1 (American Psychologist, in press) APA Award for Distinguished Scientific Contribution: Robert Plomin Robert Plomin was born 1948 in Chicago, Illinois. Although he grew up in a poor family without books, he was an avid reader from an early age, bringing bags of books home from his local public library. No one in his family went to college, including his sister and a dozen cousins who lived nearby, but Robert got a Ph.D. in psychology. These differences, as well as differences in temperament between Robert and his relatives, sparked his lifelong interest in why people are so different, especially children growing up in the same family. Robert’s parents sent him and his sister to a local Catholic elementary school, even though they were not religious, because the teaching was thought to be better than at the public school. Two unforeseen advantages of the Catholic school system in Chicago were their penchant for testing and their scholarship program. Because Robert performed well on these tests, he was given scholarships to attend at no cost an excellent Catholic high school (DePaul Academy) and college (DePaul University). Robert worked almost full-time throughout high school and college. He had his first job while still in elementary school, delivering chickens on Saturdays from a live poultry shop where his pay was a chicken plus tips. At college he took courses that fit his work schedule, toying with English and film studies but eventually working towards a philosophy major. Increasingly, philosophy didn’t feel right. Robert found himself frustrated because the questions that defined his philosophy classes seemed unanswerable. -
The Heritability of Language: a Review and Metaanalysis of Twin, Adoption, and Linkage Studies
THE HERITABILITY OF LANGUAGE: A REVIEW AND METAANALYSIS OF TWIN, ADOPTION, AND LINKAGE STUDIES KARIN STROMSWOLD Rutgers University Some researchers argue that the ability to acquire and use language is largely the result of innate predispositions that are specific to language (the INNATENESS HYPOTHESIS). If the innateness hypothesis is correct, these predispositions must be encoded for in our DNA. This article reviews more than one hundred genetic studies of language. The results of these studies strongly suggest that genetic factors play a role in the variation in the rate of language acquisition and linguistic proficiency attained by children and adults. Genetic factors account for much of the variance in linguistic abilities among people with written or spoken language disorders and some of the variance in linguistic abilities among normal people. In addition to heritable factors that influence both nonverbal and verbal abilities, there appear to be genetic factors that specifically influence linguistic abilities. Furthermore, some studies suggest that different genetic factors are involved in different aspects of language (e.g. written language vs. spoken language; lexical vs. syntactic abilities).* This article reviews the results of genetic studies that investigate the extent to which heritable factors play a role in the acquisition and use of language. The key questions that will be addressed are 1. Do heritable factors affect people’s ability to acquire and use language? 2. Are heritable factors responsible for (some of) the variation in linguistic abilities observed among‘normal’ people, or do heritable factors only account for the variance observed for people diagnosed with language disorders? 3. -

Psychologist Jay Joseph outlines the fallacies of twin studies in the context of the ongoing decades-long failure to discover genes for human behavioral differences, including IQ, personality, and the major psychiatric disorders. This volume critically examines twin research, with a special emphasis on reared-apart twin studies, and incorporates new and updated perspectives, analyses, arguments, and evidence. Jay Joseph, PsyD., is a licensed psychologist practicing in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Use of the Classical Twin Method in the Social and Behavioral Sciences

Twin method proponents argue that the greater behavioral trait resemblance of the former supports an important role for genetic factors in causing the trait. Many critics, on the other hand, argue that non-genetic factors plausibly explain these results. The twin method has been used for decades in psychology, psychiatry, and medicine, and more recently in social science fields such as political science and economics. In 2012, a team of researchers in political science using behavioral genetic methods performed a study based on twin data in an attempt to test the critics’ position, and concluded in favor of the validity of the twin method and its underlying monozygotic –dizygotic “equal environment assumption.” The author argues that this conclusion is not supported, because the investigators (1) framed their study in a way that guaranteed validation of the twin method, (2) put forward untenable redefinitions of the equal environment assumption, (3) used inadequate methods to assess twin environmental similarity and political ideology, (4) reached several con - clusions that argue against the twin method’s validity, (5) overlooked previous evidence showing that monozygotic twin pairs experience strong levels of identify confusion and attachment, (6) mistakenly counted environmental effects on twins’ behavioral resemblance as genetic effects, and (7) conflated the potential yet differing roles of biological and genetic influences on twin resemblance. -

Spinath King’s College London More is known about the genetics of intelligence than about any other trait, behavioral or biological, which is selectively reviewed in this article. Two of the most interesting genetic findings are that heritability of intelligence increases throughout the life span and that the same genes affect diverse cognitive abilities. The most exciting direction for genetic research on intelligence is to harness the power of the Human Genome Project to identify some of the specific genes responsible for the heritability of intelligence. The next research direction will be functional genomics—for example, understanding the brain pathways between genes and intelligence. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) will integrate life sciences research on intelligence; bottom-up molecular biological research will meet top-down psychological research in the brain. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A convergence of contextual factors, technological platforms and research frameworks in the genomics of the human brain and cognition has generated a new postgenomic model for the study of race and IQ. Centered on the case study of Bruce T. Lahn’s 2005 claims about the genomic basis of racial differences in brain size and IQ, this article maps the disciplinary terrain of this research, analyzes its central claims and examines the rigor of critical debate within the genomics community about new race and IQ research. New postgenomic race and IQ research, while displaying some continuities with previous eras of racial science, also differs in important ways, both contextual and conceptual. In particular, this new research draws on methods and hypotheses that are widely accepted across many fields of the contemporary molecular genetic sciences. This has implications for the forms of critical engagement that science studies scholars might pursue.
