The Astros’ Sign-Stealing Scandal Major League Baseball (MLB) fosters an extremely competitive environment. Tens of millions of dollars in salary (and endorsements) can hang in the balance, depending on whether a player performs well or poorly. Likewise, hundreds of millions of dollars of value are at stake for the owners as teams vie for World Series glory. Plus, fans, players and owners just want their team to win. And everyone hates to lose! It is no surprise, then, that the history of big-time baseball is dotted with cheating scandals ranging from the Black Sox scandal of 1919 (“Say it ain’t so, Joe!”), to Gaylord Perry’s spitter, to the corked bats of Albert Belle and Sammy Sosa, to the widespread use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) in the 1990s and early 2000s. Now, the Houston Astros have joined this inglorious list. Catchers signal to pitchers which type of pitch to throw, typically by holding down a certain number of fingers on their non-gloved hand between their legs as they crouch behind the plate. It is typically not as simple as just one finger for a fastball and two for a curve, but not a lot more complicated than that. In September 2016, an Astros intern named Derek Vigoa gave a PowerPoint presentation to general manager Jeff Luhnow that featured an Excel-based application that was programmed with an algorithm. The algorithm was designed to (and could) decode the pitching signs that opposing teams’ catchers flashed to their pitchers. The Astros called it “Codebreaker.” One Astros employee referred to the sign- stealing system that evolved as the “dark arts.”1 MLB rules allowed a runner standing on second base to steal signs and relay them to the batter, but the MLB rules strictly forbade using electronic means to decipher signs. -

Robinson's breaking of the color line had a social significance which transcended the game of baseball. At the season opener at Shea Stadium the President of the United States recognized Jackie Robinson, and the Acting Commissioner of Baseball retired Jackie's number for all of major league baseball. Radio and TV programs have examined the events of 1947, social commentators have recalled Robinson's contributions to American life, and baseball historians have paid their tributes to this remarkable man. At baseball's annual All-Star game next week in Cleveland, the man who broke the color line in the American League and in Cleveland will finally receive some of the recognition he deserves. -

Bryant, taken by the Cubs as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2013 Draft after the Astros passed on him with the top pick, clubbed a two-run homer in the fifth inning to back seven scoreless from Jon Lester to send the Cubs to a 2-0 win over the Astros, lowering Chicago's magic number to 7. "It still feels like we're just right in the middle of the season, but we feel like we're getting to baseball that actually really matters," Bryant said. "Anything can happen in the full season, so you've got to get there first, and we certainly feel like we're playing really good baseball right now." The Astros have lost three in a row and remain 2 1/2 games back in the race for the second American League Wild Card spot behind both the Orioles and Tigers, who drew even on Friday with Detroit's 4-3 win over Baltimore. "We did have some chances," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "Lester's a good pitcher and he has a way of finding himself out of these jams. We did get the leadoff runner on about half the innings against Lester but couldn't quite get the big hit. -

What he was saying was that he used to live in a world of limitations created by over-simplified ideas. But as he got older he came to appreciate the unlimited possibilities of imagination. We may be on the verge of re-imagining what is possible in golf. Recently, Jim Furyk shot the first 58 on the PGA Tour. And over the weekend, In Gee Chun broke the major-championship scoring record in relation to par for men and women at Evian by finishing at 21 under par. Are they the Roger Bannister of golf? After the Englishman broke the 4-minute mile in 1954 the floodgates in running opened. The unbreakable barrier was broken again and again and now the world record is 3 minutes and 43 seconds. Will we now see scoring records in golf go lower and lower? My friends Lynn Marriott and Pia Nilsson teach VISION54. That’s the peak- performance approach to the game that makes the goal not a par on every hole, but a birdie – a 54 on a par-72 course. It’s all about imagining the impossible and making it your reality. Furyk and Chun have redefined what’s possible. One of the many things I love about sports is that it speeds up the time frame of human existence and tears down the walls restricting imagination. -

The group features numerous standouts from powers such as defending College World Series champion Vanderbilt, runner‐up Virginia and 17 Division I conferences nationwide. Interestingly, there were no returning position players from the first team of the 18th annual 2014 NCAA postseason All‐ America selections, but returning No. 1 crew starting pitchers Blake Fox (12‐0 record, 1.46 ERA) of Rice and Casey Bloomquist (12‐2, 1.56 ERA) of Cal Poly highlight a solid group of mound standouts returning for 2015 from the All‐ America ranks. They are joined by post‐2014 second‐team stalwarts outfielder DJ Stewart (.351, 7 homers, 50 RBIs) of Florida State and starting pitchers Kyle Funkhouser (13‐3, 1.94 ERA) of Louisville, Atlantic Coast Conference 2014 Pitcher of the Year Nathan Kirby (9‐3, 2.06) of Virginia and 2014 Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year Preston Morrison (9‐4, 1.32 ERA) of TCU on the first unit of the 2015 NCBWA elite squadron.
