Other world’s largest outdoor retailer crops ever, so it’s good to see that our work is paying off.” Over the course of the years, the Helles have never wavered from producing the best wool clip possible, even during the tough wool market years. Shear- ing takes place in March. They built their own shearing trailer equipped with their own shear- ing machines. Every fl eece is skirted on a skirting table and every fl eece is tested on the OFTA 2000, which is used to sort the clip into three lines. “The OFTA 2000 is a very effective machine for deter- mining micron,” said Helle, “but it also does a lot of other things like measure length, and gives us a really good mea- surement of comfort factor.” Their superfi ne clip is a 16 to 23 micron wool. The AAA line is anything fi ner than 19 micron that meets a specifi ed strength characteristic. Once all the 19-micron wool is pulled, the remainder of the clip is sorted on comfort factor and goes into the AA or A lines. “Some say they can’t wear wool because they’re allergic to it,” said Helle. “Well, you can’t be allergic to wool; it’s a natural protein, kind of like your fi ngernails, but it does cause some irrigation for some people with sensitive skin.” Based on their research and years of testing their own sheep, they’ve found that fi bers over 30 microns have a “prickle effect” on the skin. Thus, their AA line is a high comfort 19.5 to 20 micron line. All of it goes into their Duck- worth fi nished goods line. Helle explained that in the early 1990s essentially the entire textile industry was offshored to places such as China. The small framework of the textile industry that did remain was primarily a low margin business using cotton and synthetics. Graham Stewart, a Brit, had been working for seven years in China with outdoor clothing retailers such as Icebreaker, Patagonia and Ibex, using Aus- tralian wool. He agreed to bring his expertise back to the U.S. and partner with Helle and Ber- nthal. It’s a perfect setup. The Helle family produces the raw fi ber, Stewart handles manu- facturing and production into fi nished goods, and Bernthal does the branding and market- ing of the fi nished goods. The Duckworth name is actually the name of an old textile mill worker, which his partners deemed would make a great brand name. One of the nice things to do in Ruidoso while waiting for the ponies to perform is to play golf at Cree Meadows or, if you can wrangle a guest invita- tion, at the exclusive Alto course whose membership happens to be made up largely of affl uent Texans. It’s an extra pleasure bonus, getting good and wet in a summer shower on the fair- ways before getting soaked at the $15 combine window. Or you can rent a riding sta- ble horse and take a scenic trail ride. Last weekend I took the kids for such a jaunt. The lad at the stable put me on a bay completely insensitive to spur or bit. That was to be expected. What wasn’t expected was the action of a big roan assigned to my son Bobby. When I kicked my pony alongside Bobby to exclaim over the magnifi cent view of Sierra Blanca’s ski slopes, the roan promptly reached out and bit me on the forearm, hard. Extremely hard. “You might ought to warn other riders about that pet food my son rode this morning,” I remarked to the young man at the stable, showing him the tooth marks in my Texas skin. “He’s carnivorous.” “Hmm,” he said, obviously thinking about more important things. “I never heard of him chewin’ on nobody. What was you doin’ to him?” “Nothing,” I said. “It’s all my fault. I should have been combing his forelock with a ball peen hammer.” Maybe that roan horse, like those folks at Albuquerque, wants Texans to go home.
