Een nieuwe editie van Willem Kloos’ Verzen en de keuze van een basistekst1 Abstract – For a new edition of the volume of poetry Verzen by Willem Kloos (1859-1938) this article explores the method of choosing a base text for reading editions as that is done today. It seems that the choice is often made by consider- ing four parameters, namely authority, the influence by other persons, the au- thor’s method of working and the literary-historical circumstances. However text editors do not take into account the different representations (or ‘images’) of the author that come with each version. Only when the editor is also aware of that as- pect s/he can make a well-considered choice. 1. -

Naar Een Heilige Schoonheid Van De Vorm. Willem Kloos’ Poëzieleer En De Praktijk
NAAR EEN HEILIGE SCHOONHEID VAN DE VORM. WILLEM KLOOS’ POËZIELEER EN DE PRAKTIJK Charlotte CAILLIAU Abstract – In his external poetics up to 1895 Willem Kloos assumes that ‘form and content in poetry are one’. With this axiom Kloos suggests that true art only comes into being when the poet expresses his ideas, intentions and emotions by means of a unique form. However, this is not the only requirement a true artist has to comply with. With regard to the writing process Kloos points out that genuine poetry is born in the mind of the poet. The whole verse, in the right form, is located there and the poet has to write down the lines. On the basis of the study of the genesis of the long, epical fragment Okeanos these considerations about the writing process are first of all compared with Kloos’s actual practice. This comparison shows that Kloos’s practice is a bit more complicated; even he had to fiddle with his verses before he got them published. Furthermore Kloos’s external poetics, with the emphasis on the form, are reviewed in the light of his implied, internal poetics that can be deduced from the genesis of Okeanos. Also internally, the essential words prove to be form and content. However, this is less so in early versions of Okeanos than in later ones, since many of the alterations Kloos made are formal by nature. -

The Grote Houtpoort rises majestically in the foreground, dominating the scene with its weathervane reaching to the composition’s edge. The Kalistoren Tower, used for the storage of gunpowder, is in the middle with the Kleine Houtpoort visible in the distance. Built in 1570, the Grote Houtpoort was at the end of the Grote Houtstraat, one of the main roads from the Grote Markt that led outside the city walls. Beyond the gate lay the wooded area, called the Haarlemmerwoud. The temperature is mild, over the arched bridge of the Grote Houtpoort, residents contentedly stroll, conversed or stop to admire the view. Below boatmen propel their craft across glass-like waters with shimmering reflections and floating swans. The sense of well-being pervades this orderly view of the city’s great landmarks that dominate its skyline. -

Literature of the Low Countries
Literature of the Low Countries A Short History of Dutch Literature in the Netherlands and Belgium Reinder P. Meijer bron Reinder P. Meijer, Literature of the Low Countries. A short history of Dutch literature in the Netherlands and Belgium. Martinus Nijhoff, The Hague / Boston 1978 Zie voor verantwoording: http://www.dbnl.org/tekst/meij019lite01_01/colofon.htm © 2006 dbnl / erven Reinder P. Meijer ii For Edith Reinder P. Meijer, Literature of the Low Countries vii Preface In any definition of terms, Dutch literature must be taken to mean all literature written in Dutch, thus excluding literature in Frisian, even though Friesland is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in the same way as literature in Welsh would be excluded from a history of English literature. Similarly, literature in Afrikaans (South African Dutch) falls outside the scope of this book, as Afrikaans from the moment of its birth out of seventeenth-century Dutch grew up independently and must be regarded as a language in its own right. Dutch literature, then, is the literature written in Dutch as spoken in the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the so-called Flemish part of the Kingdom of Belgium, that is the area north of the linguistic frontier which runs east-west through Belgium passing slightly south of Brussels. For the modern period this definition is clear anough, but for former times it needs some explanation. What do we mean, for example, when we use the term ‘Dutch’ for the medieval period? In the Middle Ages there was no standard Dutch language, and when the term ‘Dutch’ is used in a medieval context it is a kind of collective word indicating a number of different but closely related Frankish dialects. -
Het Janushoofd Van Julia (1885)
Het janushoofd van Julia (1885) Kris Steyaert (Université de Liège) Abstract In 1884 Willem Kloos and Albert Verwey started work on Julia, a collection of forty poems written in the manner of the successful author Fiore della Neve (M.G.L. van Loghem). In their pamphlet The Incompetence of the Dutch Literary Critics (1886), in which Julia’s true authorship was revealed, Kloos and Verwey made plain that the poems had been conceived as deliberate nonsense, something the Dutch literary establishment had failed to recognize. Nevertheless, a close reading of the collection brings to light a number of textual similarities with Kloos’s and Verwey’s serious poetry written in the period 1883-1885. This article reveals Julia as a fascinating hybrid in which an older aesthetic coexists with a new poetical language associated with the Eighties Movement.
