Women’s ice hockey is one of the fastest- growing sports in the world, and the fact that an IIHF women’s event is being hosted in Spain is a perfect example. Women have taken to ice hockey in unprecedented numbers since the early 1990s. As the IIHF is committed to promoting ice hockey around the world, it is very encou- raging that Jaca has offered to host this women’s tournament. It is our hope that this sport will continue to grow and offer plenty of action and excitement for hockey fans. I welcome the participating teams and I wish the best of luck to each country and to the host. I would also like to sincerely thank the Spanish Ice Sports Federation for hosting this championship. Let’s have some great hockey! PowerHealth e-Newsletter - Q2 2018 PowerHealth Leverage Leverage: to use (something) to maximum advantage Using Big Data to Improve Patient Experience Big data represents a rich resource with the potential to improve care, but for many this asset is being underutilised. Recently, Harvard Business Review compared hospitals to airlines and the operational complexities to keep costs low and create a decent profit. They explained how "used correctly, analytics tools can lower health care costs, reduce wait times, increase patient access, and unlock capacity with the infrastructure that’s already in place". It’s a great read to understand how to leverage your data asset. READ MORE... Benchmarking Efficiency Leverage: this month we want to highlight this very word by sharing some recent results from our Benchmarking Efficiency Group. An efficiency review project was conducted on a specific Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) within the W&C division of a large healthcare organisation. The purpose of the review was to explore how a Local Health Network (LHN) was performing against the National Efficient Price (NEP), with a view to discovering which drivers resulted in services being delivered above the NEP and identifying opportunities for improvement. Drilling down into the data via a process of analysis, alignment of costs, education and audit achieved a 1.1M turnaround for the DRG group through the identification of coding issues (revenue lost) and improved expenditure. Foster Care Association of Victoria Celebrating 20 years of supporting Victorian carers www.fcav.org.au Protecting Victoria‟s Vulnerable Children Inquiry The Protecting Victoria‟s Vulnerable Children Inquiry Report was tabled in state parliament on 28 February 2012 by the Minister for Community Services, the Hon Mary Wooldridge. Comprising 90 recommendations, and a further 20 „list of findings and matters for attention‟, the report is a comprehensive and robust document. It outlines all elements of the child protection and vulnerable children sector, the current state of play, and the changes needed to meet and improve our response as a sector, community and state to the needs of vulnerable children in Victoria. Upon release of the report, The Age newspaper highlighted the growing „cost of care‟ referred to in the report. The article, detailed below, featuring our own Vice President, Tracey Cocks, clearly illustrated the need for improved funding approaches for foster, kinship and permanent carers in Victoria. We highlight further key recommendations on pages 6 and 7. The cost of caring - $65,000 out of pocket Michelle Griffin, The Age, February 29, 2012 TRACEY Cocks knew it cost her more than she received from the state government to foster four young children, but she didn't realise just how much until the the state's inquiry asked her to calculate her out-of-pocket expenses. ''It was $65,000 a year,'' she says. ''After tax, after reimbursement. How are they going to get people to foster children if they realise they're going to be paying for it themselves?'' Ms Cocks and her partner took on their first foster child as a baby 5½ years ago, and now care for her three siblings also, ranging in age from nine to a baby.
