Spring’s blue sky After a miserable winter with newspapers and television screens filled with semi-coherent tweets from a certain Presidential ego-maniac, not to mention pre-and post-Brexit self-inflicted gloom and despondency, Spring is finally here and with it the chance of some decent weather and longer days to enjoy the Yorkshire Dales – just voted Britain’s favourite National Park. And what better way than to escape our rubbish-filled electronic screens by exploring that same National Park by walking, or maybe re-walking, part or all the Dales Way? Thankfully the long saga of flood damage problems on the Dales Way in Cumbria is now all behind us. Thanks to the hard work of so many rangers, footpath officers, contractors and National Park and other volunteers, almost all the Dales Way is now fully re-opened for walking. You will read elsewhere of what has been achieved over the autumn and winter. In fact, there is especially good news from Burneside as exciting plans forming the vibrant, community-led Burneside Vision to develop the village as a community-led eco- and visitor-friendly place to call in or stay on the Dales Way begin to be rolled out. Top news is a new small brewery at Bowston, north of the village alongside the River Kent, waiting to welcome walkers, which is also planned to soon have a walkers’ and cyclists’ cafe and a shop.

About Our Parish Millom Without Parish Council is situated in the Copeland constituency of South West Cumbria. The Parish footprint is both in the Lake District National Park or within what is regarded as the setting of the Lake District National Park. This picturesque area is predominately pastoral farmland, open fell and marshland. Within its boundary are the villages of The Green, The Hill, Lady Hall and Thwaites. On the North West side, shadowed by Black Combe, is the Whicham Valley and to the South the Duddon Estuary. On its borders are the villages of Silecroft, Kirksanton, Haverigg, Broughton in Furness, Foxfield, Kirkby in Furness, Ireleth, Askam and the town of Millom. On the horizon are the Lake District Fells which include Coniston, Langdale and Scafell Ranges and is the gateway to Ulpha, Duddon and Lickle Valleys. Wordsworth wrote extensively of the Duddon, a river he knew and loved from his early years. The Parish has approximately 900 Residents. The main industry in this and surrounding areas is tourism and its relevant services. Farming is also predominant and in Millom there are a number of small industrial units. The Parish is also home to Ghyll Scaur Quarry. 2. Our Heritage Millom Without is rich in sites of both historic and environmental interest. Historic features include an important and spectacular bronze age stone circle at Swinside, the Duddon Iron furnace, and Duddon Bridge. The landscape of Millom Without includes the Duddon estuary and the views up to the Western and Central Lake District Fells.

The Sub-Group were informed that a Route Strategy Refresh would be undertaken following a call for evidence during the summer where high level issues had been identified in the Barrow district.

    SOUTH LAKELAND DISTRICT COUNCIL AND THE LAKE DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK AUTHORITY Town and Country Planning, England The Neighbourhood Planning (General) Regulations 2012 In accordance with Part 2 of the Neighbourhood Planning (General) Regulations 2012, South Lakeland District Council and the Lake District National Park Authority recently consulted on an application made by Burneside Parish Council for the designation of the parishes of Strickland Roger and Strickland Ketel (excluding land known as the West of High Sparrowmire site and part of the North of Laurel Gardens site) as a Neighbourhood Area for the purposes of Neighbourhood Planning. Following the consultation, South Lakeland District Council’s Cabinet approved the application on 29 June 2016 and designated the Neighbourhood Area. The Lake District National Park Authority has also approved the application. In accordance with the above regulations, both authorities must publicise the following information about the designation to bring it to the attention of people who live, work or carry on business in the area to which the designation relates. The name of the Neighbourhood Area The name of the Neighbourhood Area is Burneside Neighbourhood Area A map identifying the area designated Please see accompanying map.
