Junior Hurricanes make history at 2008 International Silver Stick Finals

(Write-Up)

For the first time in the history of Raleigh hockey, a Bantam AA team made the quarterfinals of the prestigious International Silver Stick Finals tournament in Port Huron, Michigan. The Bantam AA Jr. Hurricanes had a stellar run at the 46th annual finals Jan. 10-13th, defeating the 18th-ranked AA team in the nation, the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes, 2 to nothing in round robin play. The Canes jumped out to an early lead when Captain Alex Oury picked up a pass from Meghan Grieves and wrapped the puck around the net and under the goaltender just 4 minutes into the 1st period. The Jr. Canes fought hard the entire game against a quick, skilled Coyotes team, whose coach admitted afterwards that his team got frustrated by their lack of offense because they normally score 4 or 5 goals a game. In the third period, assistant captain Mitchell Eisenberg sealed the victory with an unassisted goal. Netminder Kyle Taylor got the shutout win, and went on to play 82 straight minutes of shutout hockey at the tournament.

In the second game, the Canes, coached by David Laszlo and Greg Cordones, took on Canada’s Kingston Ice Cats. It took only 5 minutes for the Jr. Canes to score with great teamwork on a goal from T.J. Rich to Danny Fredenburg to Thayer Universal, who stuffed the puck under the Kingston goalie. Kingston scored two in the second to finish the period 2-1. But on the drop of the puck in the third, Gino LaManna skated into the zone and took a big slap shot on net, and Universal stuffed in the rebound for his second goal of the game and a 2-2 tie. With clutch saves down the stretch from goalie Austin Essery, the Canes held on for the tie and another point in the standings.

The Hurricanes finished off round robin play against the hometown Port Huron Flags, and again they struck gold right out of the chute—just 30 seconds into the first period. Alex Oury grabbed the puck after the faceoff and used his speed to race into the Flags zone and gets a quick shot on net. The rebound popped out and Eisenberg was right there for the easy tap-in. The Jr. Canes captain got the second goal as well on a picture-perfect odd man rush at the end of the 1st period. He and T. J. Rich skated hard to the net, Rich made a brilliant tape-to-tape pass through the slot, and Oury one-timed it to the top shelf. It didn’t take long for the Jr. Canes to strike again. The referee dropped the puck in the third, and Oury passed it to Fredenburg, who skated into the zone, circled back and handed the puck off to Thayer Universal. He took two strides, picked his spot and rifled his signature wrister to the back right corner to make it 3-0. Then Oury and Eisenberg teamed up again to get the Jr. Canes’ fourth and final goal. Oury got a breakaway, took a hard shot that bounced out and Eisenberg flipped the loose puck over the goalie’s shoulder and in for a 4-1 victory. With 5 points in the standings, the unbeaten Jr. Hurricanes earned the top spot in their bracket and a challenging quarterfinal matchup with the nation’s # 4-ranked Bantam AA team, the Indianapolis Racers.

The Canes faced off against the Racers Saturday night in Port Huron’s beautiful McMorran Place arena, home of the I.H.L. Port Huron Ice Hawks. Although the Canes were clearly the underdogs, they held true to form for the tournament and jumped out to an early lead just two minutes into the game by a nifty give and go from Eisenberg to Universal, who ripped a slap shot 5-hole past the Racers’ goaltender. With tough defense led by assistant captains Ryan Cornett and Alex Keith, and 16 saves by goaltender Kyle Taylor, the Jr. Canes held off the Racers to take a 1-0 lead through the first period. Indianapolis finally broke through and scored 3 goals in the second. But with just a few minutes left in the period, the Hurricanes went on the power play. Eisenberg picked up the puck and spotted Universal all alone in the slot. Eisenberg made a quick pass from the right circle, Universal loaded up, and just torched a bomb past the Racers’ goalie to bring the Hurricanes to within one at the end of the second. Although the Jr. Canes fought hard in the 3rd period, they eventually lost 7-2 to a red-hot Racers team that made it all the way to the championship game. Still, with the 46th annual International Silver Stick Finals in the record books, the Jr. Hurricanes should feel very proud of their accomplishments at one of North America’s premier tournaments. 2008 Jr. Hurricanes Peewee “A”’ Win Atlanta Thrasher Invitational Tournament – Champions!

(Write-Up)

The Jr. Hurricanes finished the tournament season with a tremendous effort, winning all five games, most of them decisively, in their best effort of the year. Although the team had performed very well leading to the Christmas break, the team struggled to regain that consistency through January.

