Children's Horror, PG-13 and the Emergent Millennial Pre-Teen
Children Beware! Children’s horror, PG-13 and the emergent Millennial pre-teen Filipa Antunes A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies December 2015 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. Filipa Antunes “Children beware!” Abstract This thesis is a study of the children’s horror trend of the 1980s and 1990s focused on the transformation of the concepts of childhood and horror. Specifically, it discusses the segmentation of childhood to include the pre-teen demographic, which emerges as a distinct Millennial figure, and the ramifications of this social and cultural shift both on the horror genre and the entertainment industry more broadly, namely through the introduction of the deeply impactful PG-13 rating. The work thus adds to debates on children and horror, examining and questioning both sides: notions of suitability and protection of vulnerable audiences, as well as cultural definitions of the horror genre and the authority behind them. The thesis moreover challenges the reasons behind academic dismissal of these texts, pointing out their centrality to on-going discussions over childhood, particularly the pre-teen demographic, and suggesting a different approach to the -

Dissertations (2009 -). Paper 181. http://epublications.marquette.edu/dissertations_mu/181 A VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS IN HELL: YULETIDE GHOSTS AND NECESSARY PLEASURES IN THE AGE OF CAPITAL by Brandon Chitwood A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 2012 ABSTRACT A VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS IN HELL: YULETIDE GHOSTS AND NECESSARPLEASURES IN THE AGE OF CAPITAL Brandon Chitwood Marquette University, 2012 This dissertation explores how the cultural and literary development – one might argue, creation – of a specifically Victorian Christmas arose in response to social anxieties related to the expansion of industrial capitalism, Darwinian theories of evolution, and the increasingly problematic definition of the family during the nineteenth century in Britain. Using a Lacanian psychoanalytic lens, the dissertation explores how the liminal figure of the ghost pervades the literary narrativization of the Christmas holiday, and how such ghosts provided uncanny comforts to a reading public increasingly horrified by social, economic, and natural forces seemingly beyond their control. The dissertation argues that the success of the literary institution of Christmas as a necessary assurance of cultural pleasure in the face of social anxiety has made it perhaps the most long-lived of Victorian artifacts. Indeed, the importance of Christmas to our late capitalist present suggests post-modernity is not so far removed from Victorian sensibilities as we might suspect. -

Myers A Thesis in the Field of Anthropology and Archeology for the Degree of Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies Harvard University November 2011 © 2011 Heather M. Myers Abstract This study examines phenomena of live action zombie events in American culture. Throughout history cultures have used tales of horror to address their fears in safe environments, and we continue this trend today. The zombie however, goes beyond such horror tales moving off the screen into live action events that allow us to confront and disarm our modern fears. It is my belief that zombie themed live action events have arisen due to the zombie’s ability to adapt to, and serve as metaphors, for specific socio- cultural fears. These events allow participants to confront those fears in a more immediate and intimate manner than could previously be done by viewing zombie films. -
