"Hans took up his father's trade of shepherd and used the shepherd's staff as his signature mark. When he disposed of his share of his mother's property in 1728 he signed the documents with his distinctive mark of a shepherd's staff through and "S" in an oversized "H". The same mark was used when he witnessed the marriage contract of his brother, Georg, in 1729 and on his oath of allegiance to the British Crown upon landing in Philadelphia in August, 1733. The "S" with the oversize "H" without a shepherd's staff appears on his will in 1762. This is the single most conclusive proof that Johannes Schnepp , son of Lorentz in Geiswiller is indeed the same Johannes Schnepp who arrived in Philadelphia in 1733 and settled in Frederick County, Va. by 1735."

"Johannes (Hans) Schnepp was among the earliest settlers in the Shenandoah Valley, probably arriving with the Jost Hite group that settled on the Opequon Creek in 1734. When the Rev. Johann Casper Stoever visited the fledgling community of Virginians in the Spring of 1735, Johannes Schnepp and Barbara were among those who had a child baptised and they stood as sponsors for children of Ulrich Bucher and Philip Kleesz. Hans Schnepp was also one of the Page 4 of 7 Tuesday, March 30, 2010 8:10:48 PM Hans Schnepp & (1) Apollonia Mauser, (2) Maria Heffer

Generation 4 (con't) Johannes Schnepp and Barbara were among those who had a child baptised and they stood as sponsors for children of Ulrich Bucher and Philip Kleesz. Hans Schnepp was also one of the signers of a road petition, by Shenandoah Valley settlers, to the Orange County Court in July, 1737."

"The Schnepp family settled in the western area of Frederick County along Little North Mountain on one of the drains of Cedar Creek. The family name soon became "Snapp" in English records and in May, 1746 John Snapp Sr. with his sons John and Lawrence were naturalized as citizens of Virginia. John Snapp Sr. and John Jr. were among a group of men who petitioned the Frederick County Court for a road from the gap in Little North Mountain to John Hite's mill in May 1749. The court agreed to the petition and John Snapp Sr. was appointed surveyor and overseer of the road. "

"John wrote a will 30 Nov 1761, directing that he be buried next to his beloved wife, Barbara, deceased. His Bible went to his son, John, and his son, Lawrence, was named executor of the will. This document is now in the "Painter Collection", Microfilm reel #2, Shenandoah County Library, Edinburg, Va."