However, the weekend of Feb 1-3 in Atlanta would see the Peewee Jr. Hurricanes “A” regain the type of team play that had made them successful previously.

The weekend started with round robin play against the Tampa Bay Raiders, the MIC Jr. Thrashers, and the Kennesaw Jr. Thrashers. The Hurricanes earned a hard fought 1-0 win over Tampa Bay, but dominated both Thrasher teams with 7-3, and 8-3 victories. Even with these victories, the Hurricanes were seeded 3rd behind the Pelham Panthers (1st) and Atlanta Fire (2nd) out of 8 teams.

The semi final game against the Atlanta Fire was expected to be a true test of character for the team. In five previous meetings with the Fire, the record stood at 2-2-1 with all five games being decided by 2 goals or less. However, the Fire was unprepared for the tenacious fore checking and blue line dominance that they would encounter in this game. The Hurricanes had built a 3-0 lead in the first 7 minutes of the game and would continue that dominance throughout the game. The Jr. Hurricanes went on to a solid 7-2 win, with 5 of the 7 goals having 2 assists on the score sheet. These kinds of scoring plays had defined the Jr. Hurricanes throughout the weekend. In their previous victories, more than 50% of their scoring plays came from two or more passes resulting in a goal.

The final game with the top seeded Pelham Panthers would be a true test of character for the boys in red. The Jr. Hurricanes finished the 1st period with a 1-0 lead, but would relinquish that lead to finish the 2nd tied at 1-1. The third period saw the Jr. Hurricanes demonstrate another relentless fore check, coupled with a solid blue line effort, culminating in a goal mid way through the period. From that point, the Panthers were not ever able to mount an attack as the Jr. Hurricanes continued to maintain pressure in the offensive zone for a 2-1 Championship victory.

The coaching staff would like to acknowledge the team effort that the Jr. Hurricanes put forth this weekend. The entire offensive unit displayed relentless fore checking, cycled the puck to the slot and defense, moved the puck forward to open players, back checked, and broke the puck out of the zone with quickness and accuracy. The defense played stifling defensive zone hockey, played aggressively on the offensive blue line, kept opponents wide while entering the zone, limited shots on net, and delivered accurate breakout passes.

The goalies combined for a stingy 1.8 GAA for the tournament, making key saves during the first and final games to preserve the close victories. Junior Hurricanes Mite Raleigh Youth Hockey Association (RYHA) Trophy Showcase 2007 – 2008 Fall Ice Hockey Season

Mite Jr. Hurricanes Win Thrashers Festival

The Mite Jr. Hurricanes took home the championship banner for the Mite A division of the Atlanta Thrashers Festival. The Jr. Canes earned the title while competing with five other teams from the southeast February 29th through March 2nd.

The Mite Jr. Canes compiled a 5 – 0 record over the weekend, but not without some heartburn for Coach Lyle Wildgoose and his staff. During round-robin play the Jr. Canes won 9-2, 4-1, and 4-0 against the Greensboro Stars, Duluth Jr. Thrashers and Charlotte Flames. The game of the tournament was the semi-final game against the Atlanta Fire. The Fire came into the game with 2 wins and a tie which ranked them second to the Jr. Hurricanes after the round-robin.

The game was a back and forth affair with the Fire leading 2-1 after 2 periods. The Jr. Canes scored twice early in the third period, but the Fire tied it up late. Goalie Holden Rogers held the fort with several great saves and the boys were able to kill a late penalty to send the game into overtime.

Overtime didn’t produce a winner despite chances for both teams. In the shootout Riley Johnson, Nick Hale and Nicholas Wildgoose all buried their shots while Holden Rogers stoned three straight Atlanta Fire shooters to seal the win and a trip to the finals. In the final game the Jr. Hurricanes were not to be denied and they defeated Greensboro 9-0.

Congratulations to the players and coaches for a well earned tournament championship

U16 Carolina Junior Hurricanes Girls Win Capital Beltway Hockey League Tournament

The U16 Carolina Junior Hurricane Girls team claimed the regular 2007-8 season title and on Sunday (2/24/2008) secured the tournament championship of the Capital Beltway Hockey League with a 4-3 victory over the Montgomery Blue Devils Gold team in an early morning game at the Logsdon rink in Laurel, Maryland. It took five shots in the shoot out of a 3-3 game before a blue liner, Minnie Webster, drove the puck past the Montgomery goalie, Caroline Schweitzer, for the sudden death victory.

