Devotion to the of Jesus

Almost every Church, built before 1970, seemed to have a statue of the Sa- cred Heart of Jesus. It was also very common to see images, statues, pictures or icons, of the Sacred Heart in Catholic homes. Devotion to the Sacred Heart was very popular and widespread until fairly recently. This devotion is very an- cient in the Church and even in the we read of the piercing of the Lord’s Heart by the centurion Longinus. Saints such as Saint Bernard of Clair- vaux, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Herman Joseph (d.1241) of , Saint Bonaventure (d. 1274), Saint Lutgarde (d.1246), Saint Mechtilde of Helfta (d.1298), Saint Gertrude the Great (d. 1302), Lanspergius (d. 1539) of the of Cologne, the Benedictine Louis de Blois (d. 1566) Abbot of Liessies in Hainaut, John of Avila (d. 1569), and Francis de Sales (d. 1622) all promoted the devotion in one form or another throughout the Mid- dle-Ages.

The most significant impetus for the devotion to the Sacred Heart in modern times is due to the miraculous apparitions of the Lord to Saint (1647–1690). St. Margaret Mary was a sister of the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary, in the village of Paray-le-Monial, France. The first apparition took place on December 27, 1673, the feast of Saint John the Evan- gelist, and the final one 18 months later on June 16, 1675. She wrote, "He disclosed to me the marvels of his Love and the inexplicable secrets of his Sacred Heart."

Saint Margaret Mary said that Jesus, appearing radiant with love, said: "Behold the Heart that has so loved men. ...Instead of gratitude I receive from the greater part (of humankind) only in- gratitude." It was during these apparitions that the Lord Jesus revealed the character of the de- votion and promises he made to those who would honor His Sacred Heart.

He requested to be honored under the figure of his heart, also saying that he asked for a devotion of expiatory love. Jesus asked St. Margaret Mary to work to establish a feast of reparation on the Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi, and from individu- als, he requested, in particular, frequent reception of Communion, especially on the first Friday of the month, a “Holy Hour” during Eucharistic Adoration on Thursdays, confession of sins, and praying for the intentions of the Holy Father.

Promises of the Sacred Heart To those who would honor and consecrate them- selves and make reparations to His Sacred Heart Je- sus promised that:

I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life.

Fr. BenRs Column

I will give peace in their families.

I will console them in all their troubles.

I will be their refuge in life and especially in death.

I will abundantly bless all their undertakings.

Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.

Tepid souls shall become fervent.

Fervent souls shall rise speedily to great perfection.

I will bless those places wherein the image of My Sacred Heart shall be exposed and venerated.

I will give to priests the power to touch the most hardened hearts.

Persons who propagate this devotion shall have their names eternally written in my Heart.

In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all-powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments, and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour. He will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.

The necessary devotions attached to these promises are:

Receiving Holy Communion frequently.

First Fridays: going to Confession and receiving the Eucharist on the first Friday of each month for nine consecutive months and offering your prayers for the intention of the Holy Father. Confession can be made within eight days before or after the first Friday.

Holy Hour: Eucharistic Adoration for one hour on Thursdays. Holy Hour can be made alone or as part of a group with formal prayers. Here at Victory, the chapel is open from 7am-9pm every day and Adoration does not have to be with the use of the monstrance the presence of the Lord in the Tabernacle is sufficient.

Celebrating of the Feast of the Sacred Heart.

Next Friday we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. This might be a good time to begin, or renew, your devotion to the Sacred Heart and to consecrate your family and home to the Sacred Heart. If you have an image of the Sacred Heart, that you would like to have blessed, I will be happy to bless it for you.

Invitation to Attend Parish Convocation: Solve the Challenges

My Dear Friends,

I am inviting parishioners to attend a parish wide Convocation on Tuesday June 15th at 6.30pm in the convocation center. This convocation is part of our planning and vision for Victory’s future and will set priorities for the coming years. It is part of the Institute for School and Parish Develop- ment (ISPD) process which we have engaged in for the past year and a half. Those gathered at this meeting will have an opportunity to give their input and vote on the eight areas that were identified as priorities drawing from our initial Ultimate Question survey and the work of the Exec- utive Committee, Core Team (16 parishioners), and the Development Advisory Group (90 parish- ioners). This ISPD process will help us form our Vision for Victory over the next few years, it will rank our priorities and work out strategies for achieving our goals. Below is the list of priority challenges identified by the Ultimate Survey. Everyone at the Convocation will have an opportunity to vote on these same challenges and help definitively define our priorities for the coming years. So please consider joining us on June 15th at 6.30pm in the convocation center and help solve the challenges and move Victory forward.

1. How can we better create a Culture of Belonging and Kindness throughout Our Lady of Victo- ry Parish and School?

2. How can we better engage/include our younger parishioners (jr. high/high school) to contin- ue their faith and commitment to the parish?

3. How can we make our school an outstanding institute of Catholic faith and learning?

4. How can we better welcome new families and young families into the parish and school and increase participation?

5. How can we increase the number of parishioners in ministry activities through active Steward- ship of Service?

6. How do we deepen our faith and spiritual formation?

7. How can we prepare and plan for the overall growth/success of the parish (i.e., plant, equip- ment, grounds, school, expansion)?

8. How can we engage the children of the parish who are not involved in sports to make them feel more included?
