A Look at 2011 and a Plan for 2012 It is now more than a year since our last round of bargaining finished. And with another year to go before we start negotiations again, now is the perfect time to reflect and plan. In this magazine, we have a look at what we’ve achieved over the last two years. We also focus on what we can do in 2012 to improve things even further.

Our branch continues to grow at a rate of knots. We have new staff, officials and delegates on our team, bursting to contribute. But before we plunge in to the next 12 months, it’s worth thinking about all that we achieved together in 2011. Our industrial officer, Cheryl Baldwin, compiled this list.

David Hart - Contact at Waite I am David Hart, the Academic Programs Offi cer for the School of Agriculture, Food & Wine at the Waite Campus. I have worked for the school for almost 10 years and have a total of 17 years service at our University. I deal mostly with student related activities for the school and support both the Learning Teaching Committee and the Postgraduate Committee. I am the administrative contact for our Postgraduate and Honours students and coordinate the application and admission processes for new students. I also provide a broad range of services to the school executive that relate to Student & Teaching issues. I have been a Union member for 32 years and believe that it is only by collective bargaining that we can eff ectively maintain our conditions of service and competitive salary. I don’t think union membership should be compulsory, but if you are happy to accept the increases negotiated by our union then you should also be prepared to step up and support our Union in return. Individual workers have no power in today’s workplace, so add your voice.

Ryan O’Handley - Delegate at Roseworthy I am Ryan O’Handley, Senior Lecturer in Parasitology in the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at the Roseworthy Campus. I arrived at the University of Adelaide just over 2 years ago from Murdoch University, where I was a Senior Research Fellow and also an active member of the NTEU. I teach Veterinary Parasitology to both our Veterinary and Animal Science students, and I am in the midst of developing a new research program here in Veterinary Parasitology. I head the Parasitology section of the new Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, sit on the school Curriculum Committee and chair the campus Research Space and Infrastructure Committee. Outside of work I am heavily involved in , and I am the Australian National Under 20 coach and Head Coach for the Adelaide Adrenaline. I have been an NTEU member since arriving in in 2004. In addition to its valuable role in negotiation our collective agreement, I believe our union plays a central role in maintaining the academic freedom that is so vital within universities. The NTEU is more than just a means through which collective bargaining is conducted; it helps unite our university community. National Apology Day was declared in 1998 and is held on the 13th of February every year to acknowledge the impacts of government policies that allowed for the forced removal of Aboriginal children from their families. This year in Adelaide, members from a number of unions attended the Apology Day breakfast. Dylan Coleman and Jenni Caruso attended from our branch. The event was held at the Intercontinental Motel, and sponsored by Reconciliation South Australia Inc. The proceedings were opened by the Hon Robyn Layton, and the welcome to country by Jack Buckskin, both Co-chairs of Reconciliation South Australia.