The Hurricanes goalie, Rebecca Cohen stopped 10 of 13 shots on goal and stoned the Royals on all six of their penalty shots to enable the 11-1 season champions to avenge the one league-game loss suffered at the hands of the Blue Devils back in January. In addition to Webster, the "D" was led by Kylie Monroe, Kathryn Collins, Alexandra Beeler and Sydney Borden, with Monroe and Beeler gaining assists in the hard fought game. The Hurricanes got off to a good early start with a power play goal from winger Emily Smith less than five minutes into the game, followed by goals from centers Rachel Van Schagen (who also assisted Smith's goal) and Anna Bukowski before the half way mark of the first period.

Other Hurricane wingers, who moved the puck well and contributed to the well-played game (no penalties for the Canes), were Coleen Bove, Alexandra Klein, Abbi Pittman, Leah Adams, and Kelly Sito. The Blue Devils were able to get on the board with about five minutes left in the first period with a goal by Jennifer Dewey -- after a time out called by their coach. The Blue Devils' Julie Benjamin scored the second goal of the game in the second period and tied the game at the 11:19 mark in the third period. Neither team could score in the remainder of the period nor in the five minute overtime. The Blue Devil goal tender Schweitzer saw 24 shots on goal, stopping 21. The game was characterized by few whistles: no box time for the Hurricanes and only two penalties (a hook and a slash) for the Blue Devils.

The U16 Junior Hurricane girls are coached by Larry Van Schagen, assisted by Tim Bukowski and Mark Monroe. Deborah Beeler is the team manager.

The 16U Girls Jr. Hurricanes finished their season with an 11-1 record earning them the title of regular season champions in the Capital Beltway Hockey League.

Congratulations to the Raleigh Renegades Bantam B team for the REPEAT Silver Stick Eastern Regional Championship on September 30, 2007

The Raleigh Renegades Bantam B team traveled to Columbia, Maryland over the weekend of September 28th -30th to take part in the Silver Stick Eastern Regional Tournament.

The Bantam Division of the tournament was made up of eight teams divided into the Emerald and Silver Divisions. The Renegades were slotted in the Silver Division with their first game vs. the Richmond Royals.

The game started off with the teams working hard at both ends of the ice and nothing to show for the effort until late in the first period, when the Renegades scored with nice breakout, where Greg Resch found the back of the net with an assist from Larry Urgo. Then, less than three minutes later, Brandon Stanley also scored with a nice assist from Landon Pope. At the end of the first period it was 2- 0 in favor of the Renegades. The second period saw Raleigh score again with a breakaway goal by Larry Urgo. With outstanding blue line play and solid goaltending (16 total saves) the Renegades ended up shutting out the Royals to win 3-0.

On Saturday the Renegades took the ice to play the Montgomery (MD) Blue Devils. This was the team the Renegades defeated last year to win the Silver Stick Eastern Regional, so you knew they had a score to settle with the team from Raleigh. The first period started out with the Renegades out-shooting the Blue Devils 13-1, but with nothing the show on the scoreboard. The first period ended 0-0.

The second period had the Renegades taking a 2-0 lead with goals by Devin Allen (power play) and Larry Urgo (shorthanded) going into the third period. This period would see the Renegades extend the lead with goals by Tyler Glass, Kevin Coughlin and Brandon Stanley. Again the blue liners of Michael Darges, Quinn Riggs, Joe Hobbes, Brett Bischler, Brandon Stanley and Charlie Slone played tough defense to allow goaltender Tyler Sampson to gain the shutout.

The second game on Saturday found the Renegades playing a disciplined and fast Navy Ram team. Both teams entered the game with 2-0 records, so you knew this would be a good hockey game. As expected, the game was played tough and tight with only nine total shot in the first period. The Renegades took the lead midway through the first with a goal from Ben DeMartino and an assist from Landon Pope. The second period saw the Renegades take a 2-0 lead with only 2:15 gone in the period. A goal from Landon Pope and an assist from Chris Powers allowed the Renegades to take the lead into the third period. Navy was able to find the net half way through the third to make it a one-goal game.

With a little under two minutes to play in the last period, Navy pulled their goaltender for an extra skater, but goalie Chase Jenkins was up to the task, blocking everything that was thrown his way. The Renegades won a close one 2-1 to move on to the cross-over game as the top-ranked team in the Silver Division.

Their next opponent in the semi finals was the Harford (MD) North Stars. The early Sunday morning game found the Renegades getting off to a rough start. With only 30 seconds gone in the first period they were called for a check from behind, giving the North Stars the early momentum. The North Stars took advantage of the situation and scored two goals in the first to take a 2-0 lead.

