VOLUME III NO. 21 10 OCTOBER 1944 FRANCE; THE AMERICAN FIRST ARMY HAS REDUCED THE ESCAPE GAP OUT OF AACHEN TO JUST OVER A MILE, FIRST ARMY TROOPS ARE DRIVING FOR A LINK UP JUST EAST OF THE CITY. THE GERMANS ARE BITTERLY CONTESTING THE AMERICAN ADVANCE AND TODAY 'THE YANKS WERE HELD TO RELATIVELY SMALL GAINS OF SEVERAL HUNDRED YARDS. , SOUTHEAST OF AACHEN, AMERICAN TROOPS HAVE PUSHED AHEAD FOR SLIGHT GAINS, CORRESPONDENTS SAID THIS EVENING THAT THE NAZIS HOLDING OUT IN AACHEN HAD BEEN GIVEN AN ULTIMATUM THAT IF THEY DIDN 'T SUR• RENDER BY MORNING THE CITY WOULD BE DESTROYED.
