• 3) on the Released Films (PDF)
    3) On the Released Films and Others ■ Changes of the Number of Released Films from 2001 to 2016 Until the beginning of the 2000s, the number of films released in Japan was between 600 and 650. Towards the end of the 2000s, the number rapidly increased. The number in 2004 was 649, in 2005 it was 731, and in 2006 it was 821, each year, increasing by close to 100. The following three years did not show much increase. Then, in 2010, the number was 716, which increased to 799 in 2011 and to 983 in 2012, again showing rapid hike. In 2014, the number reached to 1,184, followed by 1,136 in 2015, and 1,149 in 2016. Since 2013, the number has been more than 1,100 each year. The reasons behind these increases of the film production in Japan are: first, digitalization lowering the film production budget; second, the increase of film schools and film professional schools; and third, support for film production in the public sector being established. The number of screens also increased by close to 900 from 2,585 in 2001 to 3,472 in 2016. The multi-screen theaters with many screens need a number of films to fill their screening rooms, leading to the increase of imported films released as well as Japanese films released. However, the total attendance between 2001 and 2016 remained mostly unchanged, therefore, the attendance per film decreased from 219,498 in 2005 to 136,078 in 2014. Graph (left): Number of Films Released from 2001 to 2016 Graph (right): Attendance per Film from 2001 to 2016 Souce: Eiren’s “Japanese Film Industry Statistics” ■ Changes of the Box Office Income from 2001 to 2016 The year 2010 recorded the highest box office income since 2000 with 220,700 million yen.