This was the first game of the tournament where the Renegades had to play from behind. The second period was back and forth, with most of the play taking place in the North Stars' defensive end. The Renegades finally scored at the 8:19 mark. The period ended with the Renegades out-shooting the North Stars 21-10 but trailing 2-1. The third period started with most of the play taking place between the blue lines until the North Stars get another score with a power play goal with 14:26 left in the game. The score was 3-1 North Stars and the Renegades were behind by two goals for the second time in the game.

With 11:30 left to play, Brett Bischler scored a power play goal with a screaming slap shot from the point. The momentum was shifting back to the Renegades, but they will had to pull out all the stop to try and tie up the game.

With 1:54 left to play, goalie Tyler Sampson was pulled for the extra skater and with 1:04 left in the game, Landon Pope took a beautiful pass from Brandon Lohmiller and sent the puck into the back of the net. The period ended with the score tied 3-3.

Next came the five minute sudden death overtime period. Most of the play was in the North Stars' end of the ice, but no one scored, meaning that the game went to a shootout. Tyler Sampson was in goal and the six shooters for each team were selected. The first three shooters for both teams were stonewalled by the goalies. Landon Pope came up for the Renegades and made a nice move on the North Star goalie to slip one in. Goalie Tyler Sampson was in the spotlight next and came through with a nice stick save.

It was then up to Greg Resch for the Renegades, and he skated to his left and then back to the center of the ice and scored with beautiful shot to take the Renegades to the championship game.

The Championship game found Raleigh playing Navy once again. Navy won their semifinal game, also in a shootout, against the NJ Bandits. It took them 12 rounds to get it done. So the rematch was set - the Renegades vs. the Navy Rams.

The Renegades come out skating hard at both ends of the ice. The blue-liners were putting on a defensive clinic while the forwards were passing and back-checking to put as much pressure as they could on Navy. The strategy finally paid off with Larry Urgo scoring with a nice pass from the point by Michael Darges. Urgo scored again with an assist from Greg Resch with only 9.8 seconds left in the first period.

In the second period, the Renegades showed how much they wanted to repeat as champions. They out-shot Navy 16-3 and took a commanding 5-0 lead. After three more Renegade goals early in the 3rd period, the Rams finally got on the board. The final score ended up 8-1 in favor of the Renegades, with Raleigh out-shooting Navy 33-10. The Renegades brought home another Silver Stick banner and will be making another trip to Pelham, ON., Canada.

For the tournament, the Renegades scored 22 times while only allowing five goals over the five games. http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NHLPage&id=18394

The Raleigh Renegades Bantam ice hockey team won the ‘A2’ Division of the President’s Day Congressional Cup in Washington DC (Feb 16-18, 2008).

The Renegades played in the A2 Bantam Division which includes the Frederick, Fury (MD), American Eagles (NJ), Duluth Jr Thrashers (GA) and the Hatfield IceDogs (PA).

The Renegades started the tournament on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 win over the Fury. The Renegades out-shot the Fury 30-10 to come away with the win.

On Sunday the Renegades played the Eagles in the early afternoon and came away with a 6-0 shutout. Then that night they played the Jr. Thrashers winning by a 2-1 margin, that was made close when the Jr. Thrashers scored in the final 4 minutes of the game, but the Renegades played tough defense and survived the final rushes by the Jr. Thrashers.

Monday morning brought the 2 undefeated teams in the A2 Division together to play, the Renegades and the Hatfield IceDogs. The Renegades took a 1-0 lead late into the 3rd period when the IceDogs tied the game with a power play goal. The game ended tied 1-1, with both of these teams set to meet in the Championship Games at 3:50PM.

The Championship Game was a hard played game with the IceDogs taking numerous penalties allowing the Renegades to carry a 4-0 lead into the 3rd period. The IceDogs finally did break thru and score with about 2 minutes left in the game, however it too little too late, allowing the Renegades to bring home another Tournament Banner. Through 5 games goalie Tyler Sampson allowed only 4 goals while the team score 14. This was a total team effort with excellent blue line play and pin point passing by the forwards.

Raleigh Renegades Bantam B Win Congressional Cup – Spring Classic ‘B’ in Washington DC (March 14-16, 2008)

The Raleigh Renegades Bantam B ice hockey team went undefeated during the Spring Classic ‘B’ Tournament this past weekend (March 14-16, 2008) in Washington, DC.

