FACULTY OF JURIDICAL SCIENCES COURSE:BALLB Semester –IV SUBJECT: SOCIOLOGY-III SUBJECT CODE:BAL-401 NAME OF FACULTY: DR.SHIV KUMAR TRIPATHI Lecture-21 Varna (Hinduism) Varṇa (Sanskrit: व셍ण, romanized: varṇa), a Sanskrit word with several meanings including type, order, colour or class,[1][2] was used to refer to social classes in Hindu texts like the Manusmriti.[1][3][4] These and other Hindu texts classified the society in principle into four varnas:[1][5] Brahmins: priests, scholars and teachers. Kshatriyas: rulers, warriors and administrators. [6] Vaishyas: agriculturalists and merchants. Shudras: laborers and service providers. Communities which belong to one of the four varnas or classes are called savarna or "caste Hindus". The Dalits and tribes who do not belong to any varna were called avarna.[7][8] This quadruple division is a form of social stratification, quite different from the more nuanced system Jātis which correspond to the European term "caste".[9] The varna system is discussed in Hindu texts, and understood as idealised human callings.[10][11] The concept is generally traced to the Purusha Sukta verse of the Rig Veda. The commentary on the Varna system in the Manusmriti is oft-cited.[12] Counter to these textual classifications, many Hindu texts and doctrines question and disagree with the Varna system of social classification.[13] Etymology and origins The Sanskrit term varna is derived from the root vṛ, meaning "to cover, to envelop, count, classify consider, describe or choose" (compare vṛtra).[14] The word appears -

Luigi sx A few years ago, my confreres (Xaverian Missionaries working in Bangladesh) requested that I conduct a four-day course on caste and untouchability. Probably, I benefited as much from teaching the course as my student-confreres did since the process helped me crystallize my ideas about Hinduism and the ramifications of certain aspects of this religion upon the cultures of the subcontinent. From time to time, I am invited to different places to deliver lectures on these two topics. I usually accept these invitations because I am convinced that those who would like to do something to change the miserable lot of so many poor people living in the Indian Subcontinent must be knowledgeable about the caste system and untouchability. People need to be aware of the negative effect and the impact of these two social evils regarding the abject misery and poverty of those who are at the bot- tom of the greater society. It seems that people living in the Indian Subcontinent , no matter which reli- gion they belong to, are still affected (consciously or unconsciously) by these as- pects of Hinduism that have seeped into other religions as well. In order to prepare myself for the task of lecturing (on caste and untoucha- bility), I read and studied many books, magazines and articles on these two evil institutions of Hinduism, which have affected the social life of most of the people living in the Indian Subcontinent. -

It focuses on the widespread practice of eating homemade lunches in the workplace, important for commuters to replenish mind and body with foods that embody their specific family backgrounds, in a society where religious, caste, class, and community markers comprise complex dietary regimes. Eating such charged substances in the office canteen was essential in reproducing selfhood and social distinction within Mumbai’s cosmopolitan environment. -

THE VISHNU PURANA The Vishnu Purana has twenty-three thousand shlokas. Skanda Purana has eighty-one thousand shloka and Markandeya Purana only nine thousand. The Vishnu Purana also has six major sections or amshas, although the last of these is really short. Maitreya and Parashara Once the sage Maitreya came to the sage Parashara and wanted to know about the creation of the universe. And this is what Parashara told him. In the beginning the universe was full of water. But in that water there emerged a huge egg (anda) that was round like a water-bubble. The egg became bigger and bigger and inside the egg there was Vishnu. This egg was called Brahmanda. And inside Brahmanda there were the mountains and the land, the oceans and the seas, the gods, demons and humans and the stars. On all sides, the egg was surrounded by water, fire, wind, the sky and the elements. Inside the egg, Vishnu adopted the form of Brahma and proceeded to create the universe. When the universe is to be destroyed, it is Vishnu again who adopts the form of Shiva and performs the act of destruction. Let us therefore salute the great god Vishnu. There are four yugas or eras. These are called krita (or satya), treta, dvapara and kali. Krita era consists of four thousand years, treta of three thousand, dvapara of two thousand and kali of one thousand. All the four eras thus pass in ten thousand. And when all the four eras have passed one thousand times each, that is merely one day for Brahma. -

College for Women, Nagpur, Maharashtra, India Abstract: Dalit autobiographies have been written by marginalized people belonging to the grass roots of the Indian society. They are at the lowest rung of the Indian social hierarchy. Narendra Jadhav’s Outcaste: A Memoir is one of the most well known and, widely translated Dalit autobiography. It is a testament of Ambedkarite movement in Maharashtra and a socio-cultural- historical document of Dalit protest, revolt, acceptance, rejection and Dalit consciousness. Many research papers have been written highlighting the poverty, hunger, exploitation, discrimination, violation of human rights, atrocities and physical violence endured by the protagonist and his family members and how the protagonist protested and revolted against it seeking human status and equality in the society. Yet this Dalit autobiography has never been analyzed as a literary text. This paper is a humble effort to enlist, analyze and showcase the literary and aesthetic merits of the oeuvre. Keywords: Dalit, Dalit Autobiography, Similes, Metaphors, Deixis, Reality Effect, Bardic Effect, Outcaste: A Memoir is written by Dr. Narendra Jadhav. It occupies a prominent place in Dalit literature and has been translated into many languages worldwide. It is an authentic document of protest, revolt, Dalit consciousness, Ambedkarite Movement and philosophy. It has proved its merits on the touchstone of tenets of Dalit literarure-revolt, Vedana and Vidroha, acceptance and rejection. -

He can be accessed online at [email protected]. Abstract This paper is an attempt to understand the intersected nature of the appropriation of the spaces, events and acts of oppressed castes (and gender) in the ‗Progressive‘ Sindhi short stories and in everyday politics. I specifically discuss the three popular short stories that are projected as having exceptional emancipatory potential for the Dalits and women. Mounting the Ambedkarian critique of the Progressive writers‘ political agenda premised on Sindhi nationalism, I interrogate the short-story writer‘s caste location and the content of short stories having empirical consequences for Dalit (women) in everyday life. I contend that even these seemingly pro-Dalit and pro-woman fictional narratives and their empirical interpretations, do not pass the test of Ambedkarian epistemology as they do not show any commitment to the annihilation of caste/casteism and gender disparities, and rather suggest objectification of Dalit bodies instead of emancipation through Dalit agency. Although the appropriated projection of facts in fiction may temporarily invoke Ashrafia morality to confront casteism, yet they are largely apologetic in their tenor, and eventually turn out to be counterproductive. The stories, being primarily fashioned in Ashrafia-Savarna narrative, facilitate the Ashrafia-Savarna elite to 2 appropriate heroes, histories or events and spaces of Dalits to sustain their social domination over Dalits. -

Nor can it be said to deal with a trivial problem. The general proposition that the social organization of the Indo-Aryans was based on the theory of Chaturvarnya and that Chaturvarnya means division of society into four classes—Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (soldiers),Vaishyas (traders) and Shudras (menials) does not convey any idea of the real nature of the problem of the Shudras nor of its magnitude.
