The p esentrk* isan English translation of the Rasikapriya of'Reshavadasa pu fished in the UNESCO Collection of RepresentativeWorks -- Indian Series. The Rasikapriya, whichwas completed by its author in Samvat `1648 (roughly 1593 A.D.), is a work of contiderableimportance in the riti (a term used as a collective designation fora variety of trends concerning poetic theory) school of the Hindi literary tradition.1Besides the trans- lation of the original text, this book contaling a note.-on 'Whetthe Book is About"' and ft ratherlengthy "Introduction'!" In hiS notepn,"What'the Book is About," the translator describes the Rasikapriya* in thefollowing terms: . ,Keshavadasa we'dte Raiikapriyato provide entertainment to such readers as were interested idthe Roetry of love. Love was considered\t&-bea primarybethotion, not only by the poets of Keshava's time-butalso by those who had preceded him. Rasikapriya deals, with lovein all its varied aspects. The lover, portrayed in Keshava'sbook is Krisna and the b lovedis Radha. In poetic language they are often cayed nayaka-acrd-n.42.ka. The book describes thedifferent kinds of nayakas and nay/ as -- their lovemaking, theirmoods, sentiments and emotions, and illustrates theseby vivid accounts of the lovers in various situations.A This, note ends with the observation that 7The Rasikapriyais a panegyric love and a mine of entertainment. Above all, it isa book of pleasure.", The above-noted desbriptionofthe tcoritentsof the Rasskpri,ya, as well as the translator's concludingremarks about it, are character- istic o'f his viewpo utthis work;and are grosslymisleading. The Rasikapriya is lithe designed to "provide entertainment"'nor meant to be a "book of pl asur ." It'is a work on poetic theorywritten in the style of the laksana-granthagenre of the Hindi riti school.2' It seems to me that the translator, though hehas formed a very valuable service by ' -king a'somewhat inaccessible available in English translat n for thefirst m67-Was also ded to the confusion which alread xists in the histo ies ndi literary tradition regardin: .413f e riti school in gene al a Rasikapriya in particular. This devotional poetry . was in turn based on the North Indian oral tradition of love legends as reflected in a riety of narratives written during the period. There-- fore, for a prop appreciation of the contents of the Rdsikapriya, it is necessary for s to scan through various trends within the North Indian_ oral tradition of ove legends; devotional poetry of the New Indo-Aryan period, and finally the poetry of the rasika genre */se As far as I know, the scholars of the Hindle literary tradition ave ;ever followed ' through these interrelated historica elopments, 'Jai the result that so little is known abOutithem Sec nd, t e work itself is written in the style of the '.a ksaa -gx ntha genre, _st le characteristic of the works of the scholar-poets of'the period. The historians of the Hindi literary .tradition; as well as of er scholars who have done individual studies of the scholar poets of t e riti schoolor those Who have dealt with thid school as a literary trend, have consistentlyfailed-to appreciate thXscholarly traditionsa d academic practices involved in the works---\ belonging to the :aksana-gr ntha genre of the rhi school.     © Wagadu Volume 3: Spring 2006 Symbols of Water and Woman iSymbols of Water and Woman on Selected Examples of Modern Bengali Literature in the Context of Mythological Tradition.* Blanka Knotková-Čapková As in many archaic mythological concepts, the four basic elements are represented in the Indian mythology as either male or female: air (wind) and fire are male principles, later personified as male deities – Agni and Vāyu; earth and water (river) are female. The metaphorization of woman as Water and Earthii has a strong essentialist aspect; it points to the symbol of the womb, the mysterious feminine source of life, the “cradle and grave”iii or “womb and tomb”, “the Great Mother symbolizing circularity of life and death” (cf. Kalnická, in Wilkoszewska 2001, 107), who also disposes with the ultimate power over life and death. As such, she personifies the female creative and dynamic cosmic energy, śakti. Together with her male counterpart (personified as male God Śiva), she represents the dual image of cosmical unity and harmony. In heterodox śaktism, she is worshipped as the ultimate spiritual principle, not dependent on the male principle; in śivaismiv, she is described as the left part of Śiva’s body. Śaktism also worships śakti in the metonymical image of yoni, the female genitals, the location of the sensual pleasure and the beginning of life (the way to / from the womb).v Some of the mythological personifications of śakti have been partially patriarchalized and “married” to the male Gods; a possible pre-Indo-European concept of an independent motherly deity (whose image was connected with the vegetation cycle, eternal recreation and rebirth).

