The Estate of the Straßertal Winery Waldschütz The Estate of the Straßertal Winery Waldschütz Since 4 generations the secret of wine-making will be given from father to son. The Winery Waldschütz is situated in Elsarn, at the south slops of the Manhartsberg, the beginning of the wine region Kamptal. The landscape of the river Kamp is responsible for the name of the wine region. It is one of the most fascinating areas for wine in Austria. Since 1994 Reinhard Waldschütz is the owner and winemaker in the winery. With a big input and together with his family he creates from year to year very nature-oriented, fruity, fresh wines, which are typical for the Kamptal. The products go from Grüner Veltliner (45%), Riesling (17%), Zweigelt (15%), Sauvignon Blanc (8%), Chardonnay and Frühroter Veltliner Next Generation Markus Waldschütz After the successful graduation at the school for viticulture and winegrowing in Krems at the Danube (Austria) he did some practice in Styria (Winery Brolli) and in Lower Austria at the Winery Ott. He also did some international practice at famous wineries in California (Au Bon Climat) and in New Zealand (Nautilus Estate). Since the middle of the year 2010 he is back at the families winery. Because of his new experiences and knowledge, he brings new and fresh ideas into the old cellars. Reinhard Waldschütz Reinhard was one year at our neighbour in Gemarny (Rheinland Pfalz) for practice, when he was 17 years old. His mentor was a well- bred and family-sourced person. His maxim was, that only someone, who has an intact family life and a clear head, can make delicious wines. This words and the philosophy have influenced Reinhard. When he came back he produced wines with an extremly freshness, finesse and clarity – wines with charisma and emotions. Today his wife Martina and his son Markus support him everyday and everytime. the vineyards and the soil our best and biggest vineyard - „Stangl“ The soil of the vineyard „Stangl“ is perfect for Grüner Veltliner. The substance of the soil is basically Löss (or Loess). Löss is a clastic, predominantly silt-sized sediment, which is formed by the accumulation of wind-blown dust. one of the best vineyards for Riesling - „Wechselberg“ The mica-slate of the vineyard „Wechselberg“ is responsible for mineralic and typical Rieslings. DAC Districtus Austriae Controllatus With “Kamptal DAC” designated wines must have a minimum alcohol content from 12 to 12.5 percentage volume of alcohol, wines bearing the label “Kamptal DAC Reserve” must have 13% alcohol or more. “Kamptal DAC” wines are dry and made by Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. Wines of the category “Kamptal DAC Reserve” must boast, in addition to a pronounced regional and varietal flavour, a powerful stylishness and be dense and long on the finish. A subtle botrytis and wood tone is here – in contrast to “Kamptal DAC” – permissible and often desirable. Our DAC-wines Grüner Veltliner Straßertaler Kamptal DAC Grüner Veltliner Hasel Kamptal DAC Grüner Veltliner Stangl Kamptal DAC Grüner Veltliner Aturo Kamptal DAC Reserve Riesling Venesse Kamptal DAC Riesling Kamptal DAC Reserve Grüner Veltliner Rosengarten Best of Kamptal The Grüner Veltliner „Rosengarten“ is a new creation of Markus Waldschütz. The vineyard Rosengarten, is situated between the vineyard Wechselberg and the vineyard Stangl. The soil consists of a deep and bulky Loess. The old vines are planted on south slopes on terraces. The age of the vines is a distinctive quality criteria. The deep roots absorb the minerals and nutrition of the soil and give them back in the wine. The fermentation is very slow. The duration of the fermentation is between 6 to 8 weeks. The yeast was stirred till the end of summer. At the end of October 2013 Reinhard und Markus Waldschütz reached the first place with the Grüner Veltliner „Rosengarten“ 2012 in the category „best noble Grüner Veltliner from the Kamptal“ at the Kamptal Wine Trophy. quality in vineyard & cellar Working near to the nature in the vineyards makes fruity, fresh, pure wines with charisma. The quality checks in the vineyards - a low pruning in winter, thinning out and pinching out – are an important component. The number of vines is about 3.800 to 4.000 each each hectare. The height of the trunk is a little bit shorter, that we have more foliage. Harvesting is normally from September till November by hand. Every vineyard will be harvest two till three times. There will be two to four healthy and ripe grapes each vine for our premium products. After harvesting the grapes will be pressed very softly, that they don’t get any tannins. The fermentation is temperature controlled and in steel tanks. We prefer a slower fermentation about 5 weeks. Then the wine can “sleep” till February in the steel tanks. Before the wine get clear and filled in bottles, the wine will be filtered. awards Grüner Veltliner Hasel 90 pt. The fish population of the river comprised 9 species and was dominated by brown trout, which accounted for about 90% of total standing stock (200–250 kg/ha). In co-opera- tion with local fishermen, 1564 specimens of brown trout (2+, avg total length 331 mm, avg weight 402 g) were marked with visible implant elastomer tags and stocked in dif- ferent river sections. The response by fishermen about captured fish was used as data basis for the analysis. The total number of brown trout captured throughout the season was 2684. About 11% of the captured fish was tagged, but the proportion of tagged fish among the total num- ber of brown trout removed from the system (total length larger than the minimum land- ing size of 28 cm) was significantly higher (68%). At the end of the season 25.5% of the tagged fish had been captured and removed. The number of tagged brown trout in the total daily capture per fisherman steadily decreased from 1.3 in April to 0.5 in August and 0 in October.

Summary In 1999 Lower Austria was the first time completely and systematically sur- veyed for the presence of otters. This was done by mapping spraints in 10 to 10 kilometres squares.

A FIRST ANALYSIS OF THE FLOOD EVENTS OF AUGUST 2002 IN LOWER AUSTRIA BY USING A HYDRODYNAMIC MODEL MICHAEL TRITTHART1, PETER MILBRADT2 1Institute of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Water Resources Management Vienna University of Technology Karlsplatz 13, 1040 Vienna, Austria TEL +43 1 58801 22301, FAX +43 1 58801 22399 e-mail: [email protected] 2Institute of Computer Science in Civil Engineering University of Hannover Am Kleinen Felde 30, 30167 Hannover, Germany TEL +49 511 762 5981, FAX +49 511 762 4756 e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Getting an overview of the general situation is very often the first step in an engineering approach towards the analysis of a flood event. If little is known a priori about the terrain, the flow directions and flow conditions, a detailed analysis can only be performed by investing large amounts of money and time to gather the required data in a first step. However, for the investigation of a larger area of interest, this detail is often not necessary and delays the delivery of results to the contracting authority. The paper shows that exactness of the digital terrain model and detailed surface roughness information is not always required in the hydrodynamic modelling of a larger area, by analysing the August 2002 flooding at the rivers Danube and Kamp in Lower Austria. Simulation is performed with a two-dimensional finite element model based on the shallow water equations. The results are compared to aerial views that were made at the peak of the flood event and show a good conformity with reality in large parts of the area of interest.
