Despite obvious intelligence, Wols failed to complete school, and in 1932, not long after the death of his father, with whom he had a contentious relationship, he moved to Paris in an attempt to break away from his bourgeois roots. • Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WOLS Vintage Photographs from the 1930s February 22 – April 21, 2001 Ubu Gallery is pleased to present Wols: Vintage Photographs from the 1930s. Vintage photographs by Wols are extremely rare and the exhibition at Ubu will contain approximately 30 images covering the four principal areas of Wols’s photographic output –still lifes, portraits, fashion and abstraction. Wols’s photographs are known largely through modern prints made from original negatives, which were exhibited at the Von der Heydt-Museum in Wuppertal and the Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hannover (both in 1978) and at the Kunsthaus Zürich in 1996. Both vintage and modern prints were exhibited at the Busch-Reisinger Museum (Harvard University) in 1999. A set of modern prints is also in the collection of The J. Paul Getty Museum. Wols (the pseudonym of Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schulze, b. Germany 1913, d. France 1951) occupies a mythic position in post-war European painting as an emblematic figure of the Informel movement, which like its American counterpart “Abstract Expressionism,” was a bridge between Surrealist-inspired automatism and gestural abstraction. When Wols arrived in Paris in 1932, he was already practicing photography. It is the influence of the two prevailing, yet seemingly antithetical, photographic currents of the times –Surrealism in France and Neue Sachlichkeit (“New Objectivity”) in Germany– that imbues his photographic oeuvre with its unique and distinctive vision. In Paris, Wols made the acquaintance of Fernand Léger and Amédée Ozenfant through the introduction of the Bauhaus master, László Moholy-Nagy. Wols had met Moholy-Nagy having gone to Berlin to attend the Bauhaus –recently closed– on the recommendation of the Dresden-based photographer, Hugo Erfurth.

In response to this skepticism, Max Ernst embraced automatism and developed a new technique, which he called frottage , in an attempt to satisfy Breton's call for automatic activity, and in 1926, a collection of thirty-four frottages was published under the title Histoire Naturelle. This thesis provides a comprehensive analysis of Histoire Naturelle by situating it in the theoretical context of Surrealist automatism and addresses the means by which Ernst incorporated found objects from the natural world into the semi-automatic production of his frottages.

In it we sec pictures that represent what historical painting of the twentieth century, filled with signs of terror and destruction, has to offer. Pictures Ernst produced shortly after Hitler's seizure of power, reminiscent of Goya's Capriehos and Desastres de /a guerra, are clear references to that event. But mixed in with them again and again we find more harmonious, lighter works in which melancholy and horror give way to an almost cosmic serenity. The two moods are intimately related in this pictorial world, so inti- mately in fact that at any moment night can turn to day, paralysis to exhilaration: Ernst gives us both nightmare and deliverance. Encountering Max Ernst's work, we soon realize that it is impossible to catego- rize his extremely diverse oeuvre in terms of style. Yet we find in everything he did a single overriding artistic concept: that of the collage. Ernst took inspiration from the bewildering glut of available images in reproduction. Illustrations of objects and processes that he discovered in publications from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries provided material he could recycle in the form of collages.

  • Unpublished up to Now Hans Ulrich Reck March 2013 Survival in Marseille
unpublished up to now Hans Ulrich Reck March 2013 Survival in Marseille: Varian Fry, Surrealism and a Note on Refugee Aid Max Ernst, Jacqueline Lamda, André Masson, André Breton, Varian Fry (f. l. t. r.) in the 'Bureau du centre américain du secours', Marseille, 1940-41 (Photo Ylla/ Camilla Koffler, Fondation Chambon, Cellection Fry) From a technical perspective, style labels are often helpful in art history yet, with regard to content, they tend to obscure the view of the essentials. Epistemologically, they are not usable anyway, since they amount to nothing more than a ‘chronic’ model that is not able to accommodate any insight into the conditions of art. But, as stated above, as a marker and index for technical identification they may be used without doing any harm. Inevitably however, there are some paradoxes: with the prevailing success of a label, there will be a growing, yet unnoticed, belief that there was a corresponding, verified corpus of work. Again, this would not be such a problem if only individual cases at the margins were excluded or went unnoticed initially. However, if a label is applied not only to decades, historical positions, artists groups and other countable and objectified elements but also to both methodical and thematic concerns of the artistic articulation itself, then we are, indeed, faced with a serious problem, because then the label affects the substance and becomes misleading. The label of ‘Surrealism’ has always been such a particularly lamentable case in point. Just think of all the different artists and issues that are considered part of this ‘movement’ or ‘style’, especially since, in German, there is an almost inevitable danger of misunderstanding by mixing up ‘Subrealism’ and ‘Suprarealism’.

  • L'art En Guerre
THE GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM BILBAO presents on March 16, 2013 L’art en guerre France, 1938–1947: FROM PICASSO TO DUBUFFET Sponsored by As a strategic trustee of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao since its inception, the BBVA Group is proud and pleased to continue this historic collaboration, via our foundation, with one of the leading institutions of contemporary artistic culture as well as of our times, renowned and acclaimed around the world and throughout Spain and with strong roots in Basque society. An ambitious exhibition is being presented this season, entitled L’Art en guerre. France, 1938-1947: From Picasso to Dubuffet and originally produced in Paris, which reveals how art was used to respond to the dramatic and complex situation in France between 1938 and 1947, with a particular focus on how artists in our neighbor to the north reacted to World War II. More generally, L’Art en guerre can be seen as an exploration of the relationship between art and war carried out through a wide selection of documents and works, whose authors include some of the most famous names of the 20th century. The pieces created over the course of those years reflect very different aspects of the daily reality of those who lived through that period: their dreams, nightmares, and hopes—in short, the cognitive, creative and emotional atmosphere that made life meaningful in different sectors of society. Yet that context of social chaos and spiritual darkness was also a productive and innovative time for art, which survived everywhere and flowed forth in all variety of circumstances, both as an underground trend and within the parameters of official taste.

  • 1 Gestural Abstraction
1 GEstural ABsTraction Peter Selz and Kristine Stiles The dominant art mode during and after World War II has been labeled as Abstract Expressionism, action painting, lyrical abstraction, tachisme, art informel, art autre, and a host of other terms. Characterized by an intensely personal and subjective response by artists to the medium and the working process, it was an art in which painters and sculptors were engaged in the search for their own identity. in a universe described by existentialists as absurd, the artist carried the romantic quest for the self, sincerity, and emotional authenticity into a world of uncertainty, placing great value on risk-taking, discovery, and adventure into the unknown. Painters and sculptors manifested an at- titude that the Cubist Juan Gris had described earlier: “you are lost the instant you know what the result will be.” in the aftermath of fascist domination in Europe and in the face of the increasing rigidity of authoritarian communism in stalinist Russia, artists everywhere felt the need to establish a sense of personal autonomy. Auschwitz and hiroshima were cataclysms of such monstrous proportions that they could elicit little direct commentary from visual artists. indeed, responding to the Romanian poet Paul Celan’s poem “Death Fugue” (1944–45), which recalled the nazi death camps, the German philosopher The- odor Adorno wrote, “After Auschwitz, to write a poem is barbaric.” Adorno’s comment suggested the impossibility of making art after the apparent collapse of liberal human- ism. The dilemma posed by the conformity encouraged by mechanized mass culture and the growth and plethora of media added to the artist’s sense of alienation and need for individual expression.
