Fossil vertebrates an, Egelhoff fossil quarries in the local stratigraphy and show Egelhoff from these quarries have been the subject of a series of papers QL ,rry to be topographically higher. Published June 17, 1969 Price for this issue $1.50 MIOCENE AND PLIOCENE ARTIODACTYLS, TEXAS GULF COASTAL PLAIN THOMAS HUDSON PATTON1 SYNOPSIS: Describes 27 species of fossil artiodactyls from a series of vertically successive mammalian. assemblages in Miocene and Pliocene deposits of the Texas Gulf Coastal Plain and discusses their systematic positions. Among the new forms represented are two camel genera: Australocametus, the probable Aep!/cameZus ancestor, and Nothott/lopus, a very unusual member of the Proto- labis-Pliauchenia lineage. The Floridagulinae are now seen to have had a trans-Coastal Plain distribution extending in time from the middle Heming- fordian Garvin Gully Fauna through the Barstovian Cold Spring Fauna. The Gulf Coast species of the Synthetoceratinae are discussed and the phylogeny of the subfamily outlined. Evidence from this study indicates that the Gulf Coastal Plain constituted a distinct faunal province throughout most of the Tertiary. Whereas many striking similarities exist between the faunas of the Texas Coastal Plain and those of the Great Plains, several groups are true Gulf Coast autochthons. -

Hopkins Burrowing rodents are important ecosystem engineers in today's environments. The fossil record offers the opportunity to study patterns and processes in the evolution of the burrowing rodent guild through the Cenozoic. During the Miocene, this guild was very diverse, including numerous families ranging in ecology from semi-fossorial to subterranean. I use the emblematic family Mylagaulidae, a group of subterranean rodents, to test hypotheses of abiotic and biotic controls on mammalian evolution with the goal of better understanding turnover in the composition of the fossorial rodent guild in the Miocene of the Great Basin. -

This time period offers a rare chance to observe dramatic climatic changes, such as sudden warming trends. The site is sedimentologically and stratigraphically consistent with the Mascall Formation of the John Day Basin to the north and east of Hawk Rim. Hawk Rim preserves taxa such as canids Cynarctoides acridens and Paratomarctus temerarius, the felid Pseudaelurus skinneri, castorids Anchitheriomys and Monosaulax, tortoises and the remains of both cormorants and owls. -

Vertebrate Paleontology at the Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida: the Past 60 Years of Research and Education
VERTEBRATE PALEONTOLOGY AT THE FLORIDA MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA: THE PAST 60 YEARS OF RESEARCH AND EDUCATION Bruce J. MacFadden1 ABSTRACT This paper presents the history and development of the vertebrate paleontology (VP) program since its inception at the Florida State Museum (name changed to Florida Museum of Natural History in 1988) over the past 60 years. Given the rich and ubiquitous 40-million-year fossil record exposed in Florida and general public interest in extinct life, it is not surprising that paleontology has continued to be a cornerstone of the museum. The impact of two aspects of this program is highlighted; i.e., (1) the “formative decade” from 1956 to 1965; and (2) the development of the VP collection and related activities over the past 60 years. VP has benefitted greatly from dedicated and passionate people involved in this program, including curators, staff, undergraduates, volunteers, and 80 graduate students. Other topics covered in this history include leadership, infrastructure, research, education, and outreach. Outcomes have included a collection that has grown to almost a half million digitized specimens, more than 15 million dollars of grant-supported projects, active, year-round field work, about 400 peer-reviewed papers published, and innovative exhibitions and public programs. The unique identity of the VP program and its recognition among peers both nationally and internationally results from the positive influences of these foundational core and related activities over the past 60 years.
