Spring’s blue sky After a miserable winter with newspapers and television screens filled with semi-coherent tweets from a certain Presidential ego-maniac, not to mention pre-and post-Brexit self-inflicted gloom and despondency, Spring is finally here and with it the chance of some decent weather and longer days to enjoy the Yorkshire Dales – just voted Britain’s favourite National Park. And what better way than to escape our rubbish-filled electronic screens by exploring that same National Park by walking, or maybe re-walking, part or all the Dales Way? Thankfully the long saga of flood damage problems on the Dales Way in Cumbria is now all behind us. Thanks to the hard work of so many rangers, footpath officers, contractors and National Park and other volunteers, almost all the Dales Way is now fully re-opened for walking. You will read elsewhere of what has been achieved over the autumn and winter. In fact, there is especially good news from Burneside as exciting plans forming the vibrant, community-led Burneside Vision to develop the village as a community-led eco- and visitor-friendly place to call in or stay on the Dales Way begin to be rolled out. Dorset Days and Dragon Days (with Jamie Bruce Lockhart) cover my life from 1947 to 1954 in Dorset and 1955 at the Dragon School. My own account of the Dragon experience is in Becoming a Dragon. Lakeland Life describes my home life in the Lake District from 1954 to 1960 and is paralleled by Sedbergh Schooldays, an account of my time at Sedbergh School in Yorkshire 1955-60. Later volumes will take the story on to Oxford University for six years and beyond. All of the volumes are principally based on contemporary documents, especially letters written by members of the family. This volume is based on several sets of letters, my mother’s to me and to my father (when she was away from him on home leave), my letters to my parents and my sister Fiona’s letters to my parents.

William Hibbert Marshall, owner of Patterdale Hall, donated a piece of land to allow for the building of a permanent Monument in February 1921 on the shores of Ullswater, midway between Glenridding and Patterdale. The memorial slab was hewn from a twenty ton piece of local slate and the eventual undressed slate stone still weighs in at around 5 tons. It was unveiled in October 1921. As part of the 100th Anniversary Commemoration of the outbreak of World War One, we have tried to find out more about the men whose names are inscribed on the Memorial, from both World Wars, on the Roll of Honour in the Village Hall, and also about life in and around Patterdale and Glenridding at the time.

You have asked for further details concerning proposals for development in the English Lake District and we feel that it would be helpful to preface our response with some explanation of the planning functions and powers of the Lake District National Park Authority, which is the planning authority for the whole of the candidate English Lake District World Heritage site. The English Lake District is an outstanding cultural landscape that has evolved over a long period of time and needs to continue evolving to sustain its future. We have a vibrant community of some 42,000 residents and an economy that is sustained by the key activities of upland hill farming and tourism. These activities inevitably need to develop in order to sustain the local economy and along with other requirements of the Lake District community, they generate planning applications which are determined by the Lake District National Park Authority. UK National Parks have the highest level of planning protection in the UK and the framework for our decision-making is outlined below. BACKGROUND TO THE PLANNING FUNCTION OF UK NATIONAL PARKS UK National Parks were established under the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949, and amended by the Environment Act 1995, to: conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage (of the National Parks); and promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities (of the National Parks) by the public.
