THE SHOOT: WRESTLING’S REALITY ON THE INDEPENDENT SCENE Chris Saunders A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the degree of Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Chapel Hill 2010 Approved by: Adviser: Prof. Jan Yopp Reader: Dr. Barbara Friedman Reader: Dr. Elizabeth Hedgpeth © 2010 Chris Saunders ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT CHRIS SAUNDERS: The Shoot: Wrestling’s Reality on the Independent Scene (Under the direction of Jan Yopp, Barbara Friedman, and Elizabeth Hedgpeth) Over the last ten years, professional wrestling has become more corporate and monopolized. World Wrestling Entertainment is the only major promotion with a few promotions, such as Total Nonstop Action, trying to compete. As a result, those major promotions have changed who they target from traditional wrestling fans to the mainstream population at large. Wrestling purists scoff at the programming they see those promotions produce on television. The alternative for the old-school, dedicated wrestling fan is the independent circuit. The three articles that follow work to illustrate the lives lived, the dreams fulfilled and the hopes broken on wrestling’s indy scene. The first article serves as an overview by featuring both wrestlers and fans in a gimmick- based promotion in Raleigh, North Carolina. The second article profiles a wrestling promoter and discusses the financial burdens one undertakes to run a promotion full-time. The final article describes the role wrestling schools play in the independent world and features a former superstar who has turned teacher.

  • This Is Men's Derby
This is Men’s Derby: Identity, Belonging, and Community in Men’s Roller Derby By: Dawn Fletcher A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Social Sciences Department of Sociological Studies August 2018 1 2 ABSTRACT The emerging sport of roller derby was initially conceived as an inclusive, DIY/ ‘alternative’ sport. Tensions exist around the competing desires to retain this focus, but also to become commercially viable and professional. Existing research positions roller derby as women-only and interprets the sport as a space for identity and gender expression. Offering an insider account, I develop an ethnographic case study of a men’s roller derby team. Through data gathered during a year-long participant observation and sixteen in-depth interviews, I examine the relationship between identity, belonging, and community in the development of a specific, localised roller derby culture. Underpinned by an interest in the realisation of gendered identifications, this thesis explores the interdependence of inclusivity and exclusivity, performance and professionalism, and self-image and public image. It also considers those more prosaic tensions of ‘doing’ roller derby that exist between playing and officiating, ethos and administration, and continuation and change. In doing so it attempts to provide a sociological lens through which roller derby can be seen to be achieved, experienced, and understood in the practices of those who engage with the community. Whilst ethnographic accounts are necessarily situated within specific contexts, this thesis extends the literature on roller derby by highlighting how the competing and dislocated ideals associated with the sport are experienced within very particular places.

BODIES AS STORIES IN WOMEN’S FLAT TRACK ROLLER DERBY Elizabeth Ashley Thompson “A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of American Studies, Curriculum in Folklore.” Chapel Hill 2013 Approved by: Robert Cantwell Della Pollock Patricia Sawin ABSTRACT ELIZABETH ASHLEY THOMPSON: Bodies As Stories in Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby (Under the direction of Robert Cantwell, Della Pollock, and Patricia Sawin) As the fastest growing women’s sport in the world, roller derby begins with the efforts of groups of everyday women. This paper explores the motivations and experiences of a roller derby league in the Triad region of North Carolina. Borrowing theories from performance studies, gender studies, and folklore and anthropology, this paper considers how participants shape, negotiate, transgress, and play with identity through three central concepts: community, performance, and body. Though roller derby participants come together to take part in a fast-paced, contact team sport, they talk of themselves as a distinct “community,” meaning their relationships extend beyond shared athletic practice. At the center of the roller derby experience is the way the roller derby community and emergent identities are enacted within and through shared athletic performance. Lastly, this paper considers how participants construct a skater owned-and-operated, “women’s space” in order to critique, explore, and re/imagine the physical body. ii To the inspiring women of the Camel City Thrashers. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS Chapter I.
