Europa 2017 "Castles"

GREAT BRITAIN is back in the Europa game with a nice set of stamps featuring Windsor castle, issued 15 February 2017. As is their wont, however, only one of the stamps bears the Europa logo. The complete set is shown below, in its presen- tation pack of 2 se-tenant rows of 3 stamps each. All of the stamps in the set depict various views of Windsor Castle. The one marked Europa is shown at the right.

Centenary of the Lady of Fatima Joint Issue

The year 2017 marks the cen- tenary of the apparition of the Blessed Mother to three young children in a field just north of the Portuguese village of Fatima. To mark the occasion, these four countries issued stamps of iden- tical design with the centennial logo, as shown at the right.

The special occasion will also be marked by a visit to Fatima by the Holy Father, Pope Francis I on 12-13 May. As might be expected, Portugal publicized this event with another philatelic tribute, viz. a sheet of four stamps, which also bears the centennial logo. The sheet is shown to the right. While not part of the joint issue, it is an obvious companion piece.

Speaking of companion pieces, Fatima was also part of the “Shrines of Europe” joint issue of 2016 (cf. EN# 435- 15ff).

On 13 May 1917 the Virgin Mary appeared for the first time above a small oak tree before three young girls (ages 10, 9 and 7) in the Cova da Iria Valley close to the Portuguese city of Fatima.

She was clothed in a bright white robe. She told the children that she was coming from Heaven and that she wanted them to come to that place for the next six months on the 13th day of the month, during which time she revealed three secrets of penance and love.

A procession of the Statue of Our Lady of Fatima is de- picted in the joint issue miniature sheet. There is the logo of the 100th anniversary in the corner and the symbols of Fatima below it: the crown of the statue of the Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Heart of the Virgin Mary, the Holy Rosary and the oak tree where the Vir- gin Mary appeared. — excerpted from Slovakia Post MAY-JUNE 2017 439-10

AUSTRIA

Austria issued one stamp that is listed in the D’Urso Catalogue as a 1958 Europa set. I present it only briefly here because at the time, Austria was neither a member of the ECSC nor was the 1958 common design used. The Scott Catalogue states that the theme of the stamp is the “Idea of a United Europe. At best, I believe that the Austrian stamp is a “sympathy” issue and not a true 1958 Europa stamp.

The Austria stamp is denominated at 2.40 Sh. It is printed in green.

The stamp was designed by Oskar Spitzer and engraved by Rudolph Toth. The stamp was re- cess printed on un-watermarked paper, perforated 14¼ x 14¾ by the Österreichische Staatsdrukerei, Vienna in sheets of 50 stamps. 3,000,000 stamps were printed.

The D’Urso Catalogue assigned the number 32 to the stamp. In addition to the complete set of 1 stamp, the D’Urso Catalogue lists blocks of 4 stamps. D’Urso does not list any varieties for the stamp.

First day covers were also produced for this issue. According to the D’Urso Catalogue, the num- ber T28 is assigned to the first day cancel. The cancel, according to D’Urso is known with check num- bers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 (32A).

Finally, maximum cards with the same cancel and check numbers were also prepared for this issue (32B).

TURKEY

Turkey issued two stamps that are listed in the D’Urso Catalogue as a 1958 Europa set. I pre- sent it only briefly here because at the time, Turkey was neither a member of the ECSC nor was the common design used . The Scott Catalogue states that the theme of the stamp are “Industry” (25k) and “Symbolizing New Europe” (40k). At best, I believe that the Turkish stamps are a “sympathy” is- sue and not a true 1958 Europa stamp set.

The Turkish stamps are denominated at 25k and 40k The 25k is printed in violet and dull pink and the 40k stamp is printed in ultramarine and bright ultramarine.

The stamps were designed by Gevher Bozkurt. The stamps were offset printed on un- watermarked paper, perforated 10¾ x 10¾ by Güzel Sanatlar Matbaasi, Istanbul in sheets of 50 stamps. 4,000,000 complete sets of stamps were printed.

The D’Urso Catalogue assigned the number 48 and 49 to the stamps.

In addition to the complete set of 2 stamps, the D’Urso Catalogue lists blocks of 4 stamps. D’Urso lists a single variety for the 25k stamp which can be found imperforate at the left (48A).

D’Urso does not indicate that any first day covers or maximum cards were produced for this is- sue. However, I have seen them.

This listing is provided for the record and no further material will be illustrated.

The 1958 EUROPA Stamps — a Monograph by Steve Luster (cont’d)

The “Romanian Government in Exile” prepared stamps with the Europa 1958 common design with oth- er design elements as a parody of the Soviet Union eating up Europe. The purpose of this organization was to raise money from the sale of these (non)-philatelic items. The “stamps” also exist imperforate.

Editor’s Note: Steve’s monograph ends here, but a couple of things should be mentioned: 1) Romania-in-exile labels started in 1956 and continued yearly for well over a decade. 2) There are other such labels, from Croatia-in-exile and who knows where else.

This is the tenth and final excerpt from Steve’s monograph. The original is available for download from the Unit web- site under “Monographs.” ■ MAY-JUNE 2017 439-18 NEW ISSUES WITH Scott CATALOG NUMBERS - Don Smith

Don Smith’s many collecting interests include stamps of Napoleon. In reference to the St. Helena issue above he reports the following, taken from the Napoleon Study Unit's newsletter: Interestingly, the Napoleon (St. Helena) ss has a couple of design errors: 1) The French tricolor is shown flying over Longwood in the middle left vignette. The flag was prohibited to be flown on the island. 2) Middle right side is captioned "Death of Napoleon." Actually it’s from a sketch entitled "Opening the Coffin of Napo- leon" which happened 19 years after his death when the body was removed to to be entombed in Les Invalides. MAY-JUNE 2017 439-19
