Stories of heroes. Sometimes we find among the greats of the Bible some gems, which are only a few verses long, but tell us so much. One of these stories is of Dorcas (Greek) or Tabitha (Aramaic or Hebrew equivalent). Her name means “Gazelle”. Dorcas lived in the seaport of Joppa. But tragedy strikes, and Dorcas gets ill and dies. Peter, who is not far away, is called to Joppa and when he arrives, we see the widows showing him everything Dorcas has made for them. Peter goes to the room she is laid out in and kneels and prays. He says: “Tabitha arise” and she wakes up. And many believed in the Lord after that. Historians recognize that Paul was one of the most important men in all of world history. It was largely through his ministry that the message of Christianity was brought to much of the urban society of the Roman Empire within one generation. To better appreciate Paul’s ministry and impact, read the Scriptures, consider and discuss the following questions: 1. We first meet Paul in Scripture when Stephen was being stoned (Acts 7:54-60). At that time he was then called Saul. What role did Saul have in Stephen’s stoning? What impression might the dying Stephen’s words and behavior have on Saul? 2. Though born in Tarsus in Asia Minor, Paul was raised in Jerusalem, where he was a student of the beloved Gamaliel. What was Gamaliel’s attitude to the new sect of Christians? Why might Saul’s attitude differ so markedly from his teacher (Acts 22:3; 5:34-39; cf. 8:3; 9:1-2)? 3. Saul was not seeking the Lord Jesus, but the Lord was seeking him and spoke to Saul as he was on his way to Damascus to further persecute the Christians (Acts 9:1-7). -

Yet if the total number of missing words were added up this is how much shorter the modern translations are than the King James Version. Is it a cause for concern if in over 175 instances the names of Christ are missing, or if the word “hell” is not found in the Old Testament, or if key doctrinal passages have been diminished? This year we are blessed to be studying the apostle Paul, we will be considering five important first principle topics and also will be dedicating one of our classes to a group oriented workshop where we will focus on putting the principles and lessons of Paul’s life into practice in our lives. Please remember that it is important to do a good job on your workbook and pre-camp assignments. Not only will this allow you to fully participate in all the many fun activities Manitoulin Youth Camp has to offer, but also will allow you to get a lot more out of the classes and take home lessons that will stick with you for a lifetime! In the event we can’t have Youth Camp this year all together up at Manitoulin due to the on- going health issue, we still recommend you complete the workbook to gain the spiritual benefits of getting to know better one of the most incredible characters in all the Bible, the apostle Paul. Easter 6 2017 Acts 8: 5-17 There is so much lovable material in the Acts of Apostles, fifth book in the New Testament. We hear it every Sunday in the Easter season as first reading. We mostly ignore it. Church officials have cut out the colorful material, thinking it trivial, an error I will now remedy. We shouldn’t be surprised at the book’s lovability. It was written by Luke the gentle physician, author of the third gospel. He was a real literary writer, adept in the creation of character. He is therefore like the Russian writer Chekhov who could be funny and poignant in the same story or play, and was also a medical doctor. When you examine someone dressed in a skimpy hospital gown for medical purposes, I suspect it is both touching and absurd. I often extol Luke’s unique contributions to the Jesus story (contrasting with dull, didactic approaches): he gives us the good Samaritan, prodigal son, penitent thief--brilliant characters—and, best of all, the Christmas story from Mary’s viewpoint, with the angels and shepherds. A sequel is always inferior to the original book (think of the attempt for Gone with the Wind). Acts is a sequel, yet has many delightful episodes. For example, the Christians are being persecuted and Peter is imprisoned. “Peter in chains” is Fr Peter’s preferred patron-saint story, grimly shackled as he is to school duties. An angel (what Chekhov makes a walk-on role, Luke makes an angel) comes through the prison walls at the silence of midnight, with a key (why would an angel need one?), releasing Peter from his cell, and leading him through the empty streets. -

How to Restart an Oracle: Politics, Propaganda, and the Oracle of Apollo at Didyma c.305-300 BCE The Sacred Spring at Didyma dried up when the Persians deported the Branchidae to central Asia at the conclusion of the Ionian revolt c.494. It remained barren throughout the fifth and most of the fourth centuries and thus prophecy did not flow. However, when Alexander the Great liberated Miletus in 334, the spring was reborn and with it returned the gift of prophecy. After nearly two centuries, the new oracle at Didyma was not the same as the old one. This begs the question, how does one restart an oracle? The usual account is that Alexander appointed a new priestess, who immediately predicted his victory over Persia and referred to him as a god. In the historical tradition, largely stemming from Callisthenes, the renewed oracle is thus linked to Alexander, but words are wind and tradition can be manipulated. There are issues with the canonical chronology: Miletus reverted briefly to Persian control in Alexander’s wake; the Branchidae, the hereditary priests, still lived in central Asia (Hammond 1998; Parke 1985); and, most tellingly, construction on a new temple did not start for another thirty years. In fact, the renewal of the oracle only appears after Seleucus, who supposedly received three favorable oracles in 334, found the original cult statue and returned it to Miletus (Paus. 1.16.3). In the satiric account of the prophet Alexander, Lucian of Samosata declares the oracles of old, including Delphi, Delos, Claros, and Branchidae (Didyma), became wealthy by exploiting the credulity and fears of wealthy tyrants (8). -
