Kuhn By MARY LYNN BRENNAN* I Introduction Sports reporting, long the province of male writers, is a major field of journalism that is now beginning to open up to women.2 But getting the job as a sportswriter is only half the battle. When sports teams deny women writers equal access to their locker rooms for post-game interviews, they deny wo- men an equal chance to compete with their male counterparts. In response to being barred from the New York Yankees locker room during the 1977 World Series, Melissa Ludtke, a sportswriter for Sports Illustrated, and its publisher, Time, Inc., brought a suit against the New York Yankees, Major League Baseball, and the City of New York.3 The 1978 suit, filed in the Southern District Court of New York, claimed that the New York Yankees were violating Ms. -

It has been especially effective in this regard because, despite being suffused with politics and signifi cantly commodifi ed, sport somehow still manages to present itself and to be seen by many as somehow above and beyond the mundane world of political and economic conduct. Developing international relationships through sport – so-called sport diplomacy – is viewed as a reasonably safe, benign way of making friends and managing confl icts (Levermore and Budd 2004). There are several historical examples, ranging from the so-called ping-pong diplomacy that brought the United States and Communist China into contact in the early 1970s (Xu 2008) to the attempted use of the Olympics to improve relations between North and South Korea (Merkel 2008). When, for example, in 2006 Australia left the Oceania Football Confederation for the larger Asian Football Confederation, the non-sporting justifi cation was that of ‘football diplomacy’: Sport … provides a common point of conversation between societies. -

One of the Boys: The (Gendered) Performance of My Football Career Ms. Kasey Symons PhD Candidate 2019 The Institute for Sustainable Industries and Liveable Cities (ISILC), Victoria University, Australia. Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Abstract: This PhD via creative work comprises an exegesis (30%) and accompanying novel, Fan Fatale (70%), which seek to contribute a creative and considered representation of some women who are fans of elite male sports, Australian Rules football in particular. Fictional representations of Australian Rules football are rare. At the time of submission of this thesis, only three such works were found that are written by women aimed to an older readership. This project adds to this underrepresented space for women writing on, and contributing their experiences to, the culture of men’s football. The exegesis and novel creatively addresses the research question of how female fans relate to other women in the sports fan space through concepts of gender bias, performance, and social surveillance. Applying the lens of autoethnography as the primary methodology to examine these notions further allows a deeper, reflexive engagement with the research, to explore how damaging these performances can be for the relationships women can have to other women. In producing this exegesis and accompanying novel, this PhD thesis contributes a new and creative way to explore the gendered complications that surround the sports fan space for women. My novel, Fan Fatale, provides a narrative which raises questions about the complicit positions women can sometimes occupy in the name of fandom and conformity to expected gendered norms. -

Read, Ph. D., Dean, Graduate School May, 2013 i Abstract A centenarian Basque soccer club, Athletic Club (Bilbao) is the ethnographic locus of this dissertation. From a center of the Industrial Revolution, a major European port of capitalism and the birthplace of Basque nationalism and political violence, Bilbao turned into a post-Fordist paradigm of globalization and gentrification. Beyond traditional axes of identification that create social divisions, what unites Basques in Bizkaia province is a soccer team with a philosophy unique in the world of professional sports: Athletic only recruits local Basque players. Playing local becomes an important source of subjectivization and collective identity in one of the best soccer leagues (Spanish) of the most globalized game of the world. This dissertation takes soccer for a cultural performance that reveals relevant anthropological and sociological information about Bilbao, the province of Bizkaia, and the Basques. Early in the twentieth century, soccer was established as the hegemonic sports culture in Spain and in the Basque Country; it has become a multi- billion business, and it serves as a powerful political apparatus and symbolic capital. -

Sports fans use new media to watch games, discuss sports transactions, form fan-based communities, and secure minutiae about their favorite players and teams. Never before have fans known so much about athletes, whether that happens via Twitter feeds, fan sites, or blogs, and never before have the lines between producer, consumer, enactor, fan and athlete been more blurred.The internet has made virtually everything available for sports media consumption; it has also made under- standing sports media substantially more complex. The Routledge Handbook of Sport and New Media is the most comprehensive and in-depth study of the impact of new media in sport ever published. Journal of Research on Women and Gender March 1, 2010 Sports reporting and gender: Women journalists who broke the locker room barrier Tracy Everbach and Laura Matysiak, University of North Texas In 1978, a Sports Illustrated journalist and her editors filed a civil rights lawsuit against Major League Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn simply so she could do her job. The journalist, Melissa Ludtke, wanted access to the New York Yankees‟ locker room so she could gather the same interview information her male counterparts reported. The legal tactic worked: The court in 1978 granted Ludtke an injunction after ruling that the Yankees‟ discriminated against her by barring her from the locker room because of her sex.1 The decision opened doors for female sports reporters. But it did not stop the sex discrimination. Twelve years later, players in the New England Patriots locker room sexually harassed Lisa Olson, a reporter for the Boston Herald, as she tried to interview them. The players verbally chastised her and held their genitals near her face. Afterward, media coverage spurred a public debate about whether female sports journalists belonged in male locker rooms. The Patriots‟ owner, Victor Kiam, publicly called Olson a “classic bitch.”2 Some in the sports community dubbed her a “looker,” accusing her of wanting to be in the locker room to see naked men.3 This study, conducted three decades after the ruling involving Ludtke, examines through their own words the experiences of female sports reporters who gained access to the locker room. It also asks how discrimination against female sports journalists has changed since 1978. -

Rather, the widespread emergence of female sports reporters can be traced to the 1920s, when gender-based notions about employment and physicality changed substantially. Those changes, together with a growing leisure class that demanded expanded newspaper coverage of athletic heroes, allowed as many as thirty-five female journalists to make inroads as sports reporters at major metropolitan newspapers during the 1920s. Among these reporters were the New York Herald Tribune’s Margaret Goss, one of several newspaperwomen whose writing focused on female athletes; the Minneapolis Tribune’s Lorena Hickok, whose coverage of a male sports team distinguished her from virtually all of her female sports writing peers; and the New York Telegram’s Jane Dixon, whose reports on boxing and other sports from a so-called “woman’s angle” were representative of the way most women cracked the male-dominated field of sports journalism. -

CSJ‐08‐0004.0 New England Cable News and the Terry Glenn Story In 1999, New England Cable News (NECN) was one of the largest local news networks in the country, reaching more than 2 million homes in five states. NECN’s main studio was in Newton, Massachusetts, and it had bureaus throughout New England, including one in the Boston Globe building. A 24-hour station, it ran mostly original programming: news updates, full-length newscasts, sports, weather, traffic, documentaries, lifestyle shows, and talk shows. For footage of national news events, NECN relied on an independent agreement with ABC NewsOne, which gave it access to ABC video. Defying critics who had doubted that it could survive in a crowded, competitive market, NECN in only seven years had carved out a niche between national cable news networks and local news broadcasts. It maintained weekly and monthly ratings that attracted advertisers and made it profitable. It had succeeded, observers said, by providing high-quality programming at a relatively low cost. Jim Thistle, then-director of Boston University’s broadcast journalism program and a former executive at Channel 5, told the Boston Globe: “It’s become the regional CNN. They’ve gone for content over flash. They’re doing longer stories, more politics, and live coverage of nonbreaking news—debates and things—that the others have forsaken.”1 Getting off the Ground NECN emerged as part of what the Columbia Journalism Review (CJR) called “a journalistic movement burgeoning across the country.”2 In the 1980s and 1990s, local and regional all-news channels sprung up in most major markets.
