Festivals and occasions have gone by, with everybody repenting how badly they went by. Birthdays and anniversaries couldn't be properly celebrated. Two Eids. An Onam. One Durga Puja. I am writing this letter on the last day of Durga Puja, and it doesn't feel like the most important Bengali festival has come to a close. Generally, the last day leaves you exhausted, depressed, withdrawals creep in. This year, it feels like any other day. Tomorrow, feels like any other day. But have we realised that the most important thing about festivals, is people? Without people, festivals mean nothing. Religious rituals were performed, but in empty temples, without friends and family. Ornate makeshift pandals were made for idols, but nobody was allowed inside. Friends could not catch up for lunches and dinners, no boisterous house parties, no pandal hopping, no dressing up. Religious rituals weren't enough. That should be our learning from this year for the future — the most important thing that truly matters, is human connection. his pandemic has led to interesting things. Many of Creating divisive lines between people won't lead to a happier future but us, who have been staying away from our families for rather — like this year — a lonelier one. over a decade and more, have come home to them. My These days, if there is one thing that I'd thank Instagram for, it’s dog videos. visits to my childhood home generally have been for I used to follow a bunch of dog accounts, much before the dog influencer about two weeks, twice a year, for the last 12 years. To trend started. Then, once that hit, and dog sketches became a rage — stay beyond that is new, and has been a tad unsettling. introducing a whole new vocabulary of social media lingo — I spiralled down The usual two weeks, would pass by like a speeding the rabbit hole, incessantly consuming dog content. I remember, there was a train, and it always used to be filled with pampering, time when I used to follow more than 75 dog accounts. Dog videos obviously Twith lots of entertainment, and lots of vacation things. Helping out with cause a spike in dopamine, but I also realised that I had started growing a household chores wasn't encouraged because I would be "taking a break". dependency on them. It was like getting a smoke after a stressful day. I would Two weeks, twice a year is also not enough to understand how my family infinitely scroll through videos, staring at cute, furry canines, laughing and members have grown, have changed, have cracked. These last four-five giggling. They lift bad moods, sure, but I started experiencing a low, like a months have felt like a reacquaintance. I have learned so much about sugar crash, when I would pine for a furry companion. Who knew dog videos each of them. They are different people, older, more understanding, could do that, right? Social media is truly evil in all forms. I clamped down on more impatient, more illogical, more warm. Two weeks twice a year, my weird habit, turned a blind eye to the ASMR trends and dog challenges, everybody is at their best behaviour. But now, we have had quarrels and and saw that I was finally not as addicted as I was becoming. Of course, I disagreements. They are also getting used to me being in their space. cleaned my follow list too. These days, I only follow two handles, Barked and Younger members of the family are getting used to another adult, another Woof Woof TV, for exceptionally curated content. They are mood lifters, sure, person who believes he knows better than them. Older people are getting but thankfully don’t cause any negative impact. And, I don’t use “cronch”, used to another younger person who believes he knows better than them. “mlerm”, and “bork” in regular conversations anymore. Egos flare. Personal spaces are encroached upon. Equations change. Un-take-backable things are said. Everybody is stressed these days. Everybody is tired and frustrated and exhausted. So, one doesn't know whether one should be retaliative, or compassionate. "Why is someone saying what they are saying" is such a nuanced question now. And, in the process, I am also figuring out so many things about myself. Patience is truly a virtue these days. Anybody with a stubborn family will agree. Our parents have been understanding us for so long, but no one teaches us SKY CHIEF CHRONOGRAPH how to understand them. It is something children need to learn on their own, I guess.