The weekend started off on Friday afternoon with game vs the NJ Devils. This is a team that the Renegades played in the past, so both teams were very much aware of each others style of play.

The Devils opened the scoring late in the first period, but this led did not last long. Brandon Stanley scored just 2 mins and 34 seconds later for the Renegades to tie the score. The period end 1-1. After that it was all Renegades and the Brandon Stanley show. In the second period Brett Bischler score with a screaming slap shot for the right point and then Greg Resch also put one in the back of the net. After that the 3rd period belonged to the Renegades. Brandon Stanley completed his hat trick with 2 more goals. Renegades win 5-1.

The second game in the Division was vs the Binghamton (NY) Stars. The Renegades opened the 1st period with 4 goals by Michale Darges, Chris Powers, Brandon Stanley and Tyler Glass. The Stars close the gap and score 2 goals in the 2nd period. At the end of the 2nd period it is 4-2 Renegades. In the 3rd period Devin Allen and Greg Resch score for the Renegades and the blueliners shut down the Stars for a 6-2 win.

Game 3 in the Division finds the Renegades taking on the Westchester (PA) Quakers. The Renegades open the scoring in the 1st period with goals by Devin Allen, Kevin Coughlin and Larry Urgo. The defense picks up where they left off in period 3 of the prior game by shutting down the Quckers. In the 2nd and 3rd periods the 2 teams trade goals with Chris Powers and Brandon Stanley scoring for the Renegades. The final score is 5-2 Renegades. They finish 1st in their division and will play Bronxville (NY) Blackhawks who finished second in the other Division. This is the semi-final game.

In the semi-final game the Renegades come out strong with 3 goals by Quinn Riggs, Chris Powers and Kevin Coughlin. That is all the scoring until the 3rd period. Both Greg Resch and Landon Pope score for the Renegades and they take a 5-0 lead with 6 mins and 27 second remaining in the game. The Blackhawks score late in the 3rd and the game end 5-1 with the Renegades advancing to the Championship Game.

The Championship Game matches 2 very familiar foes, the Renegades vs the Charlotte Jr Checkers. This is a team that Raleigh has played 8 times prior to this game, holding a 4-2-2 record vs the Jr Checkers. All the prior games have been very close and very well played. The Renegades took the lead just 1 min and 21 seconds into the game, when Landon Pope forced a turnover in the Checker end of the ice and scored un assisted. Then the Checkers score on a controversial play which has a Checkers player in the net on top of the Renegade goalie, Tyler Sampson, the net off the pegs, the puck across the goal line and the 2 officials skating in from the blue line. After long official conference it is ruled a Checker goal. Then with 3 mins and 33 seconds remaining in the 1st period Captain Brandon Lohmiller scores for the Renegades. The 1st period end 2-1 Renegades. The next 2 periods have no scoring but a parade to the penalty by both teams, with 16 total penalties called on both teams. The rivalry and the desire to win the Championship are very evident. The final 57 seconds are played 6 on 5 as Charlotte pulls their goalie, but the blueliners of Brett Bischler, Michael Darges, Joe Hobbs, Quinn Riggs and Charlie Slone along with the forwards do not allow a shot to get thru. Renegades win a hard fought battle vs their CHL rival the Charlotte Jr Checkers.

The Renegades finish the tournament with 23 goals scored while allowing only 7.

This is the 3rd Championship Banner that the Renegades Bantam Team has brought back to Raleigh and The Factory Ice House this yr. Prior Championships were from the Silver Stick Mid Atlantic Regional ‘B’, Congressional Cup – Presidents Day ‘A’ and Congressional Cup – Spring Classic ‘B’. Congratulations to the players and coaching staff on a great season.

Raiders Pee Wee - ’08 Steel City President’s Day Cup Champions!

The Raleigh Raiders Peewee hockey club is the Champions of the 2008 Steel City President’s Day Hockey Tournament for the Pee Wee B Division, held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania held February 16-18, 2008.

The Raiders faced stiff competition from elite clubs from Ohio, Pennsylvania and Delaware throughout the tournament. The Raiders started their journey to the cup with 3 – 2 victories in their first two tilts against the Cleveland Heights Tigers and Delaware Jr. Blue Hens. In their final round robin game they faced the Mustangs from Strongsville, Ohio and dominated play turning in an 8 – 0 victory. In the semi-final round they again faced the Jr. Blue Hens and this time topped the Jr. Blue Hens by a score of 3 – 1.

