He was just an exceptionally supportive person. He did his best in guiding my career. Harris was born in New York and earned a doctoral degree from Rutgers University in 1965. He served in the Army during World War II. After retiring from the UH, he moved to Florida where he spent his time largely working with antique automobiles, Osborne said. “He loved antique automobiles. Lemon “Rusty” Wond Holt used to gather reef surgeonfish, sea urchins, seaweed and soft-flesh coconuts for Queen Liliuokalani when she came to visit his grandmother. One of the last surviving kamaaina members of the “Stonewall Gang” -- youngsters who frequented Waikiki Beach in the early 1900s -- he died March 12, 1999 in St. Francis Hospice, where he had gone as a patient three days before. He was 94. Born Sept. 22, 1904, in the Lemon family's Waikiki home on Kalakaua Avenue across from Kuhio Beach, he recalled Queen Liliuokalani coming to visit his grandmother, Mary Ann Wond Lemon, a classmate of Liliuokalani's at the Royal School. He also knew Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole. Because the boy was a good swimmer, the prince sometimes took him tandem-surfing on his koa longboard. Holt was an avid surfer into his mid-70s, still riding waves at his childhood surfing rounds off Kuhio Beach. Throughout most of the 1960s, he served as manager of the Kamehameha Schools general stores. Holt attended Kamehameha School for Boys when it was located in the present Bishop Museum building. He earned his tuition from the sixth grade on by raising pigs. An athlete at Kamehameha and later at the University of Hawaii, he was on a Kamehameha football team that set a scoring record that still stands, defeating Honolulu Military Academy 104-0. A versatile halfback, he was the mainstay of Otto Klum's champion UH football teams in 1927, 1928 and 1929 and was inducted into the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame in 1979. “There is a lot of sentimentality and illusion about living and fame,” he wrote in 1997. “(But) it's being useful and happy that is really important. William J. "Billy" Hughes donned a diving suit and heavy helmet to work underwater on construction, shipyard and salvage jobs for more than 30 years. The one story his family remembers hearing from him is about the time he searched under a sunken Navy ship in Pearl Harbor and rescued a Navy diver who had been trapped there for three days. "I never felt so happy," Hughes said in a 1997 Star-Bulletin interview. The amazing rescue never made headlines at the time, though. The event known as the West Loch disaster occurred in the midst of World War II and was kept secret for 20 years. It was on May 21, 1944, that a munitions explosion aboard an LST (landing ship-tank) destroyed six ships, killing 163 men and injuring 396. Hughes received Christmas cards for years from the rescued man, whom he knew as "Chief Brown," said his granddaughter, Bonnie McCann. Hughes, 87, died Thursday Sep 2, 1999 in Queen's Hospital. McCann said he kept a boot from his diving suit at his home, and it has amused grandchildren and great- grandchildren. "We all remember trying to lift that boot," she said. "It must weigh 50 pounds." In the 1997 interview, Hughes recalled working on underwater salvage operations after the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. He said he worked on the USS Nevada and the USS Utah, and helped refloat a sunken dry dock. At the time, he said, he was afraid he would be taken off the work force because he was one-quarter Japanese, and his Japanese co-workers were not allowed on base. His career in underwater construction included work on the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington state and at Kwajalein and Johnston islands. He worked for Pacific Bridge Co. and Hawaiian Dredging Co. He and another carpenter built the Kapahulu home where he lived with Clara, his wife of 63 years.
