Girard College Historical Collections Founder’s Hall, Girard College 2101 S. College Ave, Philadelphia PA 1921 Kathy Haas Director of Historical Resources [email protected]; 215-787-4434 The Girard College Historical Collections preserve and interprets historical materials associated with Stephen Girard and Girard College. Stephen Girard (1750 –1831) was a French-born, naturalized American, who made a fortune as a mariner, merchant, banker and landowner. He ran the fever hospital at Bush Hill during the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1793, saved the U.S. government from financial collapse during the War of 1812, and died as one of the wealthiest men in American history. In his will he bequeathed nearly his entire fortune to charity, including an endowment for establishing a boarding school for "poor, white, male" orphans in Philadelphia. Today Girard College is multi- racial and co-educational; it continues to serve academically capable students from families with limited financial resources. Stephen Girard willed his papers and possessions to the school he created; today this uniquely well-preserved collection of 500 objects and 100,000 pages of letters, ledgers, craftsman bills, maritime records, hospital records etc. gives insight not only into Girard but also into the world of early national Philadelphia. The papers segment of this collection is also available to researchers on microfilm at the American Philosophical Society. The Girard College Historical Collections also chronicle the history of the unprecedented school Girard endowed for disadvantaged youth and provide resources for the study of educational, architectural and Philadelphia history through tens of thousands of thousands of photographs, archival records, and objects.

  • Garland's Million: the Radical Experiment To
October 14, 2019 To: ABF Legal History Seminar From: John Fabian Witt Re: October 23 seminar Thanks so much for looking at my drafts and coming to my session! I’m thrilled to have been invited to Chicago. I am attaching chapters 5 and 8 from my book-in-progress, tentatively titled Garland’s Million: The Radical Experiment to Save American Democracy. The book is the story of an organization known informally as the Garland Fund or formally as the American Fund for Public Service: a philanthropic foundation established in 1922 to give money to liberal and left causes. The Fund figures prominently in the history of civil rights lawyering because of its role setting in motion the early stages of the NAACP’s litigation campaign that led a quarter-century later to Brown v. Board of Education. I hope you will be able to get some sense of the project from the crucial chapters I’ve attached here. These chapters come from Part 2 of the book. Part 1 focuses on Roger Baldwin, the founder of the ACLU and the principal energy behind the Fund. Part 2 (including the chapters here) focuses on James Weldon Johnson, who ran the NAACP during the 1920s and was a board member of the Fund. Parts 3 and 4 turn respectively to Elizabeth Gurley Flynn (a labor radical on the board) and Felix Frankfurter, who in the 1920s served as a key outside consultant and counsel to the Fund. To set the stage, readers have learned in Part 1 about Baldwin as a disillusioned reformer, who advocated progressive programs like the initiative and referendum only to see direct democracy produce a wave of white supremacist initiatives.

Today we are undertaking hearings concerning the Girard College and City Board of Trusts. These hearings are two-pronged. First aspect, of course, is that under the Will of Stephen Girard, the General Assembly was given the authority to examine books and records and papers of the trust of the Girard Will -- trustees of the Girard Will; and also under statute enacted by the General Assembly into law in the late 1800s, created the City Board of Trusts.

THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS RARE BOOK AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS DIVISION THE RADICAL PAMPHLET COLLECTION Finding aid prepared by David Kennaly Washington, D.C. - Library of Congress - 1995 LIBRARY OF CONGRESS RARE BOOK ANtI SPECIAL COLLECTIONS DIVISIONS RADICAL PAMPHLET COLLECTIONS The Radical Pamphlet Collection was acquired by the Library of Congress through purchase and exchange between 1977—81. Linear feet of shelf space occupied: 25 Number of items: Approx: 3465 Scope and Contents Note The Radical Pamphlet Collection spans the years 1870-1980 but is especially rich in the 1930-49 period. The collection includes pamphlets, newspapers, periodicals, broadsides, posters, cartoons, sheet music, and prints relating primarily to American communism, socialism, and anarchism. The largest part deals with the operations of the Communist Party, USA (CPUSA), its members, and various “front” organizations. Pamphlets chronicle the early development of the Party; the factional disputes of the 1920s between the Fosterites and the Lovestoneites; the Stalinization of the Party; the Popular Front; the united front against fascism; and the government investigation of the Communist Party in the post-World War Two period. Many of the pamphlets relate to the unsuccessful presidential campaigns of CP leaders Earl Browder and William Z. Foster. Earl Browder, party leader be—tween 1929—46, ran for President in 1936, 1940 and 1944; William Z. Foster, party leader between 1923—29, ran for President in 1928 and 1932. Pamphlets written by Browder and Foster in the l930s exemplify the Party’s desire to recruit the unemployed during the Great Depression by emphasizing social welfare programs and an isolationist foreign policy.

RUSSIA 1. HISTORICAL. The idea of Communism, which Webster defines as "Any theory or system of social organization involving common ownership of the agents of production, and some approach to equality in the distribution of the pro- ducts of industry," is not new. In 1776 Dr. Adam Weishaupt, a professor of law in a Bavarian college, founded the Order of the Illuminati with the aim of abolishing monarchy and all ordered government, private property, inheritance, patriotism, the family, and religion. The order spread rapidly tl :agh France, Italy and Germany, but was eventually exposed and driv- e :nderground. In 1789 the Jacobin Club, organized by Robespierre and ot a who had been affiliated with the Illuminati, did much to give so sa ,ainary a hue to the French Revolution and provide a pattern for the R ussian Bolsheviks some 130 years later. Undoubtedly influenced by Weishaupt, Jean Jacques Rousseau and ot' ers, Karl Marx and Freidrich Engels, two apostate young German Jews, produced the famous Communist Manifesto in 1848 as the platform of the Communist League, a German organization which later became inter- national.
