  • Authenticity in Electronic Dance Music in Serbia at the Turn of the Centuries
The Other by Itself: Authenticity in electronic dance music in Serbia at the turn of the centuries Inaugural dissertation submitted to attain the academic degree of Dr phil., to Department 07 – History and Cultural Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz Irina Maksimović Belgrade Mainz 2016 Supervisor: Co-supervisor: Date of oral examination: May 10th 2017 Abstract Electronic dance music (shortly EDM) in Serbia was an authentic phenomenon of popular culture whose development went hand in hand with a socio-political situation in the country during the 1990s. After the disintegration of Yugoslavia in 1991 to the moment of the official end of communism in 2000, Serbia was experiencing turbulent situations. On one hand, it was one of the most difficult periods in contemporary history of the country. On the other – it was one of the most original. In that period, EDM officially made its entrance upon the stage of popular culture and began shaping the new scene. My explanation sheds light on the fact that a specific space and a particular time allow the authenticity of transposing a certain phenomenon from one context to another. Transposition of worldwide EDM culture in local environment in Serbia resulted in scene development during the 1990s, interesting DJ tracks and live performances. The other authenticity is the concept that led me to research. This concept is mostly inspired by the book “Death of the Image” by philosopher Milorad Belančić, who says that the image today is moved to the level of new screen and digital spaces. The other authenticity offers another interpretation of a work, or an event, while the criterion by which certain phenomena, based on pre-existing material can be noted is to be different, to stand out by their specificity in a new context.

  • Social Attitudes, Media Objectivity, and Frequency of Informing As Predictors of COVID-19 Conspiracy Beliefs
Does it matter what you watch? Social attitudes, media objectivity, and frequency of informing as predictors of COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs Tijana Karić1, Janko Međedović Institute of Criminological and Sociological Research, Belgrade THIS VERSION HAS NOT BEEN PEER-REVIWED. In this study, we hypothesized that traditionalist social attitudes (conservatism, religiousness, and authoritarianism) significantly predict COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs, as well as conspiracy mentality in general. We also hypothesized that these relationships are mediated by the objectivity of the media individuals inform themselves from, and the frequency of informing. The sample consisted of 341 participants from Serbia (mean age 33.51 years), 40.5% women. We measured authoritarianism, social conservatism, religiousness, conspiracy mentality, media objectivity, frequency of informing, and two sets of COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs: Harmless virus and Hiding information. The results revealed that conservatism predicts all three outcome variables, authoritarianism only COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs, and religiousness only beliefs that the virus is harmless. Media objectivity does not mediate these relationships. Frequency of informing is a significant mediator only in a relationship between authoritarianism and all outcome variables, indicating that the role of seeking more information is in the function of reducing threat perceived by more authoritarian individuals. Additionally, the study reveals that media objectivity 1 [email protected] may not be important for reducing conspiracy beliefs, but rather media credibility. These potential explanations should be further explored. Keywords: COVID-19, authoritarianism, conservatism, religiousness, media Word count: 6761 Introduction The importance of different aspects of media reporting has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. The so-called infodemic (WHO, 2020) has accompanied this world event since the very beginning (Bridgman et al., 2020).

  • CLOSER to OWNERS THAN to JOURNALISTS 2 17 Either Way, of in Influenced Thedirection That Could Meaning Stillbe They Twoprofessional of Conduct
THE EDITORS’ ROLE IN MEDIA INTEGRITY PROTECTION IN SERBIA CLOSER TO OWNERS THAN TO JOURNALISTS by JOVANKA MATIĆ INTRODUCTION Serbian journalism has been caught in a process of economic and profes- sional deterioration for so long that the poor economic status of journalists is no longer considered to be of crucial importance for the explanation of its pe- culiarities. The chaotic development of the media industry in an unregulated market, with the state as a powerful, arbitrary and non-transparent source of funding, coupled with the dominance of commercial motives on the part of new media owners has turned the media into a means of promotion, propagan- da, blackmail and public lynching, instead of a source of information, a place of social dialogue and a means of scrutiny of the government. Recent changes in the media scene, prompted by three new media laws adopted in 2014, have fallen far below expectations. They had no effect on the dysfunctional media market and left intact the mechanisms of soft censorship, which enable instrumentalisation of the media for the particular agendas of the funding sources (Hrvatin and Petković 2016). The numerous, steady negative developments in the media field have stim- ulated discussion on the need for a re-professionalisation of journalism. This paper deals with the issue of the role of editors-in-chief in the effort towards a re-affirmation of ethical journalism in the public interest. Are editors-in-chief important today? Could they be considered an important resource in the strug- gle for the protection of media integrity, in the context of economic crisis, the media’s increasing dependence on state funds, the lack of a culture of public accountability and the persistence of journalistic grievances which signal that working conditions have never been worse? In the socialist era, it was very important who the editors-in-chief of the media were.
