BenRs Column Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Almost every Church, built before 1970, seemed to have a statue of the Sa- cred Heart of Jesus. It was also very common to see images, statues, pictures or icons, of the Sacred Heart in Catholic homes. Devotion to the Sacred Heart was very popular and widespread until fairly recently. This devotion is very an- cient in the Church and even in the Gospels we read of the piercing of the Lord’s Heart by the centurion Longinus. Saints such as Saint Bernard of Clair- vaux, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Herman Joseph (d.1241) of Cologne, Saint Bonaventure (d. 1274), Saint Lutgarde (d.1246), Saint Mechtilde of Helfta (d.1298), Saint Gertrude the Great (d. 1302), Lanspergius (d. 1539) of the Carthusians of Cologne, the Benedictine Louis de Blois (d. 1566) Abbot of Liessies in Hainaut, John of Avila (d. 1569), and Francis de Sales (d. 1622) all promoted the devotion in one form or another throughout the Mid- dle-Ages. The most significant impetus for the devotion to the Sacred Heart in modern times is due to the miraculous apparitions of the Lord to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647–1690). St. Margaret Mary was a sister of the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary, in the village of Paray-le-Monial, France. The first apparition took place on December 27, 1673, the feast of Saint John the Evan- gelist, and the final one 18 months later on June 16, 1675. She wrote, "He disclosed to me the marvels of his Love and the inexplicable secrets of his Sacred Heart." Saint Margaret Mary said that Jesus, appearing radiant with love, said: "Behold the Heart that has so loved men. ...Instead of gratitude I receive from the greater part (of humankind) only in- gratitude." It was during these apparitions that the Lord Jesus revealed the character of the de- votion and promises he made to those who would honor His Sacred Heart. He requested to be honored under the figure of his heart, also saying that he asked for a devotion of expiatory love. Jesus asked St. Margaret Mary to work to establish a feast of reparation on the Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi, and from individu- als, he requested, in particular, frequent reception of Communion, especially on the first Friday of the month, a “Holy Hour” during Eucharistic Adoration on Thursdays, confession of sins, and praying for the intentions of the Holy Father. Promises of the Sacred Heart To those who would honor and consecrate them- selves and make reparations to His Sacred Heart Je- sus promised that: I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life. 4 | Our Lady of Victory Parish Fr. BenRs Column I will give peace in their families. I will console them in all their troubles. I will be their refuge in life and especially in death. I will abundantly bless all their undertakings. Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy. Tepid souls shall become fervent. Fervent souls shall rise speedily to great perfection. I will bless those places wherein the image of My Sacred Heart shall be exposed and venerated. I will give to priests the power to touch the most hardened hearts. Persons who propagate this devotion shall have their names eternally written in my Heart. In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all-powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments, and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.
