Wissner Montclair State University No time like the past: Hearing nostalgia in The Twilight Zone Abstract Keywords One of Rod Serling’s favourite topics of exploration in The Twilight Zone (1959–64) Twilight Zone is nostalgia, which pervaded many of the episodes of the series. Although Serling Rod Serling himself often looked back upon the past wishing to regain it, he did, however, under- nostalgia stand that we often see things looking back that were not there and that the past is CBS often idealized. Like Serling, many ageing characters in The Twilight Zone often sentimentality look back or travel to the past to reclaim what they had lost. While this is a perva- stock music sive theme in the plots, in these episodes the music which accompanies the scores depict the reality of the past, showing that it is not as wonderful as the charac- ter imagined. Often, music from these various situations is reused within the same context, allowing for a stock music collection of music of nostalgia from the series. This article discusses the music of nostalgia in The Twilight Zone and the ways in which the music depicts the reality of the harshness of the past. By feeding into their own longing for the reclamation of the past, the writers and composers of these episodes remind us that what we remember is not always what was there. -

Preface With some hesitation at CBS, Cayuga Productions continued Twilight Zone for what would be its last season, with a thirty-six episode pipeline – a larger count than had been seen since its first year. Producer Bert Granet, who began producing in the previous season, was soon replaced by William Froug as he moved on to other projects. The fifth season has always been considered the weakest and, as one reviewer stated, “undisputably the worst.” Harsh criticism. The lopsidedness of Seasons 4 and 5 – with a smattering of episodes that egregiously deviated from the TZ mold, made for a series much-changed from the one everyone had come to know. A possible reason for this was an abundance of rather disdainful or at least less-likeable characters. Most were simply too hard to warm up to, or at the very least, identify with. But it wasn’t just TZ that was changing. Television was no longer as new a medium. “It was a period of great ferment,” said George Clayton Johnson. By 1963, the idyllic world of the 1950s was disappearing by the day. More grittily realistic and reality-based TV shows were imminent, as per the viewing audience’s demand and it was only a matter of time before the curtain came down on the kinds of shows everyone grew to love in the 50s. -

ROD SERLING’S THE TWILIGHT ZONE di Fabio Giovannini “C’è una quinta dimensione, oltre a quelle conosciute dall’uomo: è una dimensione grande come lo spazio e smisurata come l’infinito, è a mezza strada fra la luce e l’ombra, fra la scienza e la superstizione, fra la sommità delle cognizioni dell’Uomo ed il fondo dei suoi smarrimenti. È la dimensione della fantasia, è una zona che noi chiamiamo: ‘Il confine della realtà’. Dal 1959 milioni di schermi televisivi hanno trasmesso queste parole introduttive per una serie di telefilm che prometteva di condurre lo spettatore nella “quinta dimensione”. Le pronunciava, almeno nella versione originale americana, un serio personaggio dal naso schiacciato, Rod Serling. Nel 1959, quando iniziò The Twilight zone, era un personaggio del tutto sconosciuto, ma dopo un solo anno gli americani riconoscevano immediatamente la voce e i tratti di questo ospite che accompagnava nel territorio tra la luce e le tenebre, tra la scienza e la superstizione. Rod Serling in Italia non ha avuto alcuna fama, ma le sue parole “introduttive” sono egualmente entrate nelle tranquille case del bel- paese, per qualche anno. Le persone normali di Ai confini della realtà sempre precipitate in situazioni straordinarie, erano cesellate sul modello del cittadino medio statunitense, ma anche l’uomo comune italiano poteva identificarsi nelle fobie umane portate agli eccessi dall’abile Rod Serling. Twilight Zone (letteralmente la zona del crepuscolo) il serial televisivo che in Italia è stato trasmesso dalla RAI all’inizio degli anni Sessanta con il titolo Ai confini della realtà è stata la più lunga serie Tv di argomento fantastico prodotta negli Stati Uniti, se si eccettua la soap-opera Dark Shadows (le avventure del vampiro buono Barnabas Collins). -

It is a truism to write that the last few months have been ‘interesting’, with what started as a sniffle in Wuhan coming to define a year, and we suspect, the decade ahead. Likewise, as you would expect, the raptures caused by the pandemic have impacted on how we see and write about the world around us. In the early days of the ‘pandemic’ in Siem Reap, as schools closed—the sight of cycling white shirts disappearing from the morning streets—businesses shuttered and family and friends left for (presumably) safer shores, HOWL chose to dedicate a page of its website to poetic and narrative expressions of our new time. In the months that followed we received pieces from fields afar: from the distance lands of France and Panama, the closer conurbations and plains of Japan and New Zealand, and of course from our own Cambodia home. -

From the Inner Mind to The Outer Limits Retrospective by Dr. John L. Flynn Introduction “There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image; make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur, or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: There is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to THE OUTER LIMITS. .” Those few chilling words, when first heard on September 16, 1963, introduced what many consider the best anthology series of its kind to American audiences. The three major networks produced few exceptional television shows during the decade of the Sixties, and even fewer ones with a science-fictional premise, yet widespread acclaim for The Outer Limits has continued more than thirty years after its untimely cancellation. Like its predecessors, including Tales of Tomorrow, Science Fiction Theatre and The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits offered some bewitching excursions into the realm of science fiction; but it also journeyed beyond the limitless regions of time and space into the human soul. Nearly everyone who remembers the series fondly recalls the monsters that appeared in their living rooms week after week. -

Extracting and comparing perceived silence and tranquillity in the English Lake District Chesnokova, Olga ; Taylor, Joanna E ; Gregory, Ian N ; Purves, Ross S Abstract: We analyse silence and tranquillity in historical and contemporary corpora to understand ways landscapes were—and are—perceived in the Lake District National Park in England. Through macro and microreading we develop a taxonomy of aural experiences, and explore how changes to categories of silence from our taxonomy—for instance, the overall decline in mentions of absolute silence—provide clues to changes in the landscape and soundscape of the Lake District. Modern authors often contrast silence with anthropogenic sounds, while historical authors adhere to a cultural construction where the Lake District is presented as a tranquil area by ignoring industrial sounds. Using sentiment analysis we show that silence and tranquil sounds in our corpora are, as a whole, more positively associated than random text from the corpora, with this difference being especially marked in contemporary descriptions. Focusing closely on individual texts allows us to illustrate how this increased positivity can be related to the emergence of silence and tranquillity as valuable components of landscape. Mapping our corpora confirmed the influence of Wordsworth’s writing on descriptions of silence; and revealed the co-location of pockets of tranquillity near to transport arteries in contemporary descriptions.