But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being.

    1 BYRON’S POEMS ABOUT POETS Some of the funniest of Byron’s poems spring with seeming spontaneity from his pen in the middle of his letters. Much of this section comes from correspondence, though there is some formal verse. Several pieces are parodies, some one-off squibs, some full-length. Byron’s distaste for most of the poets of his day shines through, with the recurrent and well-worn traditional joke that their books will end either as stuffing in hatshops, wrapped around pastries, or as toilet-tissue. Byron admired the English poets of the past – the Augustans especially – much more than he did any of his contemporaries. Of “the Romantic Movement” he knew no more than did any of the other writers supposed now to have been members of it. Southey he loathed, as a dreadful doppelgänger – see below. Of Wordsworth he also had a low opinion, based largely on The Excursion – to the ambitions of which Don Juan can be regarded as a riposte (there are as many negative comments about Wordsworth in Don Juan as there are about Southey). He was as abusive of Keats as it’s possible to be, and only relented (as he said), when Shelley showed him Hyperion. Of the poetry of his friend Shelley he was very guarded indeed, and compensated by defending Shelley’s moral reputation. Blake he seems not to have known (“Blake” was him the name of a well-known Fleet Street barber). The only poet of whom his judgement and modern estimate coincide is Coleridge: he was strong in his admiration for The Ancient Mariner, Kubla Khan, and Christabel; about the conversational poems he seems blank, and he feigns total incomprehension of the Biographia Literaria (see below).

Why should those who already have such values consider themselves poor? (Mahadevi Verma) Mahadevi believed that a person is always a student in the realm of thought and of feelings. If not, then somewhere he must have closed the door of his heart and mind. She was renowned as a poetess, but in fact, she devoted a lot of time during her life to education and teaching. She had established the Prayag Mahila Vidyapeeth, which she served for as long as she could. Few people know that her devotion to education was a conscious choice as she believed that educational institutions built the nation and some of her great contemporaries have noted that. Sachchidanand Vatsyayan 'Agyeya' drew attention to the fact that according to Mahadevi, her poetry was the reflection of her moments of leisure and 'she would devote the rest of her life to the field of education, where it was required.'2 There are many definitions of 'Vidya' (knowledge/ education) in Indian literature. What Mahadevi liked the most was 'Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktye' – which means 'education is that which liberates'. She noted that in the past, Indian scholars had a very special regard for education and that is why it was always kept under state control. 1. The upper-caste Christian neophytes, often products of the new western education system, took to Christianity to register socio-political dissent. However, given his/her socio-political location, the Christian convert faced a crisis of entitlement: as a convert they faced immediate ostracising from Hindu conservative society, and even as devout western moderns could not partake in the colonizer’s version of selective Christian brotherhood. I argue that Christian convert literature imaginatively uses Hindu mythology as a master-narrative to partake in both these constituencies. This paper turns to the reception aesthetics of an oft forgotten play by Michael Madhusudan Dutt, the father of modern Bengali poetry, to explore the contentious relationship between Christianity and colonial modernity in nineteenth-century Bengal. In particular, Dutt’s deft use of the semantic excess as a result of the overlapping linguistic constituencies of English and Bengali is examined. Further, the paper argues that Dutt consciously situates his text at the crossroads of different receptive constituencies to create what I call ‘layered homogeneities’.

They made it clear that they possessed certain magical secrets of their profession, but they mentioned them evasively. Now and then they made lofty artistic pronouncements, but they showed a more sincere interest in anecdotes about scenarios that were written on a cuff during a gay supper.... There is no dearth of books about Hollywood, but when did any other book come from there that takes such articulate pride in the art that is-or was-made there? I have never understood exactly why the makers of American films felt it necessary to hide their methods and aims under blankets of coyness and anecdotes, the one as impenetrable as the other.
