Den här uppsatsen redogör för kopplingen mellan satanism och musikgenren black metal, hur de satanistiska utspelen kunde ta sig uttryck, huruvida de var förankrade i teologi samt innebörden för profilering inom black metalscenen- och rörelsen. Teorier som tillämpats under denna studie grundar sig i religionens betydelse för black metal-rörelsen, profileringens betydelse för black metal- rörelsen samt black metal-rörelsens attraktionskraft gentemot ungdomar i Sverige. Metoden som används för att få svar på frågeställningarna för denna uppsats har varit dels en litteraturstudie och dels en intervjustudie där en person som var delaktig i den tidiga metalscenen i Strömstad intervjuas och delar med sig av personliga upplevelser och erfarenheter. Resultatet för denna studie visade sig vara att black metal-rörelsen i Strömstad inte var influerad av satanismen till den grad det var i Norge. Satanismen var en del av black metal-scenen och det kunde uttrycka sig på flera olika sätt, från att dricka folköl och skära sig i armarna till att provocera den kristna kyrkan till skillnad från de satanistiska utspel i Norge som exempelvis kunde bestå i kyrkobränningar, mord och självmord. Black metal-rörelsens satanistiska uttryck förankrades dock inte någon teologisk grund utan handlade snarare om att vara extrem, provocerande och så ond som möjligt. Profileringen som satanist eller satanistisk var därför väldigt viktigt för den tidiga black metal-rörelsen. Inledning Black metal är i första hand en musikgenre som under 1980-talets senare hälft växer och blomstrar på riktigt under det tidiga 1990-talet, men har sin början redan under det tidiga 1980-talet. Black metal-rörelsen har ofta beskrivits som en mystisk och extrem rörelse, då kulten kring musiken varit minst lika omtalad som själva musiken. I media talades det om ett inbördeskrig inom black metal-rörelsen vid den här tiden, med Norges mest välkända, omtalade och framstående black metal-profiler, Varg ”Greven” Vikernes och Øystein ”Euronymous” Aarseth. Greven tar den 10 augusti 1993 livet av Euronymous.1 Händelsen leder till ett stort pådrag för den norska black metal-scenen som vid den här tiden börjat sprida sig österut, mot Sverige och den lilla västkuststaden Strömstad. Det är inte bara i Norge black metal-rörelsen förknippas med satanism och alternativa uttryckssätt såsom kyrkobränder och uppspikande av djur på kyrkor2, detta tar sig även till Strömstad. I Strömstad finns det under det sena 1980- och tidiga 1990-talet några omtalade karaktärer som profileras som anslutna till den så kallade black metal-rörelsen. En av dem har jag fått tala med och intervjua till denna uppsats. Intervjuobjektet för denna studie kallas här för Micke, men heter egentligen något annat. Ryland Leadgitarre, ICS Vortex Bass, Gesang (u.a. Ex-Dimmu Borgir, Arcturus) und Baard Kolstad (Schlagzeug). Gemeinsam entstanden besonders mitreißend geratene Songs mit allen liebenswerten Borknagar-Markenzeichen.     Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists.