The championship game, against the Bethlehem Blast was a hard fought battle between two strong and determined teams. Raiders’ goaltender, Adam Migirov turned in an incredible performance with some outstanding saves. The Raiders Blueliners played a solid defensive game really protecting the Raider end of the ice and the forwards were fast and exploited solid passing and positioning to generate a good offensive game. The teams’ play exemplified the year-long team motto “play hard – play smart”. As a result the Raiders prevailed over the Blast with a 4-2 victory to win the team’s first Championship win after advancing to the Championship games in three of the four 2007-2008 season tournaments attended by the Raiders.

The players would like to thank their parents and families for their commitment and sacrifice which has enabled them to play hockey this season and congratulations to all of the Raiders on an excellent tournament and a great season! Renegades Peewees Finalists at Congressional Cup Midwinter Classic!

January 21, 2008

Ashburn, Va. -- In a North Vs. South showdown, the Raleigh Renegades’ strong defense and clutch goaltending led to wins over three strong New Jersey teams and a perfect 4-0 record heading into Monday’s championship game.

In Saturday night’s first game, the Renegades battled soft ice and a feisty New Jersey Devils club to grind out a 4-1 win in a tough, physical game that featured outstanding goal tending from the Renegades’ Brian Nelson. With a one goal deficit in the first period, Renegades’ captain Lennox Atkinson gathered up a rebound to fire in the tying goal off a “tic-tac-toe” feed from line mates Max Haensel and Evan Pinkney. Haensel then capitalized on another Pinkney helper to score the go-ahead goal late in the first. Following a scoreless second stanza, winger Dennis Hering opened the third with a sweet, top-shelf backhander off a feed from line mate Tyler Colagerakis. The final tally came late in the third period when center Jake Raleigh scored on a breakaway giving the Renegades the 4-1 wins in the opening game of the tournament.

Game two introduced the Renegades to the speedy Montclair (New Jersey) Blues in a chilly 7AM Sunday morning start at the Ashburn Ice House. The Renegades jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when winger Tyler Colagerakis converted a neutral zone turnover to a breakaway and buried the biscuit for what would be the game winning goal. Strong defensive play combined with clutch goaltending from Rhys Collins protected the Renegades’ lead. There was no shortage of excitement in the final minute of play as the Renegades shut down a relentless 6 on 5, empty net attack by the Blues to seal the 1-0 win against a talented Blues club.

Next up, was a 7:30PM Sunday start for game three against the Princeton Tigers on the beautiful, new Washington Capitals’ practice ice at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Despite a slow start against the strong puck movement of the Princeton club, the Renegades’ defense again stepped up and complemented a perfect performance in net by Brian Nelson. Renegades wingers Josh Berning and Brandon Stetkiewicz came alive with Berning scoring two goals off feeds from Stetkiewicz. Stetkiewicz earned his third point of the night by scoring the final goal of the game off a quick pass from defenseman Thomas Vogel. Winger Evan Pinkney and defenseman Cam Reaugh added two more in the 5-0 win over the Tigers and the Renegades’ second shutout of the tournament.

An early start on Monday morning offered an eagerly anticipated rematch between the top-seeded Renegades and the New Jersey Devils in the first semifinal playoff game of the day. With Rhys Collins back in net and the score board lit up with penalties for most of the game, the Renegades battled back from an early 2-0 deficit, killing two 5 on 3 penalties, to knot the game at 2-2 in regulation play. Brandon Stetkiewicz got things going late in the first with an unassisted goal and Evan Pinkney scored in the second period after picking the Devils’ pocket in the offensive zone and stuffing in an unassisted wrap around goal to bring the Renegades back to even. The Renegades’ smothering defense took over in the third period holding the Devils at bay and sending the contest to bonus play. With two minutes gone in a fast-paced, back-and-forth overtime, defenseman Thomas Vogel skated through a hard check in the Devils’ zone and fired the puck on goal leading to a rebound at the top of the crease. Center Jake Raleigh dished the rebound to Brandon Stetkiewicz who lit the lamp for the team’s first OT win and a trip to the championship game.

On Monday afternoon, the Renegades carried their perfect 4-0 record and top-seed honors into a hard fought championship game against a big and fast New Jersey Titans club. With Collins and Nelson splitting goaltending duties, the Renegades left it all out on the ice, skating with the hard-charging Titans club and battling through a seemingly endless string of penalty kills. In the end, the Titans’ fast offense and tough defense earned them four unanswered goals and a well-deserved championship, leaving the battle weary Renegades to bring home the runner-up banner. Hats off to the all the Peewee B division teams for a great weekend that featured several exciting and close games.
