Why Adjustments Are Needed King Arthur’s quest for it in the Middle Ages became a large part of his legend. Monty Python and Indiana Jones launched their searches in popular 1974 and 1989 movies. The mythic quest for the Holy Grail, the name given in Western tradition to the chal- ice used by Jesus Christ at his Passover meal the night before his death, is now often a metaphor for a quintessential search. In the illustrious history of baseball, the “holy grail” is a ranking of each player’s overall value on the baseball diamond. Because player skills are multifaceted, it is not clear that such a ranking is possible. In comparing two players, you see that one hits home runs much better, whereas the other gets on base more often, is faster on the base paths, and is a better fielder. So which player should rank higher? In Baseball’s All-Time Best Hitters, I identified which players were best at getting a hit in a given at-bat, calling them the best hitters. Many reviewers either disapproved of or failed to note my definition of “best hitter.” Although frequently used in base- ball writings, the terms “good hitter” or best hitter are rarely defined. In a July 1997 Sports Illustrated article, Tom Verducci called Tony Gwynn “the best hitter since Ted Williams” while considering only batting average.

  • Long Gone Reminder
ARTI FACT LONG GONE REMINDER IN THE REVERED TRADITION OF NEIGHBORHOOD BALLPARKS, PITTSBURGH’S FORBES FIELD WAS ONE OF THE GREATS. Built in 1909, it was among the first made of concrete and steel, signaling the end of the old wooden stadiums. In a city known for its work ethic, Forbes Field bespoke a serious approach to leisure. The exterior was elaborate, the outfield vast. A review of the time stated, “For architectural beauty, imposing size, solid construction, and public comfort and convenience, it has not its superior in the world.” THE STADIUM WAS HOME TO THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES FROM 1909 TO 1970. In the sum- mer of 1921, it was the site of the first radio broadcast of a major league game. It was here that Babe Ruth hit his final home run. In later decades, a new generation of fans thrilled to the heroics of Roberto Clemente and his mates; Forbes was the scene of one of the game’s immortal moments, when the Pirates’ Bill Mazeroski hit a home run to win the thrilling 1960 World Series in game seven against the hated Yankees. The University of Pittsburgh’s towering Cathedral of Learning served as an observation deck for fans on the outside (pictured). AT THE DAWN OF THE 1970S, SEISMIC CHANGES IN THE STEEL INDUSTRY WERE UNDERWAY, and Pittsburgh faced an uncertain future. Almost as a ritual goodbye to the past, Forbes Field was demolished, replaced with a high tech arena with Astroturf at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers. Three Rivers Stadium was part of the multi-purpose megastadium wave of the 1970s.

ARTICLES It’s Not About the Money: THE ROLE OF PREFERENCES, COGNITIVE BIASES, AND HEURISTICS AMONG PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES Michael A. McCann† I. INTRODUCTION Professional athletes are often regarded as selfish, greedy, and out-of-touch with regular people. They hire agents who are vilified for negotiating employment contracts that occasionally yield compensation in excess of national gross domestic products.1 Professional athletes are thus commonly assumed to most value economic remuneration, rather than the “love of the game” or some other intangible, romanticized inclination. Lending credibility to this intuition is the rational actor model; a law and economic precept which presupposes that when individuals are presented with a set of choices, they rationally weigh costs and benefits, and select the course of † Assistant Professor of Law, Mississippi College School of Law; LL.M., Harvard Law School; J.D., University of Virginia School of Law; B.A., Georgetown University. And on the other side was -- Cooperstown. That's right, we thought we had died and gone to heaven. On our recent visit to this sleepy little hamlet in upstate New York, B.T., U-belly and I found a little slice of heaven at the Baseball Hall of Fame. It was everything we expected, and more. I have touched the plaque of the one they called the Iron Horse, and I have been made whole. The hallowed halls of Cooperstown provided spine-tingling memories of baseball's days of yore. The halls fairly echoed with voices and sounds from yesteryear: "Say it ain't so, Joe." "Can't anybody here play this game?" "Play ball!" "I love Brian Piccolo." (Oops, wrong museum.) "I am the greatest of all time." (U-belly's favorite.) "I should make more money than the president, I had a better year." "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?" And of course: "I feel like the luckiest man alive." Hang on while I regain my composure. Sniff. Snort. Thanks. I'm much better From the Bullpen Edition No. 11 September 22, 1992 Page 2 now. • Indians Party Like It's 1997 After Winning Pennant
Indians party like it's 1997 after winning pennant Cleveland will host Game 1 of the World Series for first time in its history By Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | @MLBastian | 12:38 AM ET TORONTO -- They took turns passing the trophy around. A bottle in one hand and the hardware in the other, one by one, Cleveland's players savored their moment. They would stare at it, champagne dripping from the gold eagle that sits atop the black base, pausing for a moment before posing for photos. In that brief personal moment, the players probably thought about all that had to happen for the Indians to reach this stage, for that trophy to be placed in their arms. Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Blue Jays in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series, a victory that clinched the franchise's sixth AL pennant, gave the world a look at what has defined this Indians team all season long, and why it is now going to the World Series. "I'm just really happy that we're standing here today," said Indians president Chris Antonetti, as his players partied on the other side of Rogers Centre's visitors' clubhouse. "However we got here, I'm not sure I've reflected back on. But this team, the resiliency, the grit, the perseverance to overcome all that they've gone through over the course of the season ..." More champagne bottles popped behind him. "The guys we have are not focused on who's not here," he continued, "but focused on the guys that are here and [they] try to find a way to help them win.

LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 46, No. 2, Apr. 24, 2007) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Michael “Mex” Carey Membership: It’s hard to believe that the baseball season is nearing conference tournament time. The season has been a great one so far and things are sure to get more exciting as we get closer to conference tournaments, the NCAA Regionals and the College World Series. A young Georgetown team in the Nation’s Capitol has struggled with some injuries, but the battle for supremacy in the BIG EAST, like many other conferences across the country, are still up for debate. At the same time, our heartfelt condolences go out to everyone at Virginia Tech after the senseless tragedy that unfolded on the Blacksburg campus recently.
