiar to police photographers: which cels to add, which to remove, how to position the camera relative to the background, and so on.5 The mechanization of the labor process by which animation’s constitu- tive frames were photographed has led to a curious and perhaps paradoxical 44 A View of the World 45 phenomenon: the complete disavowal of cel animation as photographic cinema.
