Excellent look at fascinating filmsBy monescuThough the other books in this series are also quite good, this one has a particular advantage for me because the films and stars it concentrates on are my favorites. You can't go better than William Powell, Kay Francis, and Claire Dodd, and Pre- Code films don't get much more wonderful than JEWEL ROBBERY and ONE WAY PASSAGE. Thoughtful analysis of great films. Before Myrna Loy became his big screen BFF for life and before Bette Davis became the queen of the Warner Bros. lot, two very different stars made their inroads at the studio. William Powell, a black hat villain from the silent screen, was given new life as the talkies revealed his urbane wit and sophistication. Kay Francis, meanwhile, exuded class and authority, a glamorous individual who played everyone from vixens to doctors. Separate, they were strong. Together, they were fantastic. This issue examines one of their bestndash; and, frankly, wildestmdash; pairings, the 1932 comedy Jewel Robbery. Also included is a review of one of Powellrsquo;s best efforts at Warners and one of Francisrsquo; most delightful comedies to boot. • Selling Masculinity at Warner Bros.: William Powell, a Case Study
Katie Walsh Selling Masculinity at Warner Bros.: William Powell, A Case Study Abstract William Powell became a star in the 1930s due to his unique brand of suave charm and witty humor—a quality that could only be expressed with the advent of sound film, and one that took him from mid-level player typecast as a villain, to one of the most popular romantic comedy leads of the era. His charm lay in the nonchalant sophistication that came naturally to Powell and that he displayed with ease both on screen and off. He was exemplary of the success of the new kind of star that came into their own during the transition to sound: sharp- or silver-tongued actors who were charming because of their way with words and not because of their silver screen faces. Powell also exercised a great deal of control over his publicity and star image, which is best examined during his short and failed tenure as a Warner Bros. during the advent of his rise to stardom. Despite holding a great amount of power in his billing and creative control, Powell was given a parade of cookie-cutter dangerous playboy roles, and the terms of his contract and salary were constantly in flux over the three years he spent there. With the help of his agent Myron Selznick, Powell was able to navigate between three studios in only a matter of a few years, in search of the perfect fit for his natural abilities as an actor. This experimentation with star image and publicity marked the period of the early 1930s in Hollywood, as studios dealt with the quickly evolving art and technological form, industrial and business practices, and a shifting cultural and moral landscape.

Before and after damage 'Vandalized' Pieta will be repaired By JAMES C. O'NEILL VATICAN CITY - (NC) - Michelan- gelo's masterpiece, the Pieta, severely damaged by a hammer-wielding Hungarian will be restored as faithfully as possible to its original beauty but will remain forever flawed. The 6,700-pound statue carved from a single block of white Cararra marble was smashed by several hammer blows shortly before noon Pentecost Sunday, May 20, in its side chapel in St. Peter's Basilica. The statue, portraying the sorrowing Virgin holding the limp, dead body of Christ, is world famous and considered perhaps the most valued treasure of the Vatican. ACCORDING to visitors in the church at the time, a bearded man leaped over a low marble railing of the chapel, jumped on a table in front of the statue and began flailing away with a mason's hammer. In the rain of blows on the figure, of the Virgin the (continued on page 21) CHE PIETA," by Michelangelo, is shown left in 1964 as it was photographed during »e New York World's Fair. • The Image of the Journalist in Silent Film, Part One: 1890 to 1919
Journalist in Silent Film 35 The Image of the Journalist in Silent Film, 1890 to 1929: Part One 1890 to 1919 Joe Saltzman Professor of Journalism Director of the Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture (IJPC) A Project of the Norman Lear Center Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism University of Southern California Los Angeles, CA [email protected] with Liz Mitchell Senior Research Associate Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture (IJPC) Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism University of Southern California Los Angeles, CA [email protected] Introduction This is the first installment in the landmark study of “The Image of the Journalist in Silent Film, 1890 to 1929.” It covers 1,948 films from 1890 to 1919. Part Two will cover the years from 1920 to the beginning of recorded sound in 1929. This is the first comprehensive study of the beginning of cinema’s earliest depictions of the journalist, mostly newspaper reporters, editors, and publishers. Newspaper fiction flourished at a time when journalism “was a revolutionary force, tearing up traditions, redefining public morality, and lending voice and encouragement to the disenfranchised. It reflected currents sweeping through every phase of American life. The skyrocketing circulations, the manic search for exclusive news, the sensational headlines, and the concentration of newspaper ownership were signs of an America changing from a rural society to an urban and industrial one. Since journalism so clearly mirrored and so loudly supported the new order, it became the preeminent symbol for the mechanization, standardization, democratization, and vulgarization of culture.”1 Historian Howard Good points out that the 1890s “represented a watershed not only in American journalism but also in American history.

The American Catholic Church Censors the Movies Traces the rise of the movie industry from its raffish nickelodeon roots in the late nineteenth century to enormous popularity in the first half of the twentieth century. Self-censorship by the movie industry to satisfy its moralist critics having failed, Hollywood found it in its interests to use Catholics to censor those motion pictures the Church judged dangerous to souls. That effort was a double-barreled one: Faced with having to comply with expensive and diverse demands from city and state censorship boards to delete scenes, in 1930 the movie industry accepted an elaborate prescriptive film code, written by a Jesuit monsignor, describing what could and could not be shown and said. For the first four years enforcement was lacking, but by 1934, the Production Code Administration (PCA), led by an energetic Catholic layman and his staff, was empowered to scrutinize a film’s theme, script, language, costuming, etc., at every step of the process.
